U21s through after penalty drama

Everton U21s 3 - 3 Newcastle U21s (aet; 5-3 on pens)
Everton Under-21s secured a semi-final matchup with Tottenham after a stunning game against Newcastle at Goodison Park ended level after extra time and Bryan Oviedo scored the winner in a penalty shootout.

After the home side had the better of the first half, Long hit the post early in the second but it was Ameobi who struck first for Newcastle.

McAleny fired home a quick equaliser for the Blues with 21 minutes to go, though, and Naismith fired Everton into a 77th-minute lead.

Celebrations were cut short, though, when Inman leveled matters once more six minutes later and after Long was denied by the woodwork at the death of regulation time, the game went into extra time.

Newcastle took the lead for the second time when Richardson charged down an attempted clearance by Mucha and slotted home to make it 3-2 eight minutes into the first period.

That looked to be that but another equaliser, this time by John Lundstram with five minutes left, rescued the Blues and set up penalties to complete the drama on a wild night at Goodison.

With Bigirimana putting his spot-kick wide, the Blues just had to hold their nerve, which they did as Stones, Duffy, Barkley, Garbutt and Oviedo successfully converted all of their five penalties.

Good luck to the lads. Hope they get a good crowd.

Will be interesting to see if Barkley has recovered from his illness and plays

I haven't seen anything mentioned, Brian, so it will probably be down to the club's Twitter feed...

Nice work lads.

Good to see Mcaleny back and in the goals. If he can stay fit next season I definitely think him and barkley could be the two who are knocking on the first team door.

I knew it all along. KITN1 or whatever that is.

Typical Moyes. All attack. Defense ignored. HA!

Congrats you beautiful youngsters. Congrats!. Kept fighting. Just like Everton.

Into the semis and all the best.

Oviedo must be ecstatic after trading champions league football for under 21 play offs.

Can anybody think of another time when an Everton side has scored all five pens in a shoot out ?
Well done boys !

Well done, James Morgan. Even with our youngsters into the semi, a shot at Moyes. Well done.

Oveido traded playing in a Central-American league for Everton. Let's see how he plays in the semi and final. We'll see how he matches up to the EPL next season.

Thinking the same James...Poor guy. He'll be off as soon as he can I imagine.
James Flynn

Christopher - One of us is reading the other wrong. Where Oveido came from professionally? Players from his country hope they can get an MLS contract and leave the instant they can secure one.

Oveido made the massive jump all the way to the Prem. A massive jump. I don't see him gone this off-season. Curious why you do.

I think he'll come good for us. He just needed to sit and watch a season. I have no problem with that.

All five penalties were very well taken, Oviedo's in off the post, Garbutt's a Baines blaster, Stones a little dink cool as you like. Couldn't understand why a certain full Scottish international striker didn't take one. He did score a good second goal to be fair.

I was very impressed with Duffy and Browning — Duffy commanding but more comfortable right-sided; Browning's pace was superb, real afterburners, although his back pass was a bit short for their third. McAleny looked nice and sharp, Lundstram and Barkley combined well in the centre, if a touch over elaborate at times.

Overall a great game by the lads and a well-deserved win.

With respect to Oviedo...anyone else worried about his lack of strength? I know this league has become increasingly European, but, he seems to get pushed off the ball far too easy for me.

Er...Oviedo was signed from the Danish league wasn't he? Anyway, well done youngsters,
Christopher Kelly
33 Posted 08/05/2013 at 08:33:16
James, it's not that I don't rate him, I just see him as a player who.. guess what? Wants to play.

He needs about another 10 pounds of muscle (not easy to do) but he should've had about 10-12 more games under his belt at this point of the season.

It boggles the mind how players can't break through into the team. It took Phil Neville practically playing himself into the second division for Seamus to get a look. Pienaar has been practically a ghost for 1/2 the season.

And yes Geoff, Copenhagen apparently is the coldest place in Costa Rica.

James Flynn, can you please show me where I slagged off Moyes?
I'm delighted for our young lads but I'm just wondering what Oviedo is thinking after barely having a sniff all season and playing in our second string.
Geoff Edwards
36 Posted 08/05/2013 at 09:53:26
Chris, I forgot Copenhagen was the easternmost outpost of the Costa Rican empire.

I think it's a major failing of Moyes that he doesn't give fringe players more of a chance every now and then

That IS the Naismith we see in our matches who contributes fuck all? I suppose having no-one near apart from the goalie and a massive goal to shoot at helps!
Christopher Kelly

Too many faults for me to number Geoff but yes that is a big one.

Of course there are a bunch of positives as well. Moyes just doesn't seem like a "winner" to me. I'm happy for him to go as long as we're smart and can somehow get the board out with him.

Why are the highlights not on the official site? I do like to watch us come out on top in a penalty shoot out. I read Stones "dinked" his pen. Lemme see!
James Flynn

James - Settled then. I read you wrong.

Fully expect him to get more playing time next season. Funnily enough, I've seen Ovi more playing against the US Nats than I have playing for Everton.

A bit of light amongst the darkness... The goals and penalties from the U21s recent win against Newcastle are now up on the official site. Worth watching for a peach of a pen by John Stones!
