Kenwright hints at patience in search for Moyes's successor

, 9 May, 47comments  |  Jump to most recent

Bill Kenwright says that he doesn't foresee making an "instant decision" like the one he made in appointing David Moyes 11 years ago but promised that the club will be looking "very seriously" for a candidate "who can take the club forward."

Predictably emotional following a hectic 24 hours in which news broke that his manager was set for the role of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, Kenwright pledged that he and Everton FC would do their utmost to continue the traditions established under Moyes's 11-year tenure.

“It's important that from here on in Everton continues in the David Moyes tradition and in the Everton Football Club tradition with an equally significant manager because he has been a significant manager for 11 years.

“I know that Evertonians will only look upon David Moyes with gratitude and admiration and we'll be with him for the next two games, but not for two games next season!"

“We really will be out there finding the right man for Everton Football Club. This is an extraordinary football club and like all football clubs worshipped by its fans. They are the people more than anything who over the last 24 hours I've been thinking of."

The Chairman suggested that the Board would take their time as they evaluate potential successors. “Eleven years ago I made the decision (to appoint David Moyes) and it was an instant decision, but I don't think that can happen this time.

“We'll be very seriously out there looking to see what kind of candidates are out there who can take the club forward."

Kenwright enjoyed a close relationship with Moyes and he heaped praise on the man he brought to Merseyside from Preston North End in 2002 and who transformed the Blues from relegation strugglers to top-seven regulars in the Premier League.

“He is a great manager and Manchester United are very lucky," the theatre impresario continued.

“I haven't said goodbye to him yet, we've just been talking on the phone and we've got two games still to go.

“It will be tough for all Evertonians to say goodbye to him, he's a great manager.

“Let's be honest we couldn't stand in his way, he's out of contract and it was his decision. We've had a really good 11 years adventure with David Moyes and it's my job and the club's job to get a worthy successor and build on what David has quite definitely brought to the football club — and hopefully move on from there."

"Predictably emotional", so true. Stop crying, checking on the dogs etc and deliver a manager like Laudrup or Poyet and not a UK dinosaur ffs! This could be the making of you, Bill, opportunity knocks again.

Wouldn't we expect Round to follow Moyesy down the M63?? Pretty severe indictment of him if not, the coaching staff almost always follow the manager!

Good grief, you really couldn't make this up. Moyes now has at least 2 weeks to not only sound out Baines, Fellaini and Jags about going to United but actually convince them to go! He can find out exactly what they want and work on them. Why would you let this happen?

He should be told to pack his bags and be escorted off the premises like most employees would be if they were in a position to damage his current employer.

Kenwright you are a disgrace, your responsibility is to Everton FC and it's fans, not David fucking Moyes.

BK a month from now.

"You know (looks upwards thoughtfully) sometimes...you can search high and low. All over the country and overseas and (smiles to self) it turns out what you're looking for...what you (pretends to think of right word)..NEED, is actually right under your nose. Steve Round is a top...."

Et-cetera.

If you really do love this club, Kenwright, sell your shares to Lord Grantchester.

Let the financial air and light back into this club before the bailiffs slap the `closed down` signs across the Gwladys St entrance.

Knowing Kenshite it'll be some English no mark hasbeen a day before the next season starts, that knobhead couldn't arrange a piss up in a brewery, don't forget he wanted Megson last time around, he'll be scouring the bins for a cheap as fuck yes man cum human shield.

The Board should have been looking for months in anticipation that Moyes might not sign the contract offered & should now be working from the shortlist they've already drawn up. Moyes should now be history, not being offered a bloody encore!

Robbie #868 - spot on - in any other walk of life if you take a job with the competition you know part of the deal is you say your goodbyes on the way out.

It might be petty and small minded but I'll be looking at him in the dug out for the next two games thinking 'what the fucks he doing here?!'.

The team talks will be like being told what a great place Butlins is to go for two weeks by a bloke who's got a brochure of the Bahamas poking out of his back pocket. Will go in one ear and out of the other.

He might even rest Baines...and Jags.....and Fellaini.....who knows....he might even set us up as 4 4 2, or 4 3 3 just to see what could've been......

Never thought I'd say it but for the next two games, and ONLY the next two games, Big Dunc takes responsibility for all first team affairs.

I've just realised, according to the poll, Steve Round is the preferred choice of (approximately) 24 people on TW!

I heard a bloke on TalkSport earlier saying we should appoint Round, and I thought: "What a damn fool. He must be the only man in the world who thinks that." Er, apparently not. Strange days...

I don't really care if Kenwright wants to do the job himself for a couple of matches, Moyes should now be a former employee. No doubt people will give him a big cheer as though there's some reflected glory in him landing the job he covets. However, as with his Manager of the Year awards - it's all about Moyes.

Kenwright puts two cans of dog food down in the kitchen...

'OK girls....help Poppa....who do I go for...? My Chum....or my Pal....? Tell me girls....that's it....come on girls....tell Daddy...'

Next installment - walking the dogs with 'Round Ball' and 'Pip Stick' - which one will the girls bring back...?!?

If Kenwright is as big a fool as I think he is, he has not thought about succession planning in the event of Moyes leaving. Christ all bloody mighty.!! Either he beieves we are simpletons (which is where I'd put my ten bob) or he is being creative with the truth, which I'd put all I posses on! Kenwright has said many times how much himself and Moysie are good mates. Really! Is he expecting us to believe he had no inkling that Moyes (who refused to sign a new contract until he'd seen how we did in the league andf the cup) might just decide "Fuck this for a game of soldiers, I'm wasdting my time here and I'm off. Truely, if Kenwright hasn't a short list of managers that will potentially fit the requirements of the club then we are without doubt be runn by either a charlatan or a nincompoop...or maybe he fits both descriptions. Either way, I despair we'll ever get anywhere with this man in charge

I think we've moved on from the 90s where we couldn't find anyone who wanted to manage us, do you remember how bad those days were ?

I do think however we aren't going to get a big name, in all honesty why would anyone want to come ? No funds, I fear an exodus in the summer with Fellaini, Baines maybe one of two more on their way so the new manager will need to build again..... with what ?

Going to be one interesting summer !

If Peter Johnson the red under the bed had done half of what this clown Kenwright had done he would have ended up in the Mersey. What are the other directors doing, where is their opinion on these matters. How come we never ever hear from them? We are being run like some non-league club by a man who I wouldn't put in charge of a tuck-shop never mind a PL club.

Do you think all the journalists wait until he disappears from view and then roll about laughing. You can imagine all the Man U directors and management team watching him on a big screen in a fancy lounge falling about and asking for it to be replayed time and time again.

When he tries to tell people at VIP functions in far off places that he owns a PL club, I bet they all whisper about him and don't believe that could be possible, the only difference between him and the Venky's is that they have the excuse of not understanding the culture of English Football.

Bill Kenwright must live in some fantasy world and have imaginary Evertonian Friends who advice and praise him constantly. If ever there was a character who could have a comedy written about them it is this man, unfortunately it is a tragedy for the fans of Evreton FC.

Kev, I think those 24 fans that voted for "within the club" should be brought before a jury, sussed out as to whether or not they were taking the piss, and made to do a nude lap of Goodison before/after the West Ham game.

Seriously though, if BK elects someone from within the club, I'm going to start supporting Ipswich.

This is going to be a long and painful summer while we wait and are linked with a hundred different managers who eventually come out n say they ain't interested. Get ready for "Martinez knocks back Everton's advances" etc. We will be more of a laughing stock than we already are.

Sure isn't easy being an Everton fan when you have a goon like Kenwright in charge.

So Billy Liar is going to take his time in appointing a successor to the Lying backstabber. Quite right too its an important job, manager, not something to rush in to. After all how could ANYBODY expect your manager to leave and new one to be in place a mere 48 hours later. I mean its just not BELIEVABLE that this could be accomplished especially by a huge Stock Market quoted club. There would have to be in depth discussions over many months, lots of meetings and contract discussions before such a HUGE decision could be made wouldn't there Mr DECEITFUL LYING Moyes.

Now don't get me wrong I am glad the Dour Defensive Dour One has gone but its the DECEITFUL, LYING, LAME CONTRACT EXCUSE MAKING BACKSTABBING,on behalf of BOTH Moyes and Manchester United ,nature of his going that gets up my nose.

Of course for the 'Meejah' and footballs RS pundits Manchester United is far too important a club to be without a manager for any extended period - Everton on the other hand – Ho! Hum! who cares.

With finance in short supply at Goodison,BK can save three months salary by leaving an appointment until the brink of season`s opening and then announcing that the best candidate for the job is Steve Rouse or Phil Neville.
That tactic will thus severely restrict the time the new man can spend money on transfers.
Oh for a dynamic board such as the one that steers the affairs of Manchester United!

Dithery Dave taking over from Sir Arrogant looks like it's been sorted a while ago, so why the surprise from Gordon Clegg? Good luck to Moyes, but I don't want him to be in charge of the West Ham & Chelsea games, he's gone, let's move on.

Our problem is who Cleggy gets now (lord help us)... This man might be okay at musicals (apparently his fav tune is the dirge). Our targets should have been identified after Moyes threats so why the patience plea?

By the way, I see Bradley Hardaker (Dave Whelan) has rubbished Everton... What a surprise.

If BK was serious about keeping Moyes at Everton, he would have gave Moyes the funds to sign players during last January's transfer window. If he had of done, Everton could have secured champions league football for next season. And Moyes may have been reluctant to leave. What Everton have instead are 'crocodile tears' from BK over Moyes leaving.

Steavey, I think Gollum to Man Utd was done months ago, a £2bn business doesn't take an overnight punt on a new manager. It wouldn't have mattered if Kenshite was to spring the wedge or not, the behind closed doors negotiations were probably done and dusted and probably hinged on Whiskey Nose winning one more title before making the announcement. Gollum's general demeanour most of the season has been that of someone clearly not arsed anymore.

The Everton Chairman Mr Bill Kenwright has said that he will consult/listen to the Everton fans with regards to the new Everton manager appointment, because we are knowledgeable fans who know who we want and who we don’t want. Let us help our Chairman on this difficult decision and help him get a sense of who are possibilities and who are categorically not possibilities.

Who is worthy??????

In my opinion…..I like to hear these names mentioned……

1. Michael Laudrup (but not kicking and screaming nor with big money attached)
2. Ole Gunnar Solkjaer
3. Victor Pereira
4. Vincenzo Montella
5. Malky MacKay
6. Paul Lambert

Under no circumstances should these people be mentioned…..

1. Neil Lennon
2. Phil Neville (I would welcome him as assistant)
3. Big Dunc (as much as I love him)
4. Slaven Bilic
5. Mark Hughes (hell no)
6. Martinez (my opinion……I just get a Walter Smith feel about him)
7. Martin O’Neill
8. Benitez (joke)

Gavin Ramejkis: DAVID MOYES NEWS CONFERENCE

David Moyes insists he was not planning on leaving Goodison Park.

Moyes said: "I wasn't planning on leaving. If you'd pushed me I would say I was swaying toward staying with Everton.

"I've got everything ready for next season and the chairman and everyone knows the route we need to take next season. This is a club competing to be in Europe."

Matt Traynor
48 Posted 10/05/2013 at 14:59:16
Steavey #465, if he'd admitted it was a done deal months ago, Everton would have a case for tapping up. So, what would you expect him to say? Everton's media people briefed the journalists that he would not talk about Man Utd in today's press conference. I guess they got round that by asking about how he decided he was leaving.

He's gonna have to learn to start banning press though if he's to truly follow in SAF's footsteps.

Brian Waring

Steavey, if he wasn't planning on leaving, then why was he running his contract down, surely he could have signed a new contract weeks ago and got it out of the way so it didn't interfere with the pre-season he was supposedly planning?

I cant believe people don't think this hasnt been signed and sealed for some time.

Man Utd and Ferguson will have been planning his departure in some shape or form for months / years. Things will have changed, and his departure may have only kicked in recently for it to happen now (like after securing the title), but there is no way on earth a club with their clout, trading on the NYSE wouldn't have had this mapped out - and a certain point the successor (in this case Moyes) would have been sounded out and made an agreement behind closed doors well before this week? Do you really think Alex Ferguson got up midweek and thought "thats me" and Moyes has agreed to replace him off the back of the phone call? No contractual discussion? Wages? Transfer budget?

Man Utd after all have said one of the reasons he was appointed was because he buys into their commercial vision moving forward - how does he know about their "commercial vision" moving forward if he's not gone through it all with them already? Did he read it in the paper?!

Mind you our contrasting commercial visions aren't difficult to work out are they:

Man Utd - Big Time. Everton - Small Time.

This week Man Utd and Moyes have basically done a job on us, and in doing so Moyes has forfeited the right to manage us the moment he's formally agreed to move along.

Its dead easy - Good.Bye. Simple as that.
