Six up for the Under-20 World Cup

Six young Everton players have been named in the provisional 35-man England squad heading to Turkey for the Under-20 World Cup this summer.

Jake Bidwell, Luke Garbutt, John Stones, Chris Long, John Lundstram, and Ross Barkley have all been included but the squad will be reduced to 21 players by 7 June 2013.

Congrats to each and every one of them.

20 per cent of an England squad from Everton, is it 1986?

Inevitable comment(s) I know but this shows on the one hand that the Academy is producing quality and, on the other hand, that we not be making the best use of this quality (I do see that a couple of these lads came from elsewhere).

Perhaps this is one of the good reasons to want to slip into Everton's hot seat? And I really do hope that the new gaffer puts a little more faith in youth than his (or her, let's not rule out anything) predecessor - and don't mention the ass-over-tit one-off Leeds match please.

I actually think 2 or 3 of them will get in the final squad.
Expect Barkley, Lundstram and Garbutt to make the cut

Wouldn't rule out Stones either Ellam.

It's still nice to know that one-in-five of the apparently top-35 English under-20s are with us... for the time being at any rate.

This is really impressive. Someone is clearly doing something right and it hopefully means we have base to build on with some decent players coming through in a group.

I thought McAleny might have been one of them, seems to be scoring for fun in the Under-21 league.

I was gonna say, "With a name like Conor McAleny..." but I see he was born in Whiston.

However, it turns out he is over 20 (born 12 August 1992)... so, depending on the cut-off date, that may be the reason he misses out.

Yes, Paul, I've seen Stones a few times in the U-21s and he doesn't looked fazed at all. He's my "one for the future"

Hopefully the new manager will show a change of policy and give them a chance over the next year or so.

The previous one was dead against it.

Keep in mind that the likes of James Wallace went away with the England u 20s at the last tournament.

That said hopefully a brighter future at Everton awaits these lads though Barkley is the only one I expect to see in the Everton first team next season.

Expect Tyias Browning to join as well if any defenders pull out.

Out of all the comments made over the past couple of weeks the one that really annoyed me was the "he gives youth a chance"', like we have had this production line of academy players being blooded into the side over the past 10 years. Lundstram looks like quality and captains the England side if my memory serves me right.

God, what a depressing thread. McAleny b. 12/08/92.

At the age of 38, I think my chances of playing centre forward for Everton are diminishing.

N.B. I'm available as a manager now.

John, if you're good enough you're young enough.

Keep the faith John! Younger than Giggs.

From what I've seen of Lundstram in the various England levels he is a real talent; comfortable in possession, always on the move and looking for the ball, passes well off both feet - and at all ranges, and more than happy to shoot from range if the opportunity arises. He and Ross Barkley have played together quite a few times for England, and they seem to have a good understanding. I also expect Lundstram to be the team captain, Peter.

Good bunch of young players. I am not sure what the latest is with Hallam Hope, but historically he has been in with this group of players. Not sure why he misses out this time.

@Brent924......

What do you think of Stones if you've seen him play?
I know we bought him as a right back, but I heard he's big enough to play at centre back too?
Quick?

John, by 35 I had finally accepted that I wasn't going to be discovered and make it, and play for england.

What really hurt was. At 38 when, just before a world cup, getting out of my car at work (a school) and walking past a kid fiddling with a magazine, I realised I was never going to be a panini sticker!

"I'll swap you 3 Ronaldo for a Williamson"

Never going to hear that. (sigh)

Here's what DM has had to say on the possibility of his present back room staff taking a step up: "Are they going to be successful Premier League managers? I don't know. The only way you find out is to give them an opportunity. In the same breath I do think that learning your trade is important as well."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/may/17/david-Moyes-everton-manchester-united

Well, that applies to young players as well, doesn't it. Plainly, DM did NOT give youngsters an opportunity. I can live with that, ultimately - I sometimes disagreed with his team selection but there is certainly a case for sticking with the tried and trusted. But what I absolutely can't be doing with is the idea that - without any of us noticing - he deserves credit for bravely giving promising young players a chance to shine. He bloody hasn't!

Any one got any insight into young Chris Long? He's the one I know least about.

Paul Ferry — And the funniest thing about Leeds is that they defeated a full strength Tottenham with Bale in the side like the week after in the League Cup.

We have so many young players that could really help with the rotation of the first team regulars under the new manager. Real shame Moyes couldn't see that. There is a very good possibility the next manager makes him look foolish indeed.

If we get the right guy in Peter. And looking at the better odds, I would have no confidence whatsoever that we will.

Quite right Steve. I'm an optimist, which is an endangered species on ToffeeWeb. Who the bookies got now?

Martinez. The best site to keep tabs on is this one:

Thanks Steve. I'm ok with Martinez as an option although there are so many inspiring choices available this summer. Of course they are the ones with long or no odds lol.

Sat and watched highlights of the last few months worth of U21 matches.

Obviously don't give the full picture but McAleny, Duffy, and Barkley look a class apart at that level. Duffy in particular just looks like a man against boys.

Stones has made some really bad mistakes. I mean really bad.

Long looks like a solid forward. Hard to say too much more.

Just checking on the England website, and it seems that Peter Taylor has finalised his 21-man squad for the Under-20's World Cup this summer.

If you recall, we had six players in the provisional 35-man squad, but this has been whittled down to four players in the final 21.

The four are Barkley, Lundstram, John Stones, and Chris Long. Congratulations to all four, and hard luck on Bidwell and Garbutt.

A very good representation though, the most players from any one club.

The future is blue......

I'm not sure about Stones – I've seen him a few times now.
