Mirallas aiming high

Kevin Mirallas says that Roberto Martinez and his Everton team believe they have the team to stay in the top four and claim a Champions League-qualifying spot this season.

The Blues have made an increasingly impressive start to the 2013-14 season and moved into fourth place on Monday evening with the 3-2 victory over Newcastle United, thanks to a team that Mirallas says is better than the one that looked on course for a top -four finish last season before fizzling out after Christmas.

"The coach and the team certainly believe we can [get into the Champions League," Mirallas told BBC Sport. "We're playing well and it's not by investing in £30m or £40m players. The team is better this season than last." "We've had a really good start and we've also got a very good team," Belgian forward continued. "Probably most people would not have believed we would be where we are now, but we want to maintain that.

"It's important that we continue this run. We don't know how long it's going to last for, but it's important we win as many games as we can and I think we could find ourselves in a good position."

Everton's top-four credentials will come under stern examination this weekend with the trip to Manchester City where victory would see them go joint top, for a few hours at least, due to their lunchtime kickoff.
