Irishman suffers cruciate knee ligament injury
Darron Gibson is to undergo surgery after scans confirmed that he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury during the Republic of Ireland's game against Kazakhstan last night.

The midfielder was stretchered off 38 minutes into the Republic's 3-1 win after his knee buckled as he went in for a routine tackle. He left the stadium on crutches and traveled back to Finch Farm where the severity of the injury was assessed by Everton's medical staff.

Gibson has only just recovered from a knee problem that kept him out of action for the first five of the Blues' league games and this will be a major setback to a career that has been dogged by serious injury.

He will be out of action for between six to nine months but will, in all likelihood, miss the remainder of the season.
