Everton legend Howard Kendall visited the club's Finch Farm training complex today, catching up with familiar faces from his managerial days and meeting current boss Roberto Martinez.

Kendall, now 67, made his name at Goodison as a player as a member of the famous Holy Trinity of midfielders in the late 1960s that was completed by Colin Harvey and Alan Ball, before spending three spells as the club's manager between 1981 and 1998.

He presided, of course, over what was the Blues' most successful period in the mid-1980s, landing two League titles, the European Cup Winners' Cup and reaching three successive FA Cup Finals, winning the trophy in 1984.

Despite his standing at Everton, this was Kendall's first visit to Finch Farm and Martinez followed though on a pledge made in the summer to meet the Goodison Great and show him around as his team prepares for the visit of Hull on Saturday.

“Howard is a legend" the Spaniard said. "It was fantastic to have him at the training ground. It's really important that we embrace the true legends of Everton football club and acknowledge their legacy.

"One of the first things I said I wanted to do in the summer was to get Howard here and meet him properly.

“I've told him he's welcome here any time he wants to come. He doesn't have to ask.”

Kendall was suitably impressed with the club's nationally recognised facility, saying: “It's a wonderful training ground, it truly is. Bellefield had many charms and was a special place but in terms of facilities, Finch Farm is far better.

“It was nice to be invited down by Roberto Martinez, and special to be so warmly welcomed by all the staff.

“I think the club has a bright future under Roberto and they couldn't ask for a better place to prepare for matches.

"Seeing the boot room and some familiar faces like Duncan Ferguson, Kevin Sheedy and David Unsworth to name a few all working for the club, made the memories come flooding back.”

Kendall is also promoting his autobiography, Love Affairs & Marriage: My Life in Football which is published by deCoubertin and was officially launched at the Epstein Theatre tonight.
