Martinez backs Kone to come good

Manager believes goals will come for Ivorian
Roberto Martinez says he retains his faith in striker Arouna Kone as the Ivorian striker searches for his first Everton goal.

The 29-year-old missed a gilt-edged chance against Hull City at the weekend when he smacked an effort off the post with goal gaping and he spurned a couple of great opportunities in his first competitive start for the Blues in the League Cup tie against Stevenage in August.

His manager, though, is unconcerned and is mindful of the disruption to his season caused by injury as he tries to settle into his new surroundings.

“We have to remember that Arouna has had a few niggles that have stopped him from being himself," Martinez told evertontv. "I thought that in the 20 minutes [against Hull] he created two outstanding opportunities and he was a very important link piece in our attacking play.

“At the end of the day you always feel disappointed when you don't take your chances but I never value or measure a striker by taking those chances or not — I value a striker by creating those chances.

The Spaniard is backing the former Wigan man to come good, though, and repay some of his £6m transfer fee by starting to score again.

“I thought he looked sharp, looked lively and technically good in everything he did," Martinez continued. "If he carries on creating those chances, everyone will see the type of player that Arouna can be.

“Strikers need goals — don't get me wrong — and that is something that everyone will agree with. But I measure how you are going to get the goals and to get the goals you need to be in a good moment of form.”
