A bit of progress on a new stadium

Sir Terry Leahy, special advisor to the club, claims that Everton have made a "bit of progress" and are "putting together the financial jigsaw" to move to a new stadium.

He said: "The club have been working quietly behind the scenes and are making a bit of progress on sites in the city, and they are putting together the financial jigsaw needed to complete the move.

“They [investors] worry about Everton being what from the outside world would appear as the number two club in the city, and then they look at the ground and see that will need new investments.

“So all those things together – the fact that it's hard anyway and the fact that there are some special challenges with Everton – make it more difficult. On the plus side, it's a fantastically successful club."

"We've had strenuous meetings with a very supportive [Mayor] Joe Anderson and the council. Last time we spoke, I think there were six or seven sites – now there are two or three, and there's one that I would love. But again, it's down to the funding package.”
