Davies protected from burn-out by England

The FA have agreed to Everton's request to exclude Tom Davies from the U19 European Championship finals this summer.

The 18-year-old has been ever-present for the Blues since breaking into the first team at the turn of the year and with his involvement expected to continue through to the end of the season, the club are keen to protect him from further commitments.

“Steve Walsh spoke to the people at the FA about this and the plan is he will get the summer off," manager Ronald Koeman said.

“I don't know exactly what the programme is for the rest of the youth national teams but Tom will not be involved in that tournament.”

Davies captained his country's U19s side during the last international break as they secured qualification for the tournament and he is expected to be promoted to a higher age group next season given his impressive and rapid progress at club level for Everton.

Sensible decision by all concerned. What a future our Tom has in front of him.

Ron said no and that's it, quite right too.

Find this a bit odd. Shouldn't England want the best players to play in an official tournament like this?

I am glad that he will get the rest, but...

Quite right, the ridiculous international set up has cost us dear. This lad is an unbelievable talent and needs nurturing. I'm glad Koeman has the balls to say hands off.

I don't think this has anything to do with having balls or any other such nonsense. This is a sign that people at Everton and the FA are at last putting the welfare of young players first.

Tom needs a complete break for the summer and sensible heads have realised this, which is quite refreshing.

It's actually been reported that the England youth setup made the decision in at least one newspaper that I saw. It's amazing how they print things without fact-checking.
