Everton in the frame for Palace's Mateta
Everton are among the clubs to have registered an interest in Jean-Philippe Mateta who has reportedly told Crystal Palace he'd like to play somewhere other than Selhurst Park next season.
According to BILD in Germany, Palace are content to let him go this summer, preferably on loan, and that has alerted the Blues and Turkish giants Galatasaray.
The report suggests, however, that Mateta would prefer a move to Germany.
The 25-year-old Frenchman joined the Eagles from Mainz, initially in another loan move and then permanently last year in a €15m deal.

He scored two Premier League goals in his first season and has registered a further six in 44 games, including one at Goodison Park a year ago during the Toffees' dramatic come-from-behind win that secured Premier League safety at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

By the way is Maupay still an Everton player.
Lingard is available and he would be a better option than Maupay.
Don't know about Mateta but if he is a better option to what we have then get him.
Personally I would go for Smith-Rowe who hasn't figured in Arteta's team selections recently.
I suppose however it all comes down to money and how much will be available if any so the quicker they offload the underachiever's the better.
14 Posted 02/06/2023 at 21:35:30
He was decent in Germany and in his first season for Palace. He has the sort of profile that Dyche might like. I doubt he'd be the first choice striker but if he was on loan to provide a better option than Maupay then there may be some sense to it.
I strongly suspect it's rubbish though and we will have other, better targets.

It's our problem free, philosophy.
Hakuna Mateta.

Face it, speculating on owners is not as much fun as speculating on strikers.
And speculating on points deductions and sanctions is no fun at all.
So... sorry, Rob, but....
BRING ON THE RUMORS!!!

As for mentioning Lingard, christ almighty, apparently his attitude is terrible and he cant be arsed to do anything, doesn't care if he plays or not. Dont touch with a barge pole. We have to start learning our lessons about signing this sort of player.

My concern – and I hope I'm wrong – is that unless we sell at least one player for a significant sum (which being Everton will be the last day of the transfer window anyway) we'll be shopping in the free transfer market.
Sam (Hoare). Any decent free transfers or out-of-contract players on your radar?

22 Posted 02/06/2023 at 22:32:47
We can't afford the good and proven ones.
Logic dictates that we are going to sign some players that we aren't overly thrilled about.
They'll either be proven average or unproven. Personally I'd prefer unproven, in the positions we need, with some resale value after 3/4 years (ie, age 26 maximum). But that would need an actual transfer strategy.

There were five posts before your tirade. Not one says anything remotely close to slagging anyone off or indicates they fully believe this is 100% genuine.
If you don't like transfer rumours, I'd suggest you stay away from the section called ‘The Rumour Mill' for a few months; otherwise, your head might explode.
29 Posted 02/06/2023 at 23:16:46
We will be in trouble again if we replace Calvert-Lewin with this guy. And it will be a replacement as Calvert-Lewin will continue to be a sicknote.
Buying Tammy Abraham is a bit of a pipe dream but surely we can buy Beto, and at least have the Gordon money to spend on a couple of decent players.
30 Posted 02/06/2023 at 23:23:06
He's unsettled at Palace, he'd be unsettled here, he's rumoured to want to return to Germany and his agent is doing a bit of PR work to get a deal. He was just average at best at Palace most of the time with a few good games thrown in and I'm unconvinced that Dyche would make him that much better.
I feel better now for elaborating.

I look at the gossip page on the BBC website everyday, more for a laugh more than anything, cos I don't believe a word of any of them, but then I don't come on here saying stuff like “Great, What the fuck are we signing so and so forâ€, "another waste of money", etc etc etc, as if it's a foregone conclusion that we're definitely signing these rumours.
The only people whose heads explode are the ones who go ape-shit over a rumour.

35 Posted 02/06/2023 at 23:55:30
Any money we do spend, therefore, will probably need to come from player sales even though the 㿴m received for Gordon and Kean will count towards both the current financial year's accounts and the running three-year total of losses (which can't exceed 𧴡m as we know, although the allowances for Covid, etc still apply for 2020-21).
36 Posted 03/06/2023 at 00:13:38
Tammy Abraham isn't a cheap striker with a poor goal scoring record so not sure why you are hoping that rumour isn't true.
With our current standing, it would be a major coup if we could buy him.
37 Posted 03/06/2023 at 00:51:26
Gavin, landing him wouldn't be a coup. Given our financial and table status, it would be a miracle.
38 Posted 03/06/2023 at 00:53:53
And might that reasonably be something the new owners would work out before closing the deal?
39 Posted 03/06/2023 at 01:10:12
Anyone contending "hopefulness" whilst they're still in situ is, to me, bizarre.
If they get out this year, their legacy will still crucify us for years to come, regardless of the as yet far from paid for "White-Elephant" stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.
Unknowns now pitching in just over 𧴜M to buy-in to us are irrelevant. At least five teams have bought at least one player for nigh on that sum every season for years.
We bought instead Ramirez, Schneiderlin, Klaassen and many more of their ilk though, for 𧴜's of millions.
So, all-in-all, I'm in the "Rob" camp. Rumours are pointless and disappointment (always) is our only realistic expectation.
40 Posted 03/06/2023 at 01:32:47
I'd like us to buy Beto and the lad from Almeria, El Bilal Toure. The latter only scored 6 goals last season but he looks like he's the right age, has speed and power and could get a lot better. He can play on the right wing too. Looks great on YouTube, which is not a great barometer in itself, but I'm still hoping that story has some legs.
If we could buy those two players for around 㿙m (or call it the Gordon money) I'd be reasonably happy.
I think we could bring in some bargains, like the attacking No.10 Japanese player who is out of contract from Eintracht Frankfurt as an alternative to Doucouré. He'll have plenty of suitors but you never know.
There's the young midfielder, Tom Kraus, apparently available at around ٢-5 million euros who could be a replacement for Tom Davies,
We then have deadwood going out like Maupay, Gomes, and Gbamin. We might only get around 㾶M for all of them on a good day, but that could be used to bring a couple of full-backs in on loan.
41 Posted 03/06/2023 at 04:22:27
Hence the need to sell players like Gordon and not replace them, with the money going to pay off debt or to make the books look good in some other accounting dark arts way.
42 Posted 03/06/2023 at 06:14:12
Robert Tressell has just put out a good article with lots of free/cheap options we might go for.
My own transfer piece will be out next week or the week after. Though I think we may have a little more money to spend, in some areas, thanks to a low net spend over the last few seasons and (hopefully) new investment.
43 Posted 03/06/2023 at 06:14:54
We need 2 strikers this window. That will allow us to sell/get rid of Maupay and loan out Simms or Cannon again. 4 strikers going into the season and if they were:
Calvert-Lewin
Tammy Abraham
Jean-Philippe Mateta
Simms or Cannon
We'd be in a much better position and Dyche would have the type of striker he usually has.

It can provide an interesting diversion however assessing which of these rumours would best fulfil our present needs, and more to the point which are attainable, while there is no real football going on to occupy our minds.
It does raise the question however of the limited effectiveness of our scouting setup in identifying prospective talent and our decision making team in getting deals over the line before they are snapped up by our rivals
With regard to Mateta,I'm with Dean @ 16 although I don't think he's that good!!!

48 Posted 03/06/2023 at 14:46:26
Mateta is no great shakes but he's obviously a much better fit for us than Maupay when Calvert-Lewin is unavailable. With him in the side we might well have beaten Fulham at home, even Newcastle, and probably put 2 or 3 past Bournemouth on the final day.
So the likes of Mateta, Krauss and other loans or frees and really cheap signings might go ahead as a precaution. But we can safely ignore rumours of Tammy Abraham and other big signings arriving. They are obviously complete nonsense.
49 Posted 03/06/2023 at 16:56:24
Mateta? No thanks and he wouldn't come anyway.
LAst night I had a dream ( nightmare):
My very Frightening XI for 23-24 opening game v Burnley:
Pickford, Patterson, Keane, Tarkowski, Mykolenko, Iwobi, Garner, Onana, Gueye, McNeil and Senor Cheepy Asa Chipa - not so famous Bolivian International.
Subs: Begovic, Lonergan, Godfrey, Branthwaite, Calvert-Lewin, Cannon, and Gray. (Calvert-Lewin withdrawn late due to a twinge in warm up. Replaced by Mills.)
In the stands Juan Batista LB free transfer from Algeria 2nd Division and Yuri Mankovic CM free transfer from Uzbekistan. Not signed in time.
Doucouré sold to Luton who offered 㿅M which we couldn't turn down. It's the hope, isn't it, that kills you?
50 Posted 03/06/2023 at 17:22:32
As regards the names ‘in the frame', we can expect as usual there will be over 60 linked with us in the coming months.
We desperately need a physical presence up front when Calvert-Lewin is unavailable. Players like Mateta and Abraham offer that. But that's only half of the equation. We also desperately need players to put the ball in the net on a consistent basis.

It is only a rumour, but I think this type of player may be the level we are aspiring to. If he craves the opportunity to become a big fish in a potentially bigger pond than Selhurst Park then this may have legs.
