Everton quash Calvert-Lewin-to-Roma speculation
A new rumour that emerged this afternoon suggesting that Dominic Calvert-Lewin was a loan target for AS Roma has apparently been dismissed by Everton.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma were contemplating whether to try to negotiate a deal for the frontman in the coming weeks as they seek a replacement for Tammy Abraham who ruptured an ACL towards the end of last season.
The report claimed that Calvert-Lewin has been offered to the Italian giants but Mail Sport now say that sources from the Blues have played the talk down.
While West Ham United's Gianluca Scamacca has been heavily linked with a switch to Stadio Olimpico, a transfer is yet to be completed, throwing up the possibility of alternatives entering the equation.

Roma would supposedly only be in 'a zero-cost loan with the option to buy', rather than paying a significant portion of the player's wages and a mandatory clause, and the original report in Italy suggested that Calvert-Lewin would be happy to make the move to Rome while Everton may be willing to allow their star man a chance to kick-start his career in the hope of boosting his valuation.

We need goals from somewhere so let's hope there's another striker coming in.
3 Posted 26/07/2023 at 14:21:52
Calvert-Lewin is under contract until June 2025 so can't go without a fee.

Relegation guaranteed as you need to score goals to avoid it and Maupay can not score or assist.

He's on a rumoured £70k a week, that's £3 million a year. Let someone else take the risk.

As Kenny Smith @2 points out, we stick by Dom for two injury riddled seasons and now he's healthy you send him packing to Rome on loan for no fee? You'd have to be an idiot - literally - to allow that to happen if you're DOF. Thelwell is not an idiot, no matter how many people question XYZ he's done all right, and he's an intelligent man.
This is just stupid tabloid shite.
Now, if Roma were buying Dom outright, that's a different story. If they were buying Dom at a reasonable market fee, I'd sell Dom and find another striker. I love Calvert-Lewin and think he's talented to the point where if he were healthy the last two seasons, we wouldn't have even been in a relegation battle.
But the boy is made of glass. I call it "The Mina Effect". If you're continually injured, it doesn't matter how good you may be, you will be of no use. Additionally, all around suffer as your continual injury status places additional responsibilities on teammates, eventually creating controlled chaos and suboptimal conditions which result in losses.
That's what injuries do, and prolonged injured players need to be moved on eventually.
Anywho This story is garbage.
13 Posted 26/07/2023 at 16:02:09
Regarding trying to buy the Almeria striker that Atalanta have upped their offer for, does it not make sense to go for Iheanacho, available for £10m/£15m, 12mths left on his contract?
14 Posted 26/07/2023 at 16:13:41
If it is real then it would suggest that Domenic's fitness is still in doubt to a degree where the club think a slightly less rigorous league might enable him to continue playing.
This might then lead to us selling him for a decent amount in 12 months time rather than have a lad who might not be fit enough to be of serious use in the PL and ending up seeing out his contract because no one else will buy him.
This would free up wages for another guy.
I hope it's all tosh and he comes back to something like his old self.
15 Posted 26/07/2023 at 16:23:27
If you read Mbappe's always been a Blue and wants to play for Everton next season, would you fucking believe that too?
So quick to denigrate the club over stupid clickbait stories.

Roma only scored 50 goals, so they'll surely stagnate or go backwards without an injection of firepower.
Have no idea if this has legs, but DCL isn't the only forward's name floating around Roma these days.

There's more chance of me winning the Euro lotto than Calvert-Lewin going anywhere this season.
32 Posted 26/07/2023 at 19:40:03
Boils my piss how some lunatic on a clickbait site can say:
‘Everton are selling Pickford for nothing to get him off the wage bill and want to give Brighton an extra £40 million for Maupay as they think they under paid…'
And it's taken as absolute truth.
Worst run club in the world. I'm giving up my season ticket etc.
33 Posted 26/07/2023 at 19:46:55
You got to admire their imagination though.
Just get rid of Maupay.

35 Posted 26/07/2023 at 20:09:05
Calvert-Lewin had averaged 1.5 goals a season for the last two seasons I think?
36 Posted 26/07/2023 at 20:10:18
All this delay makes me wonder whether El Bilal's decision favouring Atalanta is as clear-cut as they would like us to believe. Maybe the kid is in two minds which way to jump.
37 Posted 26/07/2023 at 20:20:16
On the other hand, being Everton and finding a 10-15 goals striker is not an easy task as we lately see...
38 Posted 26/07/2023 at 20:33:30
People on this site saying "Buy this lad, buy that lad as back-up to Calvert-Lewin…" What? To hold his purse on the bench?
He gets £3 million a year and we had zero return. Get a new strike force and let him fight for his place.
39 Posted 26/07/2023 at 20:35:19
So the only club in the Premier League without a fit striker (I don't count Maupay) is willing to let their only recognised injured striker go on loan… for free??
I wouldn't even put that one past Bill Kenwright to dream up. However, the paranoia sets in, doesn't it. It's just too ridiculous that there may be something to it.
For the love of god, can we just sign a striker? 5 days till August and we've needed one for 2 years… 'Proactive' would never be a word in a long list to describe this club.
40 Posted 26/07/2023 at 20:35:20
I agree that Toure may be wobbling. That was probably Atalanta's concern when they went on the info offensive. Romano got kind of weird about it on his YouTube video.
He really let his Italian show with a brusque ‘deal completed, done' or something like that. That was what got me so interested. Cue more spy theme music.
41 Posted 26/07/2023 at 20:44:47
Anyone who saw the game at Brighton, where his turn created the first goal inside a minute of the start, before he then ran riot to lead the best performance of last season, must be wondering what madness this is.
Or else, perhaps we need reminding of the winning goal against Palace the season before.
May be a more or less constant fitness worry, but we'd be in a lower league without his contribution.
42 Posted 26/07/2023 at 21:10:53
If they needed those funds to buy Toure, then we may get a few more days to convince Toure to move here.
43 Posted 26/07/2023 at 21:16:04

Better still, let's throw a few of our own into the pot. After all, we need something to do when there's no proper football on, and we can't afford to go to the pub now beer is £63M a pint!
If I wasn't on a beach in Barbados at the moment, I could get really depressed with all this rubbish!
46 Posted 26/07/2023 at 22:23:29
Who says he is healthy? And if he is made of glass!
Don't believe this for a minute… but who knows with Everton?
47 Posted 26/07/2023 at 22:36:54
Why would we pay all his wages whilst allowing him to kick start his career playing for someone else? May as well play him ourselves if we are paying.
If he doesn't regain his fitness, it will not matter where he is because he won't be attracting interest from anybody.
48 Posted 26/07/2023 at 22:44:03
Buy a tall young striker who is 2 years away from being ready but a fantastic prospect at 17 or 18 years old.
Still lots of ways to get more goals in this season and have a better striker situation next season, and the season after too.
Afternote: Also great to see Virginia looks like the loans have turned him into a Premier League ready goalie.
Get Kouyate and anyone else who looks like they have a chance, to go out on loan playing a season in professional football to take a leap in development.
No point being the best classroom accountant but never tried using accounting software and presenting to a director, or best classroom builder but never carried bricks on a real site. No point being great in an academy but never played in a professional league!
49 Posted 26/07/2023 at 22:59:11
2 years left on a deal when he can walk out on a free, no sign of a new deal, and 2 years out injured – from a risk point of view, we would be better off with the cash and moving on.
We all want him to be the player of 2 years ago, but that's our hearts talking.
As a club, I think we need to move on, and accept Calvert-Lewin isn't taking us forward. 2 years on his deal = £10.4M, plus those figures – that's £45M the club might be committing to for a handful of goals.
Same for Gray, Iwobi, Maupay, Gomes, Holgate, Keane, Alli, Gbamin, Mykolenko. Turn the squad over, and get players in that are good enough for the fight.
50 Posted 26/07/2023 at 23:08:32
Someone like Toure seems an ideal fit, in that he fits the style and could fill in for Calvert-Lewin, who simply won't be able to play 5-6 games consecutively but, if managed well, he could play maybe 4 in 6, while having someone young and with potential able to step in when Calvert-Lewin needs to be wrapped up in cotton wool, come on after 60 or 70 minutes, and ultimately push Calvert-Lewin for the starting role.
Worry is we're waiting on a decision from Toure, despite all indications being that he wants the Atalanta move. That move seems dependent on Hoilund being sold, which could stretch out if Toure is really convinced that's where he wants to go, he might just keep waiting to get the green light, while we are kicking our heels waiting just in case.
Hope it's not the case and work is being done on the Plan B (or C, D...) cause we need someone in asap.
Then focus on a new defender, and ideally another forward who could ideally could play both right and left.
I would also like to see someone come in for central midfield, a loan with option to buy for someone like McTominay would be brilliant but I can't see it. Gana is 34 but, despite being very fit, and improving during the run-in, an injury to him and we are very light in defensive midfield.
Doucouré had a great spell, but we know what he's been like over the course of his time here, and given Chelsea's difficulty in getting Caicedo, a move late in the window for Onana wouldn't surprise me.
51 Posted 26/07/2023 at 23:21:12
We all know that it is unfounded speculation by much of the gutter media who have nothing else to write about and so they make up stories simply because it is the transfer window.
Everton do have quite a few players who were little or no use to them last season and arguably Calvert-Lewin is one of them because of his injury but, until he is 100% fit and playing regularly, I doubt very much Everton will consider moving him on.
If he is playing regularly but not making any real impact, then I am sure they will want to cash in on him before his contract expires.
52 Posted 27/07/2023 at 01:09:46
Seems that Chelsea want £40 million for him.

'Nuff said.
And, whilst those of us who right now still daily fantasise about their dreams of betterment next season are to be respected (despite the grim reality long since engulfing us became apparent to many a sentient organism), I expect, at best, yet another last-minute escape from relegation.
Further, the creation and finance to build the new stadium (if it's ever completed) will surely render us unable to ever get close to any version of profit for very many years after it opens.
And it's all because we still have a hapless dickhead owner too proud or stupid to address the glaring inadequacies of the one now very wealthy, self-serving avaricious shyster who's still Chairman of our disintegrating club.

One about us selling with zero truth, quotes or insight. Creates a load of clicks and debate…
Second about us refusing to sell, with zero quotes, truth or insight. Again, creates loads of clicks and debate.

58 Posted 27/07/2023 at 09:41:25
Somebody said yesterday that nothing would happen until the end of the month because it's the end of the financial year! I thought it was the end of June?
How many games will Calvert-Lewin play this season? I can't see Mourinho's patience lasting too long if he breaks down again. Remember how he treated Luke Shaw, who actually had a genuine (undiagnosed at the time) injury. Look at Shaw now!!!
Fake news again!!!

I know the finances have been raked over expertly by the Esk, but it is not a case of can we afford to get another striker, we simply cannot afford to repeat last year's mistakes.
No sign of Calvert-Lewin in match action this pre-season, despite him returning to training before everyone else...

Here's me assuming (yes, yes, I know...) that, with a close season, Calvert-Lewin will be fit and ready to go, over his injury woes.
As you say, who even knows if he's healthy!
Solid point.
64 Posted 28/07/2023 at 04:53:39
I reckon we should get what we can for him to get his wage off our books.

Other clubs are able to bring in striking options, I just don't get it how Everton fail every window. I like Dom, but I'm a bit weary of all the uncertainty and speculation.
Come on, Everton!
