Aston Villa 3 - 2 Everton

Into Euston. A shorter trip than when I go to Goodison, but not to be. I’ll explain later.

I was sat on a table with three young people, who annoyingly played some name game thing for ages and were complaining that the carriage was too warm. I just went to sleep and woke up when we got to Birmingham New Street.

I purchased a return ticket to Witton. £2; bargain. I then made the short walk to Villa Park. I was earlier than anticipated, so sat in an adjacent park enjoying the Birmingham sun. I got bored, so decided to go for a walk.

I spotted a pub, as I hadn’t had a drink yet. Now, I know a lot of places nowadays have a no away fans policy, which I personally feel is not necessary, but I thought I’d try my chances. But this one was season ticket holders only. Back to the park bench to drink some water.

I waited for Greg, who had the tickets on his phone. I got a text from him saying he was across the road from the away entrances, wearing a blue hoody and black cap. I had a random thought that made me think of those old spy films where agents met and exchanged a codeword or newspaper!!

Anyway, Greg and I joined the queue. And what a queue it was. At all the turnstiles, people were getting agitated, and I have to say, as much as Villa are admired for what they’ve achieved on the pitch in recent years, their stewards were losing control and supporters were clamouring to get in for kick-off. The system was not the best. Eventually, the police came in to assist with the body checks that were slowing the process.

Greg scanned me in first and then himself. We got in and made our way up the many steps to take our seats next to Neil. Villa does that flame thing and although not close to the pitch, as we were in the upper section, you could still feel them.

When the team was announced, not that I go there, but I’m glad I wasn’t looking at the Live Forum as I’m sure many would have been frothing at the selection of Young. In honesty, he wasn’t our worst performer.

We were on the back foot against a very good Villa side. But then we go ahead with McNeil’s tenacity to win the ball off Onana and drive forward to slot it in past the Villa keeper.

Then Dominic nods one in after a great delivery from McNeil. I was convinced it was offside at the time, as we were right in line from our vantage point. Neil told me the bloke next to him said it was onside, so he was confident.

We waited nervously as VAR took its usual eternity to decide… Goal! We are 2-0 up! Could this be us out of the blocks? Long way to go at that point, so I wasn’t counting my blue chickens.

Villa pulled one back, but we were still in front. Michael Keane has to do better. That is a centre-back's ball all day. But we still had our noses in front. Maybe Pickford could have claimed it.

We had a great chance to go 3-1 up, when Calvert-Lewin got through after the best move of the match with some slick passing and movement but didn’t take the chance early enough. If anything, I think he could have laid it off to Ndiaye for a tap-in. And then later in the game, he rattled the crossbar. I was getting ready to celebrate.

Then it started. Harrison bizarrely plays in Watkins. I don’t know what he was thinking. Maybe that he was playing for Villa? Watkins kindly accepted the invite.

There was not a lot we could do about their 3rd goal. At first, I thought Pickford could have done better, as he got there. But as Neil called it, the player put a wicked swerve on the ball, so he had no chance, and in defence of the goalkeeper’s union, you don’t always realise the pace of the ball as well. It was simply a great strike.

Once again, our midfield was easily calved open as Villa controlled the middle. Or they were bypassed as we thumped it forward. They must have neck-ache watching that ball go over them. I get the impression Idrissa is having to do or trying to do too much on his own.

Tim had a quiet game, and I personally didn’t notice Mangala. McNeil had a decent game. A goal and a great delivery for Calvert-Lewin’s goal. But we didn’t keep possession and a lot of the players didn’t look comfortable on the ball. As the game went on, there was a definite lack of confidence.

The defence increasingly played very narrow, and we are missing Branthwaite. A bit worrying that we are pinning our hopes on a young centre-back, but he and Tarkowski struck up a good partnership.

Not everyone’s favourite and he did his usual of allowing the ball to get behind him, Keane did make some crucial interceptions and played okay. Tarkowski still doesn’t look his normal self.

To my previous point about Branthwaite? Mykolenko went off, but apparently it was illness and not an injury. Garner came on as right-back and done okay, but they were hammering our right-hand side. Ashley Young went to left-back, but at times, I was struggling to see where he was playing.

I wonder if young Dixon would have made a difference given their bombardment of our right flank to counter the pace of their winger? O’Brien came on, but had little impact, but I felt for him being put into the right-back position.

Something has to change. On the pitch, the manager has to change his tactics. Once again, as the match went on, I was struggling to see any shape. I read his interview on the way home. I wish I hadn’t, as I was still a bit raw.

Off the pitch, get this ownership issue sorted, Mr Moshiri, so we can move forward. Textor spoke last week and was almost immediately countered by the interim CEO. Maybe Textor jumped the gun, but left hand and right hand not talking to each other springs to mind? And that is the first time I’ve heard an Everton CEO communicate for a long time.

Whether this leads to a change of manager remains to be seen, but I doubt it will until this is sorted out. My brother sent me an image of Moyes last night. Some are calling for him to come back, he is one of them, but not for me. He’s the past and would split the fan base in my opinion.

We need to move forward and change the mentality of the club at the top. I get the feeling some in the corridors of power might be uncomfortable with that if they remain. Lessons demonstrate that any new owner coming in would bring in their own people and shake the club up from top to bottom.

The trip back ended up being an epic. I left and made my way back to Witton station. There was a queueing system in place and, having made the journey earlier, once they let us onto the platform, I just got on the first train assuming it would be going to New Street. No. I ended up in Walsall and had to wait for a train back to New Street.

It didn’t stop there. Now New Street is an impressive station, more like an airport terminal, but it is so complicated to navigate to get to the platforms. To compound it, the platform got changed three times. More steps. I was certainly getting them in. I eventually got home around half-past midnight.

I think under normal circumstances, that result wouldn’t look as bad as it does right now if it wasn’t for the terrible start. Villa are a very good team right now.

Two important matches coming up. Southampton in the League Cup and then Leicester City. Surely this dismal run must end soon. I still think we’ll be okay once we turn the corner.

Okay, Man of the Match… and there weren’t many contenders. I’m divided between Ndiaye and Calvert-Lewin. Despite his miss at 2-1, I’ll go for Calvert-Lewin. It’s a lonely existence as an Everton striker right now and he got a torrid time from their centre-backs but kept going.

The supporters were loud and noisy, but the atmosphere gradually depleted as the inevitability sank in. From where we were sat, the players got a half-decent reception.

Once again, thank you to Greg for the ticket and to Neil for facilitating. Great to see you both.

See you at the next one, Blues. I’ll meet some of you on Tuesday. Sorry I couldn’t be more upbeat.

Danny, I know you are eternally optimistic.

At 2-0 up, how confident were you of us winning the game?

And at 2-1? What was the mood of Blues at the Villa Park?

Danny, you called it.

Young, Garner and O'Brien all played at right back yeserday while we had a specialist in that position on the bench unused. Dixon was our best player in his last Premier League appearance, but has not featured since. Dyche has used him as a scapegoat for that defeat.

Keane and Tarkowski are not working as a combination, but the centre-backs have not been rotated.

Harrison is completely ineffective on the right but is selected nonetheless, simply because he tracks back. Well he wasn't doing that yesterday and his glaring error led to Villa's equaliser.

These are the type of decisions that are leading me to lose confidence in Dyche. His replacement? 50% of our fans would instantly reject Moyes, so let's put that one to bed right now.

Danny, think I will defend Pickford for the first goal. It was a delicious cross from Digne, curling high over Pickfords head, who then had turn to his back post, with the header from Watkins past him before he knew it. Definitely Keane to blame for that, he should either win the ball in the air, or at least block Watkins getting the header in. Just one thing about Pickford and his long balls, which many on here complain about……I see Ederson the Man City goalkeeper had an assist for one of Haalands yesterday. What was it, a long hoof ball down the middle?

As for the third, I don’t think even the Villa fans thought it had gone in, as the stadium had this quietness about it for a second or two, before they realised the ball had gone in. Pickford had absolutely no chance of saving that screamer from Dujan.

As for DCL and his first one on one……yes he should have scored it, but plenty around me, including the two pessimists (You know who they are), thought he may have been offside. I don’t know as I haven’t seen any highlights, but FFS, at least score and let VAR decide. Just thought he was really unlucky with his third attempt, shoving, Konsa I think it was, off the ball and then rattling the bar with a thunderous shot.

Whilst I know it’s still early doors, but the next four games we simply have to pick up a few points. Hopefully Branthwaite will be back to reinforce the defence. I would play him against Southampton on Tuesday night, to see how his fitness is, and also play Roman Dixon at right back. The lad did fine down at Spurs, and couldn’t understand why he didn’t play against Doncaster in the next game?

Sounds like your journey home was just as bad as ours. It took over ninety minutes from the final whistle, getting back to the coach, and then getting to the motorway, arriving at The Rocket just before 22.30.

Despite the worst start we could imagine I still think we'll be ok this season. 🤞

Thanks Danny.
The games been done to death and for me now nothing will change until the manager is changed. He’s at the root of it with his one dimensional tactics and inability to see the blindingly obvious - that some players are just not good enough and are haemorrhaging goals and points.
IF we bring in Moyes we’re just going over the same ground again - survival until the next manager. It’s like Dejavu all over again. We need to be bold and grasp the nettle. Get a young, ambitious manager in who has more than one game plan. But not Moyes.
Re the queues at Villa Park it’s always been so. I remember the day of the Hillsboro disaster when we were, by the grace of God, at Villa Park and not in Sheffield. The crush that day was also horrendous but we weren’t stuck in those deadly pens.
Let’s hope for an upsurge in fortune and tactics soon. I genuinely hope Dyche can prove me wrong and find a way, but I really don’t think he has another way in him.

Great notes as ever, Dan, thanks.

I wouldn't mind the Crystal Palace manager if Dyche goes, he seems to be doing a good job down there, I wonder if John Textor has whispered in his shell like?

Mark #6, I remember being at Hillsborough for the 1977 League Cup Final 1st Replay. As you say, those pens were totally inadequate.

Danny to say Garner done okay at fullback, I thought he was very poor, he spent most of the time nearer to Tarkowski than the Villa winger, and nowhere near his man to stop the crosses, especially for the first goal, though Keane should have done a lot better. Dyche has made big mistakes in his team selections and substitutions in every game so far. Dixon was the only natural right back on the bench, after his performance against Spurs, why is he now being overlooked, does Dyche not believe in youth? Harrison has been awful, and substituted in every game he started, why can't Dyche see that Tim and Gueye are being overrun in every game, and drop Harrison for Garner or Mangala, Villa had 3 v 2 in midfield and in complete control. What does Keane have to do to get dropped? Dyche can blame Dom for not putting us 3-1up, who had a superb game against two centrebacks, but Dyche needs to man up and admit his selection, subs and formation have a lot to do with our zero points?

Rob, what should have been straight forward was the mother of all trips back. I had a bloke opposite me swearing at himself until Coventry. I thought he might have been talking to someone on his phone, but no, just cursing and muttering to himself!!

Christy that was my point about the defence playing very narrow. That was down to the tactics. Like I said about Idrissa in midfield, I think at the moment, Tarkowski is trying to do much on his own with those around them.

When O'Brien came on he did play wider. He managed to pick up a yellow, but if that referee would have got his book out a bit more often, Villa could have had several, not that I like to see players booked.

Rob (3), you/we wouldn't even be talking about Keane and/or Pickford for their first goal if Garner - who was absolutely fecking awful - had done his job and stayed with the ball and his winger (compunded, because he did exactly the same for their second).

Can we please, once and for all, get rid of the idea that Garner is a right-back. He is not.

Very true Paul. Digne was afforded far too much space on the left and had all the time in the world to deliver his cross. We saw it many times when he was with us before the FSW fucked him off.

Well, it's pretty clear just how pissed off Danny is right now with what must be the dullest headline on here for a while.

Thanks for your support, and Rob and the rest of the 3,000.

Although I have become very disillusioned with football, I enjoyed that write up Danny, because it made me feel like getting on the road again, when you started describing New Street!

Something has got to give soon but I can’t see any real improvements until we are sold Mark. I just hope I’m wrong, because the Old Lady, definitely needs to go out with a bang, so I’m putting everything on Everton winning the cup💙

DCL first miss, could he have squared it to his left to Indaye for a tap in?
Paul Ferry

Absolutely Christopher.

Danny, I think that New Street is a fecking horrible station built and thought through in true bull-ring style. Worst escalators in the history of rail-station escalators that lead down to some sort of dark hell on earth where the same platform can have three designations and all around you are those hideous accents second only to the thick twatty skunks.

Peter @1, the supporters were great from the start. At 2-0 you'd have thought we'd won it. At 2-1 they kept going. At 2-2, a bit of nervousness, but we still thought we could get something.

Then the killer blow. Even then, when Dominic nearly cracked the cross bar, there was hope.

Tony, get back on the road!

Paul @12, it's always a privilege to go and watch the Blues. As much as I love Goodison, especially the away matches.

I remember the 1969 semi final against City. All supporters coming down the M6. We got directed to a car park a long way from Villa Park and had to get a bus to the ground.
We arrived five minutes into the second half and there was
still a queue to get in. Once we were in those already there
said we were the lucky ones. City got a late winner and
the whole day was a disaster.

Steve Brown @ 2,

The fact that 50% would reject Moyes is not going to stop them if they get it in their heads – almost total condemnation of the Benitez appointment didn't faze them so why would a mere 50% opposition.

I actually think that the initial 50% vs 50% seriously not in favour might be overstating it a bit, more like 25% vs 25% but with a volatile 50% undecided, though maybe willing to give 'anybody but Dyche' a go – even Moyes.

But God help him if it doesn't improve quickly and Moyes goes into 'Dithering Davie / bottler Sunderland' mode. This whole thing could turn into an even bigger shit show than it already is.

That said; I'll gladly take a hard-earned point at Leicester, with the risk that a point gained using Dyches's flawed Plan A (no Plan B) will only reinforce his stubbornness.

It's funny isn't it? Our attackers beat ‘bigger' defenders to crosses to score and it's what we expect; our defenders get beaten to crosses and it just shouldn't ever happen. Keane possibly could have done better but Watkins (a very athletic player) just needed to time his leap and he would be favourite for a very well delivered ball.

I have sympathy for Harrison too. He's just trying to prevent the ball getting through to Digne and is really unlucky his contact on the ball just bounces it into Watkins' path. I thought Digne might have gone too early but it was really hard to judge and I think this is where the offside law could do with some tweaking.

If you can be interfering with play and judged to be offside just for being in the goalie's eye-line why shouldn't that same principle be applied for when a defender makes an emergency intervention to prevent a player being played in?

Danny, do you remember Norwich beating Bayern away in 1993?

Lovely moment, if only because I saw us win the league there and, well, I love the city. Might even retire there when the time comes. There's a direct chug-chug train to Lime Street.

Mark,

At Villa, I looked around and their were two tiers of corporate lounges in the stand to our right as well as more on the Trinity Road Stand.

Forget pies, Mark, when we move to the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, it will be prawn sandwiches and those trays they bring around at weddings and posh dinners.

You'll be all over it. Just don't put ketchup on your prawn sandwich!!
