Leicester 1 - 1 Everton

Gaz rolled up at around 8 am and on we routed up the M56, M6, A500 and then M1, reaching Leicester at around 10:15 am. We had what we thought was the bright idea of spinning the car around and parking on Narborough Road, about a 20-minute walk from the stadium, so we could get away quickly after the game.

I had a real clothing attire dilemma. I knew the weather was likely to be very warm in the day, but was also conscious that some heavy rain was due at some point around 3pm. I also had to factor in that in the evening I was heading straight to a friend’s 40th birthday party, and so required some sort of reasonably smart wear. So I went for the jeans, shirt and hoodie, thinking that would suffice to keep me not too uncomfortably warm in the beautiful daytime sun, and offering me some sort of protection for any showers later. But when getting out of the car it felt so warm, I decided to gamble on leaving my hoodie in the car.

I got it all wrong. Walking around Leicester city centre in the daytime, I was too uncomfortably warm in my jeans, and then as we got pounded with rain walking out of the King Power stadium I was well too soggy and wet in my jeans, and didn’t have my hoodie to stay dry. And as it turned out, nobody had really bothered dressing up much at the evening bash anyway, so I could have easily rocked up in shorts and tee-shirt.

Anyway, having parked up we took a fairly pleasant walk into the city centre, and met Chris, Mike and Stewart at a pub called The Globe for food and drink refreshments, before moving on to a cool craft ale bar called Tonne, and then to the Rutland & Derby Arms which was well-populated with match-going fans.

We moved onto the stadium and were at our seats well in time for kick off. It’s a pretty decent stadium the King Power in my opinion. Now 22 years old, it serves them very well and has retained decent facilities.

Everton attacked towards the far end of the stadium in the first half, and, well backed as ever by our loyal followers, the players did a good job of taking the game to Leicester City, while keeping a good shape and remaining solid and difficult for Leicester City to break throw us. Particularly as it felt a bit thrown together due to player unavailability, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Orel Mangala did a good job of disrupting the hosts and moving us forward.

And it wasn’t long before we were ahead. The free kick, put in by I think Dwight McNeil, was cleared, though retained by Orel. He played the ball into Iliman Ndiaye, who worked it very well with Ashley Young. It was a great pass back to him by Ashley, and Iliman took on the panicked defenders and finished brilliantly into the corner. It was a great goal, and sparked some brilliant celebrations in the away end.

We remained on top throughout the half. Leicester City couldn’t quite get to grips with us with the shape remaining very good, and Michael Keane particularly strong defensively. It was probably about 30 minutes into the game when the heavens really opened, every flash lightning and subsequent thunder drawing a gasp from the crowd, and both sets of players did well to keep the game quality up in the tough conditions. We got to the break relatively hassle free, and had to be satisfied with our first half efforts. And should we have had an opportunity at the end of the half? Leicester City’s free kick into the penalty area was cleared upfield, and from what I could tell, Dwight was through on goal. Especially as Abdoulaye Doucoure had been down injured for about a minute of the allotted time, I thought there was no reason for Darren England to blow for half time at that point.

The second half seemed to take an eternity to start and it didn’t occur to us that it was delayed due to the adverse weather. When they finally got back out there, it was a much improved Leicester City who took the game to us. We had opportunities on the counter attack, mainly when Dominic Calvert-Lewin drove at goal having been put in by Dwight McNeil following great work by Iliman. Dominic’s effort was well saved by Mads Hermansen. And not long before he was substituted, Jesper Lindstrom had an opportunity though elected to square it rather than shoot, and the ball was cleared.

Pressure continued to grow and we stayed on the backfoot for some time. It became a bit unbearable to watch really. Changes were definitely needed and I felt swapping out Jesper Lindstrom for Jack Harrison was a good change as the Dane was flagging. The conditions made it heavy for the players and fresher legs were required.

It was a shame we gave up such a soft goal. Leicester City deserved the draw given the pressure they applied, but giving up the goal in that manner was a real shame. I don’t quite know what James Tarkowski was doing, and how that ball popped up the way it did. And Leicester City then got lucky with the bounce between Stephy Mavididi and Michael Keane, and even then, Dwight McNeil probably should have cleared it off the goal line.

This gave Leicester City added momentum, and though not ideal, I was grateful enough to see out the draw. It gets us off the mark, and somehow actually off the bottom. There’s a lot of strugglers down there, and a couple of wins can make a big difference, and more returning bodies will help that. That last 10 minutes were nerve-wracking to the extreme, so it’s a positive we showed good resilience to hold on.

We hoped most of the bad weather had passed, but that wasn’t the case as we got caught in quite the downpour walking back to the car. Gaz drove back incredibly well in awful driving conditions, and I was in relatively good time for the 40th birthday party.

Keep the faith, Toffees.

Player ratings:

Jordan Pickford: Really didn’t have a huge amount to do, though I don’t think he’s quite on form. That moment in the first half was almost disastrous, and could he have commanded his box better for Leicester City’s goal? Anyway, we know he has great ability so not a huge concern, but I feel there’s a bit of room for improvement there. 6

Ashley Young: I thought Ashley did very well slotting in at left back and played a lovely pass to assist the goal. Not a popular opinion, but I think he may prove quite a valuable player this season. 7

Michael Keane: He had a really good game. A shame about the goal, though I felt James Tarkowski was far more culpable there. People can’t wait to get the knives out for Keane, so its only fair to give him credit when he’s done well. 7

James Tarkowski: I hope he can shake off this injury because it feels as though it is hampering him quite significantly. He did OK most of the game, but was really poor for Leicester City’s goal. 6

James Garner: He coped pretty well there at right back and it wouldn’t surprise me if he now gets a run of games there with the unavailability of Nathan Patterson and Seamus Coleman, plus the emergence of Orel Mangala in midfield. 6

Orel Mangala: I was really impressed with Orel. A few errors and he tired a bit towards the end but he is quite bright in that midfield and uses the ball well. I think he’d pair well with Idrissa Gueye. A good performance. 7

Abdoulaye Doucoure: Fair pay to Abdoulaye, he did well in there, certainly for an hour or so at which point he perhaps needed more help. Good to see he still has something to give in central midfield, given he has operated further forward in the last 18 months or so. 7

Iliman Ndiaye: He had a very good game and was a constant threat. As he tired towards the end he ran down a few blind alleys and lost possession a few times, and I felt his race was run and taking him off wasn’t a bad call. He’s our difference maker this season, no doubt about that. 8

Jesper Lindstrom: He’s looking a good player and is getting up to speed. Yet to score, but is looking a goal threat and you have to assume the goals will come. Had a good hour but needed to come off at the point I thought as it got tough in them conditions. 7

Dominic Calvert-Lewin: He worked very hard and lead the line very well. He won countless strong headers up against his centre back and brought others into play very well. A bit unlucky not to score, maybe he might have done better with that second half chance, but a colossal effort overall. My man of the match. 8

Substitutes:

Jack Harrison: You certainly can’t fault his effort, he worked hard for the team, but a lot of the things he did frustrated. 5

Tim Iroegbunam: He looked quite lost out there frankly. 5

I toyed with the idea of restarting player ratings on my reports but ultimately decided against it for some reason.

FWIW, here are mine. I thought Garner (who really shouldn't have been playing because he's been ill; I don't understand why Dyche didn't trust Dixon after he acquitted himself so well against a much better team in Spurs) was dreadful.

Ashley Young was really good and so were Doucouré and Mangala until both dropped off in the closing stages so those latter two dropped a mark each for me.

Pickford 5, Garner 3, Tarkowski 6, Keane 6, Young 8, Mangala 7, Doucouré 7, Lindstrøm 7 (Harrison 3), Ndiaye 8 (Iroegbunam 2), McNeil 6, Calvert-Lewin 6

Nice pub The Globe, Paul, I used to go there when I lived in Leicester teaching at the university. However, I did not really like the city at all – horrible accents, me duck – although it is ringed by lovely countryside and villages.

Strange subs yet again. It's becoming a weekly thing.

Pickford 6, Garner 2, Tarkowski 4, Keane 6, Young 7, Mangala 7, Doucouré 6, Lindstrøm 7 (Harrison 4), Ndiaye 8 (Iroegbunam 3), McNeil 5, Calvert-Lewin 6

I went to Leicester Uni in the 90s, under Prof Peter Jackson, great guy, I quite like the city (sorry Paul) The Globe was indeed a good watering hole when I returned on visits.
Ratings? not sure why you gave DCL a 6 Lyndon, I thought he had a very good game, won everything in the air and held up well.. only really had one chance if I remember and it took an excellent save from a first time effort..
Pickford 6, could and should have come off his line for the goal. Garner 3, he was really out of place and had a night mare pulled out of position and over the place, Tarkowski 5, has not really played well this season and looks quite and not the leader we need him to be, Keane 5, finds himself ball watching and out of position too much for me, Young, 7, probably his best game of the season, credit where its due, especially after recent games. Mangala, 7 a solid debut in the midfield, Doucoure 6, fits and starts player..Lindstrom 6, would have been a higher score with a better finish but some good touches, Ndiaye, 8, great goal, great feet and love the way he runs at players.. I can see a few penalties coming our way.. McNeil 5, for me he is a player who has little consistency but always seems to fall short, but another of Dyche favourites. DCL 8, unlucky not to score, won everything punted to him, laid off well, always troubled the back four. Ndiaye gets the MotM award because he lifted my spirits and scored a great goal..

I passed through Leicester to visit the national space museum and then on to Rutland, I preferred the latter...
I saw the game much the same as Christine who gives a well reasoned post.
I went on the live forum on Saturday and the in game emotion levels give vent to knee jerking comments, all good fun, but the sobering truth on a Monday is the better guide to where we are as a team.
Getting better caveat couldn't be a worse start to a season...

Nice piece Paul.

I was very pleased to see you recognise Ashley Young's superb performance. I thought he was virtually foot perfect and would have been tempted to give him a nine. Funnily enough, I felt the need to say it wouldn't go down well when I said he had an excellent game on another thread. Sad

I'm also with you - and Christine on DCL. He was fantastic often fighting two defenders and winning ball's that favored them. He was drawing warm applause from all around me throughout the game. The weekly bias shown by Michael against a man who has been probably our best player this season is taking away the credibility of his match reports. People who don't see the game rely on these reports and will comment accordingly. For me, his obvious dislike for the player completely clouds his judgement.

I thought Garner had a really good first half (all of our defenders did) Marks of 2 and 3 seem very harsh. Leicester where at home and were always going to come in search of the equaliser. For me at least, I think our full backs are clearly instructed to defend narrowly when we come under the cosh.

Nice piece, Paul, and as I saw it, especially the weather.

I travelled back on the train like a damp squib. My trainers, socks, jeans and hoodie totally drenched. My hair looked like someone had brushed it with a dirty mop. I was getting some strange looks!!

Dave C, like you, I don't do targets, waiting to pounce on them at the earliest opportunity and judge players match by match. That through ball to Ndiaye was sublime. I still don't know how to pronounce that, let alone Tim's surname.

Looking at the ratings of players and the remarks on ToffeeWeb and other sites over the years, I've seen many over hyped remarks for certain players but I think Dwight McNeil is one of the most under-rated players by a lot of Everton fans.

Each to their own opinions, I guess.

I forgot to mention the reason I posted @(7), Paul never even mentioned McNeil in his ratings but thought he should have cleared Leicester's equaliser off the line!

Give him a break, Paul.

Thanks for noticing that, Dave #8.

I'd probably have given him a 6. Works hard for the team and I think is doing well in that inside position, certainly creating chances. But agreed, having seen it since, should have cleared that one off the line.

The more I see the goal, while the defending isn't pretty, it is pretty unfortunate. How that is hit into the ground and bounces in like that is unlucky.

Thanks.

Always wear shorts, Paul, if there's a chance of rain, as your legs will dry off a lot quicker than a pair of jeans!

You must be a lovely bloke because your scores are always so generous.

But I did spot a first Everton appearance in Troy Deeney's team of the week on the BBC site – Ndiaye of course.

Hi Christine, Peter Jackson, I knew him, head of the Economics dept and set up the management school. He died a couple of years ago sadly. On reflection, yep, DCL rated more than a 6. What I like about him, is he never gives up in both boxes (he is at moments our best defender). More to his game than that I know, but he rarely let's us down.

What to say about Jordan Pickford? Regularly picked as Englands number 1 and to be fair to him he hasn’t done much wrong in an England shirt. Great reflexes and shot stopper. Maybe Englands central defenders do better with balls into the 6 yard box than we do at the moment. How much did JB deal with balls into the box with Tarks last season?
But I have always been of the opinion that Pickford does not command the 6 yard box, rarely comes to deal with crosses and this season we have been terrible at conceding goals from crosses.
So come the January sales I would happily swap Pickford for a 6 foot 4 goalkeeper who commands the 6 yard box and comes for crosses. Having played CB for many years I was always pleased to see my goalie claim the ball and take the pressure off me to clear the ball. I know you can’t have everything except for David Raya in a goalie who is 6 foot plus claims high balls, good reflex shot stopper and gives confidence to his defenders.

Oooo Paul, from the title of your article, I was expecting it to be a bit more titillating, but turned out to be a damp squib ;-)

It is always great to read your match reports because they are written so honestly.

I think once the front 4 of Calvert-Lewin, Ndiaye, Lindstrøm and McNeil start getting used to each other, opposing defences will start getting worried. Add to that mix, players like Broja, Chermiti, and perhaps Dele Alli as well hopefully we can start winning some games.

Thanks for the report, Paul. On a warm day with rain forecast I find a light waterproof running jacket is the best solution!

I agree with all your comments and markings. Both Keane and Young performed very well. The tired narrative that they have been the weakest links this season is irksome.

I also thought Garner was a much safer option at right-back than Roman Dixon. While youngster has great pace his, tackling is wild, as was evident in the League Cup tie. In the conditions prevailing on Saturday, he would have been a huge risk.

And yes, Tim Iroegbunam definitely looked lost. Having started the season well as an individual he now needs a period of reflection in which to study how best to work with his team mates. I agree, Mangala and Gana might well be the the better duo in the immediate future.

Much more balanced match report than the rantings elsewhere on the site.

Good to get a point but we need some wins now.
