Everton 2 - 1 Crystal Palace

Up at 5:45 am, allowed the dogs out to pump ship then picked up my mate at 6:15. We got to Costa at Taunton Services to grab a much needed coffee and we were on our way on the coach by 7:45. The journey up to Goodison was uneventful with the sausage rolls I’d bought the day before from my favourite coffee shop in Bovey Tracey being the highlight.

We made it to the Harlech in time for a couple of beers with Bill and Brian and our West Country Blues Chairman, Ian Davies and it was good to see the remarkable John McFarlane still going to the game at 86 years old. Three pints gave change out of £10 – my local in Bovey Tracey would have charged around £17 for those drinks – the moral of the story being "If you want to get smashed, do it in Liverpool"!!

For once, I was in complete agreement with Sean Dyche’s team selection and was very disappointed in how they played in the first half. Palace scarcely allowed us the ball from the kick off and it was no surprise to see them score.

There has been some debate about Pickford not going for the cross. I’m no fan of Pickford and he should come for crosses rather than stay rooted to his line but this cross was too high and hung in the air, totally unsuitable for a keeper to try for it.

The defender (I couldn’t see who it was) could maybe have done better, and we do seem to concede a lot of goals like this one but credit to Palace, they thoroughly deserved to go in front. They almost scored a carbon copy a bit late in the half but Ndiaye was on the post and scuffed it behind for a corner.

We were not competing, Lindstrøm was completely anonymous – and I mean completely. Doucoure was running around but not where the ball was or to where it was going. Calvert-Lewin wasn’t in the game and the only bright spots were the superb Ndiaye, Mangala who was battling it out with three Palace players but never gave up and looked very decent, and the returning Branthwaite who grew into the game and was excellent.

I didn’t join in the boos at half-time – it’s not for me… but I could understand those who did. I think that booing or abusing individual players is out of order but showing displeasure in that way to the whole team seems a bit more acceptable, albeit I don’t see it as constructive. People know if they have underperformed and don’t need to be booed or abused, which can be very counter productive.

I said to my mate that it was amongst the worst first-half performances I had seen – poor in possession, second to loose balls, a failure by most to compete, lack of desire, lack of a proper structure – pretty awful, to be honest.

Out for the second half… and wow!!! From the kick-off, we were fired up. The crowd sensed it and started to vocalise, the players looked hungry and up for the fight and we really needed a goal before the fire burnt out.

What a goal it was, a scorcher of a shot from McNeil which no goalie would have saved. I was in the Upper Bullens close to the Street end and I picked up on the fans there starting to cheer a split second before the ball went in.

The second goal was very well taken by McNeil who had battled hard in the first half without much support. The remainder of the game was managed very well with very few scary moments.

Everyone stepped up to the plate in the second half and I thought it was so similar to the 3-2 win over them a couple of years ago when we secured our safety. As in that game, our first half was dreadful but we then came on strong after the break, scored the goals we needed, then shut up shop. Very similar games, similar outcome and the fans, as in that previous game, really got behind the team in the second half.

Ndiaye looks a cracking player, ran himself into the ground and with a rejuvenated Calvert-Lewin, they gave us an outlet in the second half which must have come as some relief to the defence. Mangala is better than Gana, stronger, more skilful, and reads the game better.

A final word: Ashley Young was excellent, got stuck in, encouraged others and played very neat balls down his flank.

A bit delayed going home due to a nasty looking crash on the M5 but I was home by 11:50 pm so not too bad.

My ratings

Pickford – not his fault they scored but every time the ball is crossed in, he scares me. Not a fan! 5

Young – excellent throughout. 8

Tarkowski – much better with Jarrad alongside. 8

Branthwaite – what a miss he has been. 8

Mykolenko – solid. 7

Mangala – battled hard and played well against a very good Palace midfield. 7

Doucoure – contributed nothing, should have scored and ran without purpose. 3

McNeil – two fine goals and a good performance. 8

Lindstrøm – a point for appearing but to me he did absolutely nothing. Clearly one of those days! 1

Ndiaye – what a great signing. Great control, pace, strength, stamina – this boy is seriously good. 9

Calvert-Lewin – excellent second half and fought hard. 7

Harrison – a really good half from Jack. 8

Garner –  fought hard and was disciplined 7

Gana – held his position well 6

Sounds like a good day out.

I haven't been able to make a game this season so far due to work, holidays and moving house, but I watched this on TV.

I agree on Lindstrøm. He is a frustrating player. Not sure what he gives us as a winger. But until he was dropped, Harrison had tailed off. The kick in the pants certainly rejuvenated him.

The rest of the new guys have given us real hope this season. Without getting the results until yesterday, Ndiaye, Managala and Iroegbunam have made us more solid. We are starting to look like we can score goals and just need to find that solidity at the back.

I have finally got a ticket for next week so I am looking forward to being there for the back-to-back win.

As someone who has made the 300-mile trip to Plymouth (and beyond) almost annually, I take my hat off to you Dave. The anticipated bottleneck around the M5/M6 motorways still does my head in, 40 years on.

I'm not sure I'm capable of a 600-mile round trip in 18 hours!!!

I agree with your comment on the crowd booing, whilst I understand it's down to constant frustration with the team performance, tactics, substitutions etc, it has a negative effect on the team, even worse when individual players are singled out by the growing minority of the mainly younger element of our crowd. It's toxic and needs to stop.

I only disagree with one of your ratings for your team performance marks. I think Mykolenko has been generally poor this season, he lacks genuine pace for a full-back, and for a tall guy, is constantly 'outjumped' for the ball. He also seems to lack general awareness or anticipation of where the ball or opposing forwards are in the penalty area.

In my opinion, he wouldn't lace either Baines or Digne's boots as a left-back.

Anyway, enjoyed your report of the match including your travel escapades.

“For once, I was in complete agreement with Sean Dyche's team”

Have I missed something regarding Tim Iroegbunam?

Apart from a tendency to fade after 70 minutes (reasonably understandable given how hard he had worked in those games) I thought he had mainly impressed and yet his apparent summary demotion to bench duties only has happened without people seeming to notice / be bothered.

I very much disagree that Lindstrom did nothing. At least 3 top quality deliveries in the perfect spot spot for conversion in the first 20 minutes isn't absolutely nothing (although it may not be enough). Unfortunately I think Lindstrom is one of those players some people will never see anything but what they haven't done.

Si, what I think you've missed is the performance of Mangala. He was simply outstanding.

I don't think Iroegbunam has done anything massively wrong.

Thanks for the report, Dave.

The closest I got was the 9-minute highlights on Optus over here but, even on the highlights reel, it didn't look as if we got the ball over the half way line in the first half.

Palace must be sick of us. It's nice to be someone else's bogey team, as we have plenty of our own.

90 minutes of good footy would be nice but right now, we got 3 points and that is what matters. Well done to Dyche for the changes made at half-time and the different attitude from the players.

I agree completely about the booing. If I am out there in a blue shirt, it doesn't matter how much you boo me, it will only make me worse.

Mike (4),

I agree that Mangala is looking like another very good acquisition but I am surprised everyone was okay with Doucouré being selected ahead of Iroegbunam, especially if Doucouré wasn't to be played in his striker-supporting role.

Not surprised Sean Dyche chose Doucouré; surprised all supporters are happy with that.

Andy (5), so they didn't show the Calvert-Lewin skip over the ball two yards from goal, or the Tarkowski header? Clear goal scoring opportunities not making the highlight reel (and apparently completely forgotten by those who were at the match)?

So I was okay with Doucoure purely because he and Mangala played well together at Leicester. I'm not a fan of Doucoure and Iroegbunam looks very good to me – he just needs to improve his fitness and gain experience.

I was sat in Upper Bullens and clearly missed those Lindstrom crosses. From the clips I have seen, he has talent and hopefully will adapt and toughen up.

I'd rather see Doucouré in that position than the attacking midfield or Number 10 role he's previously had. In that advanced role, he dictates that the only route to goal is chasing the opposition defenders. When we have the ball, he's just a disruption.

Whereas in midfield he's just generally poor but at least we have other options ahead of him and he can do his chasing where it's slightly more valuable.

I don't know how he could be picked over the alternatives and what that would be trying to achieve.

Mangala looks neat and tidy. Him, Iroegbunam, Gueye and Garner give us a few options so there's no real need for Doucouré unless we have injuries.

Doucoure, if played as the Number 10, can make a contribution. However, he is no longer the best option in that role anymore.

When his contract runs out at the end of the season I doubt that he will be offered an extension.

Doucoure is not the most talented footballer but he is always up for it and covers a lot of ground harrying the opposition. He also stopped Eze from pulling the trigger early on in the game with a little shove in the back – I know it's not football.

Actually, Eze did not cause us the problems many of us thought he would. I reckon a good share of the credit for that should go to Doucouré.

If it hadn't been for a great bit of recovery defending by Lerma, he probably would have scored a third and we would be lauding him for breaking out of our defence with a lung-busting run. By the way, credit where it's due – Calvert-Lewin did really well to win that ball and lay on a brilliant first-time pass.

Things are looking up – we have the makings of a decent team with the new additions.

A deserved good day out David. I agree about Ndiaye. He's exciting, and will get the supporters on their feet.

As for Doucoure, he'll just do his Doucoure thing. Cover every blade of grass on the pitch, have the odd brain fart, and then pop up with a goal or two.

I did not want Doucoure played deep because I thought he was prone to too many errors in bad areas.

Mangala is far tidier in possession and allows Doucoure to only play two touch and cover ground. He's a force breaking forward and still strong enough defensively to shut down areas of the field.

He'll always make the odd mistake but it is not for lack of effort and I can accept that. If he can limit the fouls where the opposition is going nowhere and get it and give it quickly then we have a great box-to-box midfielder.

Mangala is still the midfield cog for me.
