Season › 2024-25 › News Everton 1 - 0 Mansfield Town [L] Michael Kenrick 27/08/2025 30comments | Jump to last Latest [70'] Everton take on Mansfield Town of League One tonight in the this Carabao Cup 2nd Round tie — the first cup game to be played at the club's new home. Although this is very much the lesser of the two domestic cup competitions, it is a source of frustration to many Evertonians that the League Cup is something the club has never won — despite coming close in a couple of keenly contested finals. There is always talk of 'taking the competition seriously' which contrasts sharply with it also being seen traditionally as an opportunity for fringe players and youngsters to get some all-too-rare senior match play under their belts. Which ethos rules tonight remains to be seen in David Moyes's team selection. Travers, Coleman, Armstrong, Alcaraz and McNeil start alongside Grealish and Barry in a relatively strong line-up. Pickford and Gueye have been given the night off. First Half The visitors got things started 15 minutes late, in their rather nice yellow and blue kit, and tried to push forward but the Blues shut them down. but could not get very far forward themselves. Barry showed some nice moves but then lost a ball played nicely to his feet. He lost the ball again and Mansfield attacked with relish, but failed to make a shot. Everton had another spell of possession, getting to the edge of the penalty area, but not much further after playing it around the houses. A great long ball looked perfect for Alcaraz but he let it bounce through to Roberts. A lovely move through the middle saw a great shot from Alcaraz that forced a fine save from Roberts nothing coming from the corner. McNeil overhit a poor crossfield ball that was meant for Grealish. A long ball to Barry and Alcaraz was not played back properly for McNeil, who was then fouled wide right. McNeil tried to whip it goalward, Roberts palming it over the bar. McNeil with the corner, it was good for Tarkowski ghosting around the back and the far post but well defended. Grealish was roaming across the front third, but not having too much joy as the visitors were keen to thwart everything Everton tried to do. Coleman fed McNeil down the left and his cross looked to cause trouble with Barry in attendance at the far post but the Mansfield defence held firm. Grealish put a great low cross in for McNeil who skied it with a dreadful shot. The move was almost repeated in mirror fashion from the right and this time it was Garner setting up Grealish for a clear shot that was even worse in its execution than McNeil's – if that were possible! McNeil tried a deeper cross to Barry but he was too slow to get moving to where he should be receiving it. Half-an-hour gone and not a lot to show for it. Everton continued to play some nice passing build-up play but with no real end product. Grealish thought he was fouled but Reed had won the ball. Armstrong was played in by Grealish but he drove his low shot at Roberts instead of squaring it to Barry for a tap-in. Mansfield mounted a rare attack, Grealish breaking it down but the Blues break was thwarted. The Blues tried to build again but the passing wasn't slick enough, and Mansfield came closest to getting a shot off from a good cross in. The visitors had another good spell, Everton not doing enough to press them, and they kept working the second ball around. Everton won it back and tried to break but Barry could not evade his defender and back came the yellow shirts just before the break, good cross needing defending by Mykolenko. Tarkowski had a bit of trouble from Evans that could have flared up but the whistle went on a half in which Mansfield had played well while Everton had blown what chances they had created. Second Half The home side restarted slowly until a nice ball seemed to find Alcaraz but he lost it immediately. But The Blues kept working it around with Mykolenko and Grealish driving in, his low shot saved by Roberst. A good corner from Garner, was flicked on to Tarkowski at the far post but again he had no room to finish. Armstrong thought the had a chance but it was closed off and he played it back to Charly Alcaraz, whose brilliant shot curled around, beating Roberts, a superb strike from the South American. McNeil went on a great dribble but then Coleman overplayed it. More good Blues work tried ot advance the ball again, but A ball came through but Barry expected the defender to take it and was surprised when it reached him. Grealish then launched a great counter but somehow Barry lost the ball again when it was passed to him. He was replaced by Beto while Tyler Dibling made his debut in place of Jack Grealish. The visitors were still not making it easy for he home side, with space in midfield at a premium. Garner tried another long-distance blast but it was off target and lacked power. At the other end, Bolton got past Coleman and lashed a great shot toward the far corner, Travers launching himself, but Tarkowski got to stop it with his head. A long ball found Beto but he took too long trying to fake a defender and lost it to another defender sneaking in behind him. A ball broke and Keane flicked it instinctively through to Beto but his shot was really poor, straight at Roberts. Everton: Travers, Mykolenko, Tarkowski, Keane, Coleman, Garner, Armstrong, Alcaraz, Grealish (60' Dibling), McNeil, Barry (60' Beto). Subs: King, Ndiaye, O'Brien, Dewsbury-Hall, Iroegbunam, Onyango, Campbell. Disclaimer () Kieran Kinsella 1 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:38:21 Interesting line-up. Be interesting to see what sort of shape Coleman is in as he seems to have been kept around more as a motivator than active player. Liam Mogan 2 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:40:27 No Chermiti? Out on loan?Strong enough team tbf Kieran Kinsella 3 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:45:16 Odd thing is Moyes last week said "Grealish has never been able to play two or three games in a row," and said we have to decide when to use him carefully. Can he make it three in one week by playing Wolves on Saturday? Mike Gaynes 4 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:46:16 Seems like a good guess, Liam. He needs a loan. That would also mean an incoming 3rd striker, either on loan or off the free agent list. Kieran Kinsella 5 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:46:20 And the other big question: Will Neil Copeland's app update so he can access the ground? Ray Said 6 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:47:06 Good to see us putting out a strong team – how many times have we seen the Blues go out at the early stages of a competition we should be trying to win to breed that winning habit? It will be interesting to see if Armstrong can seize his opportunity to press for a regular place. Josh Horne 7 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:52:31 I'd sooner Grealish was rested for this, it's a pretty meaningless cup nowadays and we should be able to dispatch Mansfield whoever we field. We need him fit and ready for as many Premier League games as possible. Dale Self 8 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:53:37 Liam, Chermiti may be going to Rangers, season long loan. Mike Allison 9 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:55:07 Grealish doesn't need ‘rest' he needs game time.No-one needs to be ‘rested' at this point in the season. This is our best chance of winning a trophy and qualifying for Europe this season. Liam Mogan 10 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:57:35 Thanks Dale - he needs a loan imo Josh Horne 11 Posted 27/08/2025 at 18:58:00 He looked pretty match fit on Sunday, not in need of more game time. 'Rested' was the wrong choice of word, rather not risked. Ashley Roberts 12 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:00:17 Where is Aznou? Colin Glassar 13 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:00:26 Agreed Mike, Grealish needs to get the cobwebs out of his body.Sending Chermiti to Rangers would be a mistake. They are rubbish and so is Scottish football. Somewhere like Stoke, Preston or Blackburn would be better. Toughen him up. Lee Courtliff 14 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:06:14 Glad to see we've named a strong team, looking forward to watching Armstrong play but I'll be more than relieved when Jack is substituted after 60 minutes with us 3-0 up and cruising. The thought of him getting injured after the euphoria of Sunday scares me. His presence lifted the club. And he's clearly a cut above every other player we have, imo. Jack Convery 15 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:08:59 The Rangers centre-forward, who refused to come on as a sub at the weekend, may be coming our way. Who knows. Danny O'Neill 16 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:10:17 No trophy is meaningless to me. A cup win builds momentum in the league. Ask any Newcastle supporter if winning a trophy at Wembley meant nothing to them.Strong team, get it won, then make changes. Not the other way around. Start weak and end up chasing the game. Dale Self 17 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:10:29 I think he is going to Lille, Jack. Kieran Kinsella 18 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:13:04 MLS "legend" Dom Dwyer is on the bench and their team includes Max Dickov son of "City legend" Paul Dickov. Dale Self 19 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:15:26 Colin, Chermiti might pick up some cards in the Championship. He is somewhat hot-headed. Anthony O'Sullivan 20 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:16:50 Happy to see a strong team from the start. Winning and losing is infectious. Happy to get on a winning streak. If we are 3 up on 60 minutes then hook off the players that played on Sunday. Liam Mogan 21 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:34:35 If Chermiti goes to Rangers (the horriblest team in the world), he could be playing European football at least Andrew Clare 22 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:36:54 Any links? Tony Abrahams 23 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:41:07 I wasnt going to respond to it being a pretty meaningless cup, Danny, but I think you say it all when you talk about last seasons final.I suppose the only time a cup isnt meaningless, is when you have just got your hands on the trophy and paraded it in front of your supporters, and the only time a club isnt meaningless, is when it competes to win bloody cups.No wonder we have never gone so long without winning a trophy before? If every premier league game is meaningful, then surely every single cup game must mean even more, with my logic being that we might just be capable of winning a cup, whereas we have got absolutely no chance of winning the league right now? Nick Page 24 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:42:33 Liam, “Rangers (the horriblest team in the world)”I'll see your Rangers and raise you Liverpool (the horriblest team in the universe).COYB Liam Mogan 25 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:46:43 🤣 Nick. You're 100% correctRemember when kids had half n half bobble hats in the 80s. Those kids who wore the RS/Rangers ones all ended up with brain damage. Michael Kenrick 26 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:51:44 Kick-off delayed by 15 minutes. Chaos at the turnstiles? Christy Ring 27 Posted 27/08/2025 at 19:54:30 Chermiti is on his way to Rangers I expect, especially when he's not in the squad tonight, so I presume we're getting another striker before the deadline? I see where the redshite scouts are barred from the Chelsea academy after poaching the winger who scored the winner, expecting big compensation. Nick Page 28 Posted 27/08/2025 at 20:01:27 Hahahaha, Liam. Yep, I remember them. I had an Everton bobble and took the bobble off, no idea why looking back, but everyone did.Christy - the redshites have been trawling around south London for a few years now poaching all sorts of players. The absolute Biffs. Jake FitzGerald 29 Posted 27/08/2025 at 20:02:35 Careful Liam, theres a few of them on here. Neil Copeland 30 Posted 27/08/2025 at 20:52:57 Kieran #5, no it didnt but they felt sorry for me and gave me a paper ticket instead!
