It has been revealed that, earlier this year, Everton reached an out-of-court settlement with Leeds United for compensation in connection with their first PSR breach for the period ending with the 2021-22 season.

The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Leeds Utd and Everton reached an out-of-court settlement earlier this year. Sources with knowledge of the case said the Leeds hierarchy did not believe their case was strong enough to go to court. Therefore, the two clubs reached an agreement earlier this year,

No details of any financial arrangement have been disclosed, but for context, 17th-place Leeds Utd finished one place and 1 point behind Everton, receiving £2M less in merit payments determined by their final Premier League placings in 2021-22.

Leicester City, Southampton and Nottingham Forest also initially indicated they would consider legal action after the Independent Commission had established that clubs could sue Everton for compensation. Burnley are currently pursuing their compensation claim for around £50M against Everton

So sometime earlier this year, Everton settled out of court with Leeds United over our PSR breach in 2021-22 season. No word on when the settlement actually happened or how much it was for.

The Athletic reports that Everton are also in settlement talks with Burnley, but that case appears much more likely to wind up in court. Leeds didn't think it had a court-quality case, but Burnley obviously believes it does.

Can't stand this guy but he's probably somewhere close with this:

Stephan Borson told Football Insider, “I did speculate in March when we first found out that Burnley were suing Everton about what might have happened to the other teams, and the one thing that was absolutely clear that they had some kind of claim was Leeds, probably only a claim for one place in the league.

“That would have been worth £2-2.5M. I think they'll have just taken a discount for the question as to whether they'd win the case. I don't know, 40-45%, and probably settled for about £1-1.5M, something like that.

“It's not worth the battle. It's a very manageable amount for Everton to pay. It goes away, takes out the risk, takes out the distraction, takes out the legal fees, and everyone moves on. I think it's something like that.”

That'll make it hard to spot in the next Annual Report and Accounts... by which time, we'll all have forgotten about it.

I saw him coming out with this a while back, Michael, and unfortunately he does make sense -- it's a “loss of chance” case -- if Burnley can prove at least 10% of their outrageous £50 million claim, they could get £5 million

It's a stupidly low burden of proof. It's that part of old English common law that is just pure bartering. Easier to settle than fight.

So Leeds sue Everton for the loss of 1 league place to the tune of £2 million?

But how much did they get in parachute payments?
