It?s not all Kenwright?s fault!

By Adam   Cunliffe  ::  11/07/2011   89 Comments (»Last) Firstly may I say in no way do I support Bill Kenwright. I believe through failures such as the King?s Dock fiasco, Destination Kirkby and his complete lack of business plan, he has run Everton into the ground. The man is a creep, a weasel even. What sticks with me is how, after the penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea ,he immediately took centre stage and tried to steal the limelight from the 11 lads and the 9,000 travelling Evertonians. The man does himself no favours.

I don?t want my article to be taken in the wrong way. It?s not a defence of Kenwright. It?s just an attempt to demonstrate that removing him wouldn?t necessarily cure Everton?s problems. Given the choice, I?d love him to be gone but the cold hard facts are this:

Everton are better than 13 and are worse than 6 other teams in the Premier League. Removing Kenwright isn?t going to change the fact that the top 4 can spend mega-bucks on any Tom, Dick or Harry they want; it would just put us on par with them at very best... and then what happens?

We can?t control what other teams can spend; if they can pay £200k a week for somebody, chances are they?ll be better than us. If Kenwright went tomorrow, or failing that we just got a cash injection from a business man, I don?t think we would be able to challenge just like that. Spurs have Van der Vart, Bale and Modric (for now) and they?re all top top players. Liverpool have Gerrard, Saurez and Carroll who are again stand-out players. Then of course all the top 4 have world class players throughout their squads let alone teams. Put simply, they?re just better than us.

My fear as a relatively young Evertonian is that I?ll never see the Royal Blues win the title. I want us to win one more of everything than Liverpool ? that?s what nil satis nisi optimum is all about after all, eh? Always striving to be the best. This article isn?t about giving up hope, because we?ve all seen that, on our day, we can beat every team above us. But over 38 games a season, looking at the teams above us, 7th is were we should be finishing.

We?re just not as good as those above us. We?ll probably finish there again next year... I?m not just accepting it or claiming it?s good because it?s not. I just understand why we?ll probably end up there. As silly as it sounds, I want to win the damn league and so should everyone reading this. But we probably won?t because, over the course of the season, teams are just better than us.

Part of supporting a team is to stick by them through thick and thin. Hopefully the time will come when we can expect to win every game home and away, and anything less than the semi-finals of the Champions League is unacceptable. But, whilst football is run by corrupt men like Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini, and when Man City and Chelsea can pay £200k a week as someone?s wages, it?s just not going to happen.

And losing Kenwright isn?t going to change the fact there are teams in better positions than us. This could be down to Kenwright?s incompetence or even Moyes?s poor use of the money he?s actually been given. (Bilyaletdinov? The jury?s still well and truly out...) But by removing the Board or even the manager and investing in the squad, building a new stadium, investing in youth and completely overhauling the business plan and structure won?t guarantee us a higher place in the league.

It will ensure the club is run successfully and then maybe in the long term we might improve. But this won?t change the fact that teams above us can go out and spend gazillions on anybody they wish. It?s a sad fact but, while there are 6 teams who?re better than us, we?ll probably just finish 7th ? with or without Kenwright or Moyes.
