Jack Rodwell: Stay or Go?

By Richard   Reeves  ::  30/07/2011   38 Comments (»Last) For me and I think most Evertonians, Rodwell had a very disappointing season... but I look at that as his second season which to many footballers is notoriously difficult (remember Rooney's second season). What I find a bit worrying is that, in recent threads, when people have asked what players you would sell to generate money, the name that is top of the list in my opinion seems to be Rodwell.

I've seen enough of Rodwell to firmly believe he will be a top player in years to come and if we sell him now I think we would come to regret it. If he went to a higher profile club and developed as some think he will, then his value will rocket and we as fans will look at it as another underpriced sale of a talented young player by a desperate chairman.

Another concern for me ? and please don't laugh when you read this ? but, if Moyes does leave in the near future, then surely it's better to keep hold of the decent younger players rather than holding onto players in their late-twenties & early-thirties who won't have that much sell on value. And let's face it, the next manager will have to sell to buy if the same Mickey Mouse board are in control.

For me, the decent young players are our future but I'm not saying that I would sell any of the players mentioned in the press, like Baines or Jagielka, as they are both important players. It is probably a situation of sell to pay off a debt and buy a cheap replacement, although it looks like Jags is a Gonner. I know that, once a player's head has been turned, there's not much you can do as it's only a matter of time before they go where the really big money is and a taste of Champions League football... which is why I think Fellaini will be gone within a couple of years.

I am dreaming of a future where we have Rodwell, Barkley, Coleman, Duffy, Mustafi and McAleny in the team. I know it's a dream because, come the start of the season, we'll be playing a 4-5-1 defensive formation with Saha, Neville, Osman, Distin and Howard in the line up and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Heitinga was crowbared into midfield with some lucky bugger coming on for the last 5 or 10 minutes in a game.

Well, let me dream... because the thought of seeing Barkley play and the thought of Rodwell having a good season (which I think he will) is the only thing giving me any kind of optimism on our season ahead. On a bit more of a positive note, the new home kit is top drawer. We've got the best home kit in the Premier League ? which is something I always say ? but this time we definitely have.
