Gary Ablett

By Neil   Smith  ::  02/01/2012   15 Comments (»Last) Following the tragic death of Gary Ablett, these are my memories of him in an Everton shirt.

1) Having the biggest grin walking around Wembley lapping up the FA cup win.

2) Looking gutted at scoring that own goal against Wimbledon.

3) Clearly jumping at the chance to join  Everton despite being a boyhood red.

4) Scoring five goals and celebrating them all in the same way. With a sprint and a smile.

5) Tearing down the left side of Elland Road to put a cross in for Amo to make it 4.1 against Spurs.

6) Making a magnificent block tackle as Les Ferdinand was poised to score for QPR in March 95. We went on to win the game during a relegation battle. The tackle was as good as a goal.

7) On a roasting day at Wembley bring the only player to walk over to the Evertonians with the Charity Shield.

8) Providing the pass for Beardsley to score the winner in the 92 derby. Then taking off on one of his celebration runs.

9) Giving great service to the academy

10) During his illness maintained tremendous dignity to raise awareness with interviews and photos.

Gary was with us for four years. He played 156 games and scored 6 goals

He won the FA Cup and The Charity Shield.

A great football man. A gentleman.

Rest in Peace, Gary.
