Until now I?ve always seen our chairman as a daft old sod. Not as a liar or someone who would rather keep the club even if it meant we went into gradual decline. I have been irritated by him, it has to be admitted. The silly statements he makes in the media, his failure to find real funds for Moyes when we finished 4th or with his incompetent management during the disastrous summers of 2008 and 2009.
But his conduct across this transfer window and the last one has made me join the swelling ranks who believe he needs to clear up and go.
He has ?previous? in making misleading statements in regards to transfer funds. During the summer of 2008 he told us there would be ?funds available for players?. As time dragged on, we sold Andy Johnson and, that combined with the sale of James McFadden in the previous window, should have meant there would be approximately £15 million available. Only once Johnson had gone did we actually buy anyone for a decent amount and that was Fellaini. The rest were bargain basement deals or frees.
The next summer the same thing occurred. Following a damn fine season under Moyes where, despite chronic injuries to the Yak, Arteta and Jags, he reshaped the team and got us to a commanding fifth place and we beat the very best to reach Wembley.
The reward? Nothing. Funds were again apparently going to be available and, as early as June we were allegedly making a bid for Kyle Naughton. Then Spurs swooped and scuppered the £4 million deal. But it all seemed a little convenient as if it were a red herring to throw the fans off the scent that there was no real intention to buy anyone until we had sold a big name. Let?s face it, nothing else happened and that £4 million was not used for any other deals. By mid August, Joleon Lescott?s sulking meant Moyes was forced to sell his prized centre back for a massive fee. Then, and only then, did the deals get made.
Yes Bill, funds will be available for buying new players but what you forgot to mention was that we?d have to sell some big assets first. It?s that sneakiness that has irked me but this season he has gone too far. After another pathetic summer in 2011, we conveniently sold Arteta and Beckford in the final hours of the transfer window thus giving Davey absolutely no time to spend the money or face pressure or speculation from the fans knowing we finally had some funds.
However, at that point, he should have made it clear that this excess £14 million would mostly be used to pay debts. But what did that idiot do? He came out and announced in September that the Arteta money would be made available to Davey in January, presumably to avoid doom and gloom. I think we all probably were clinging onto that hoping to buy someone good in the New Year. I rather cynically never thought it would all be available and, lo and behold, come January, Davey is openly admitting it?s gone to the bank.
I don?t really know where to start. Kenwright should have said some of the Arteta money would be made available if the banks would allow it. Instead, he raised our expectations in what only seems like a way of avoiding more criticism when the Blue Union was gathering pace. So how dumb or forgetful does he think we are? Did he think we wouldn?t be expecting a new signing now? He?s either patronizing or he?s made a failed attempt at being crafty.
I would rather he was crafty than fail at trying to be so. At least if he were the former, it might mean we know he is managing the club in a clever way when it comes to accounts and dealing with signings. I somehow doubt that is the case and his memory can hardly be called sharp given this cock up. Has this luvvy lost it? He certainly fluffed his lines but he?s left Davey to be his understudy.
Incompetent Bill has played this so badly and hasn?t even come out to explain why we aren?t using the money for new players. It?s infuriating and insulting to the fans and, also, to Davey. I dread to think what he must be thinking. I think we are far too hard on Davey on this site.
I see him as a good, loyal and energetic man who has done a lot for our beloved club. He came in as a bit of a wild card but showed, in his early days, he could get the utmost out of his players. It was limited but effective football with the one problem that we seemed to lurch from a great season to a poor season. He corrected that in time and moved us up the table with some inspired buys.
By 2007 our football became more expansive and we were mostly decent to watch for the following 3 seasons while being high in the table and having some cup runs. In there somewhere, he wanted to go to another level. The signing of Fellaini demonstrated that. He clearly hoped to beef up our tiny midfield with a skilful and physically imposing general, a classy more dynamic player to fill the Lee Carsley role.
Bily was the next one to follow, a mercurial talent with a sweet left foot. He?s failed to succeed but we tend to be more critical because we have so little money and make so few signings that the microscope is more keenly trained on them and Davey. I know Spurs fans who forget who half their squad are and the odd expensive failure is not used as a stick to beat their manager with. I could say the same for our delightful neighbours and the likes of Villa or Arsenal.
Kenwright?s greatest moment was to bring in Davey. Since then he?s not been good enough. Yes, we have a great training ground and a good youth academy but Davey instigated much of those. Basically, Bill?s choice of the wild card has probably kept him in charge far longer than he should have been.
But it?s gone too far now. Kenwright needs to broker a deal and get out. We are going downhill in an increasingly competitive league. We will never be relegated under Davey. But if we lose him because of what Kenwright has let happen, we will go down within a season or two. We are clearly in the financial mire. But what is Kenwright doing to improve the situation? Nothing.
He?s failed to move grounds so we have an injection of income and he?s failed to find investment. Him going won?t change matters for the worse because we are already in trouble. But we need change and it doesn?t need to be a billionaire. We just need someone who has a business brain for the game and not someone who runs out of ideas once two-dimensional charm and attempting to put bums on seats has not worked.
Lastly, I am so angry with him because Davey and the likes of Jags and Baines have been loyal and are top class. He has abused that trust, their careers and the fans who follow this great club. Kenwright, time to go and sort out a way of taking your parasitical board members with you.
