A Truly Great Goodison Night

By Mark   Roberts  ::  07/06/2012   50 Comments (»Last) I would like to share my fading memory's of a truly great Goodison night that, thanks to my dad, I was fortunate enough to attend.

There is some black and white local news footage of the 1969-70 title clincher at home to West Bromwich Aalbion locked in a storeroom somewhere but it is very rarely shown.

My first game was a 2-1 defeat at home to Chelsea in April 69, also a night game that is engrained in my memory... but there I was, a year later, sat in the same Park End stand with my dad, ready to see us become Champions for the seventh time. The official attendance of 58,000 plus ? seemed a bit of a best guess, the place was absolutely rammed. Quite a few fans had climbed onto the roof of the boys pen for a better view and by kick-off time the atmosphere was absolutely electric.

My only memories of the match are of Alan Whittle slamming the first goal high into the Gwladys Street net and Colin Harvey cutting in from the left, skipping past a few tackles before shooting into the top corner of the Park End goal right in front of me. That was as good as it; the title was won, the singing, the noise, the celebrations, absolutely fantastic.

Once the final whistle had gone, there was a mass pitch invasion, mostly from the old Enclosure as fans moved forward to see the trophy presentation in the Directors Box above. I could be wrong on this but I think the trophy was left in the dressing room when the players eventually took a lap of honour due to the amount of fans on the pitch.

For me, a young lad of nine years, the importance of the occasion did not register until later in life. Little did I know at the time but it would be 15 long and painful years before I was to have that "Champions" feeling again.

Where any of you there that magical night ? It would be great to hear your memories.

The Bayern Munich night was awsome and is rightly offered up as the best of the Goodison nights but that WBA game in 1970 must rank alongside it.
