Carling Cup Fourth Round Preview

Everton and Chelsea meet for the second time in 10 days — and the for the fifth time in cup competition in three years — for a Carling Cup Fourth Round tie at Goodison Park that will see the winners into the last eight.

The two teams met each other in this tournament in early 2008 at the semi-final stage where Chelsea won out over two tightly-contested legs, prompting David Moyes to admit that despite all his patient work at Everton, there was a glass ceiling between his side and the monied elite above that he might never break through.

As if to confirm that, the Londoners beat the Blues in the FA Cup Final a year later and with Moyes not having spent real money on any incoming player for over two years, the gulf in recources between the two clubs is as wide as ever.

Nevertheless, despite the weak manner of Everton's defeat at Stamford Bridge the Saturday before last, Moyes's side have a decent record against Chelsea — they edged them on penalties in the FA Cup in West London last season — and they will have been buouyed by the 3-1 win at Fulham at the weekend that saw Royston Drenthe take full advantage of his first Premier League start.

The Dutchman scored a stunning opener inside three minutes and had a hand in the Blues' other two goals and with Moyes confirming in his pre-match press conference that he'll be choosing from the same squad for this one, Drenthe could well start his third match in Everton colours (his first came in the third round win over West Bromwich Albion.

Indeed, Moyes is expected to make very few changes to the team that started at Fulham. With the possible exception of swapping Apostolos Vellios for Louis Saha — the Frenchman scored the winner at Craven Cottage and has a decent record against Chelsea — the manager might be tempted to name an unchanged line-up, though he will also be mindful of the Premier League encounter with Manchester United looming on Saturday and he admitted to having a couple of slight injury worries following the Fulham win.

Chelsea, for their part, will be forced into making changes after their 1-0 defeat at QPR on Sunday. Jose Bosingwa and Didier Drogba are both suspended after picking up red cards at Loftus Road, while Ashley Cole also serves a suspension for bookings. Ramires is injured, Raul Meireles is cup-tied, but Fernando Torres is eligible again after serving a ban of his own.
