Season › 2011-12 › News Jagielka gets a starting slot Michael Kenrick , 12 November, 5comments | Jump to most recent Jack Rodwell debuts as second-half sub At Wembley, England kicked off with Phil Jagielka (alongside ex-Everton teammate Joleon Lescott) in defence against Spain, despite having a broken toe. Leighton Baines and debutant Jack Rodwell were part of a bench comprising 13 substitutes, with Jack Rodwell being the lucky one to get his first senior cap, coming on in the 57th minute and acquitting himself well in a rare England win over Spain 1-0. Rodwell's first contribution was an excellent run into space down the left and he got into a good crossing position but put his cross well behind and off-target. Jagielka got poleaxed by a dreadful aerial body-slam from Fabregas that should have been punished with a red card. Rodwell nearly forced an illegal backpass but was wrongly penalized for a no-existent push after he drove the ball too far ahead of him.
