South African back on loan; Saha's surprise Spurs switch

A busier than expected transfer deadline day has seen two players arrive and one leave from Goodison Park with the late-breaking news, confirmed by Everton around 11:45pm, that Steven Pienaar has been re-signed on a six-month loan.

Earlier, Nikica Jelavić completed his move to Everton after the Club confirmed earlier in the day that a deal, believed to be for £5.5m, had been agreed with Rangers.

The Croatian, who scored 30 goals in 45 appearances north of the Border after joining the Gers from Rapid Vienna, said that moving to Goodison fulfilled his dream to play in the Premier League.

That opened up a surprising switch to Tottenham for Louis Saha, whose Everton contract was due to expire this summer, and the Frenchman made the switch to White Hart Lane for an undisclosed, nominal fee.

Rumour into the evening had it that Steven Pienaar make his return to Everton but that seemed less likely when the South African was named among Spurs' substitutes for their game against Wigan.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp suggested in his post-match interview after his side's victory that Pienaar's departure was dependent on players arriving but even though Spurs failed to land a replacement, Pienaar's desperation for first-team football probably tipped the balance.

Meanwhile, rumours of a loan move for Adam Johnson from Manchester City for the remainder of the season were doing the rounds after a loan bid to sign Alessio Cerci from Fiorentina apparently fell through. Nothing came of that speculation.

And AEK Athens announced fairly early in the day that Kostas Manolas would not be joining the Blues after the player changed his mind on making a £500,000 move to Everton.
