25 years ago today...

It was 25 years ago today that Pat van den Hauwe scored the only goal at Carrow Road to clinch the 1987 Division One title for Everton, the Club's last League Championship to date.

Despite losing Gary Lineker to Barcelona after the 1986 World Cup, Howard Kendall managed to fashion a superb squad from a mixture of seasoned pros at the peak of their careers with versatile utility men and the 23 players he used that season topped the old Division One in convincing style.

The Blues won the title that year by a full nine points but it marked the end of Kendall's stunningly successful first spell in charge at Goodison Park.

The manager's departure to Athletic Bilboa marked the beginning of the break-up of that excellent side and the likes of Trevor Steven and Gary Stevens would follow him out of Goodison in search of European football after the ban on English clubs competing on the Continent following the Heysel tragedy. The link for this story is an interview with Trevor Steven, remembering that special time.
