Blues will face Bolton in 4th Round

, 15 January, 41comments  |  Jump to most recent
Everton will make the shorter trip to the Reebok Stadium for their FA Cup Fourth Round tie after Bolton Wanderers beat Sunderland 2-0 in this evening's Third Round replay at the Stadium of Light.

Martin O'Neill's side appeared to have gained the upper hand in the tie by bringing it to the northeast for the replay following the 1-1 draw in the first game but succumbed to the Championship outfit on their own turf.

The Blues will face the Trotters on Saturday 26th January with kick off at 3pm.

Crikey!
Some of these premier league teams are going like busteds.
Aston Villa and Sunderland not only losing to lower league teams but getting played off the park.

Prime candidate for a TV game as the cameras will be hoping for a shock result

Let's field a full strength team and disappoint them.

COYB!

TV games have already been picked (usual suspects). It's definitely 3 p.m. on the Saturday as it says above and hopefully it will be a full house and a great cup-tie atmosphere.

I had a look at Bolton's line-up, and they've kept hold of most of their players from last season, so it's a reasonably talented team. No idea why they're doing so badly in the Championship. Still, I'd rather play them than Sunderland.

I'm glad it's Bolton for three reasons. It's easy to get to, Sunderland have to beat us sometime and we owe Bolton one for when they beat us 3-2 in the FA Cup after we'd been 2-0 up back in the days when we were lumbered with Mike Walker in the Goodison hot-seat.

Definitely winnable but who knows.

Brian (060)-
It hasn't been very fantastic--mostly splitting the season series for the past few seasons. Last time we faced Bolton was at home, where Tim Howard scored that insane goal in the wind, but still lost 1-2.

We haven't played Bolton too often in the FA Cup in recent years, there's the one that Ste refers to and if i'm correct the Semi-Final in 1953 are all that I can think of, although we have won FA Cup Semi-Finals at the old Burnden Park. I thought the original fixture between Bolton and Sunderland ended 2-2 after Bolton led 2-0.

Scott Bosworth, you get the award for best ever adjectival phrase. "Very fantastic". The only other time I've heard it used was about six years ago when Nathan Sharpe of the Wallabies described a win over the All Blacks as "very fantastic", and the commentators knew that they'd heard something special then. Well done, mate.

You're right too, I think our results have usually been split win-win with Bolton over past few years. That said, you'd be backing us all day as they have just as much to play for in their league as we do in ours. I think what will tip us over them the most is it being at the Reebok (are they still calling it that?), where we will be a bit more liberal in our play.

I can't get to the match these days... Wee bit doddery. Got SKY and ESPN but can never get VIP box or other live stream. All I have is a netbook with a cable to the telly. Am I missing a gadget? Is it this dingle or dongle I often hear mentioned.

My namesake tore Bolton apart 1953... COYB.

Think I'd have preferred Sunderland actually. If we have a our first team playing their best they should take it.

In that 1953 semi we were 4-0 down at half time having missed a pen. Played them off the park in second half but still lost 3-4. Could have been us though in that "Matthews Final" The first televised game I saw.

It's not a given but surely this is an easier game than if we had got Sunderland. As Ste (#71) says, Sunderland are due a win against us at some time. Although we have by far a better team, I could see O'Neil getting them to believe it's their cup final; a good result.

Blackpool were 3 - 1 down in that final and came back to win 4 - 3!! what a spectacle that must have been in front of 100,000 people, Mortenson scoring a hat-trick! I was only a 1 year old so I didn't know too much, never had a telly anyway back then in Kirkdale!

Great news about the draw though — much better for the traveling fans and I am confident we can play them off the park as long as we get our first team fit.

Harold - no, you don't need a dingle or a dongle (as you put it). In fact, don't download anything as it's likely to mess up your computer.

I think you might need something more than a netbook (ie, a laptop of desktop PC) to stream live football but I'm not certain. I'm sure there are other Toffeewebbers with more technical expertise than me on this subject.

Come on, guys, it's "Help Harold Week"!

A really memorable game for me was when we played them sometime in the 50s I think and at half time we were 4 - 0 down but eventually lost 4 - 3 and they were really hanging on at the end.

The Blackpool win against them was dubbed the 'Matthews final' as he took them apart.

Yes Richard, John Willie Parker scored two and Farrell scored with a free kick.
Clinton even missed a penalty.

I think we were still in the 2nd division at the time.

Kev, a dongle is just like a USB stick you insert into a PC/laptop (I don't know about netbook) to obtain broadband, supplied by various companies like T-Mobile and 3 etc.

Harold, on my laptop I get live streaming via FirstRowSports.com, it's not bad. At first it was terrible because of pop-ups, bloody adverts non-stop! My son got rid of the pop-ups and it's ok.

Get someone you know to advise you if at all possible. I would help you myself only I live in London! (Unless of course you do!) All the best, Harold, COYB!

Kev Johnson

Oh, OK Danny. Thought a dingle/dongle was the same as a thingymyjig!

I've never heard of it. My PC and my daughter's laptop have broadband without a dongle, but I guess that's because we already pay for broadband from BT?

The answer, Harold, may be to try and buy a cheap laptop, if you can. Or get a second hand one from someone you know who's upgrading and no longer needs their old one.

Oh Kev, I think you mean Mary Dongle from the Dingle, she was quite well known in the late 60's. The things that woman could do with a bike pump, fish slice and a ping pong ball defied belief, and all for 15 shillings a pop ! She called it her "Holey Trinity" special 10% discount for blues.

Fantastic news this. Despite Sunderland's form this season, in view of their players, and home advantage, it would have been a tough tie. Bolton is certainly a more favorable prospect. Big four games coming up for us... all distinctly winnable, and hopefully we will see the re-emergence of Mirallas, and potentially a loan signing, during them.

February 2010, the boots worn by Matthews in the match were auctioned at Bonhams in Chester for £38,400, to an undisclosed buyer.

Wasn't you by any chance, Harold?

Speaking of which, Jim, has anyone any update on Mirallas's or Gibson's injuries, or any idea when they may be fit?
Steavey Buckley
31 Posted 16/01/2013 at 14:18:36
It has been reported that Mirallas won't be risked next Monday against Southampton as he has just returned to first team training. As for Gibson, he was injured on the 26 December with a likelihood of returning to first team training by the 23 January, who is reported to be needing an operation on his thigh in the close season.

The FA Cup maybe Everton's only hope this season for any fortune if they lose their way for 4th spot. Although the Europa Cup is just a glorified avenue to give players on the fringe first team action if Everton win the cup/runners up or have to settle for 5th/6th spot.

Great memories of the old Bolton ground – Burnden Park. Semi-final against Man Utd 1966. What an occasion that was.

However, the Reebock hasn't been too bad either and I too prefer Bolton as we knocked out the Black Cats last year at the Stadium of Light. Wouldn't have wanted them to have had a chance of revenge.

Good to hear Kev is back in training. Hopefully he will be 100% when he comes back and with a bang.

I remember that Howard goal last time! lol. Let's get it done proper next round at the Reebok Stadium.

Europa League is also an attraction, a magnet for players looking for good clubs, that can go after Champions League places next season.

My first ever away game was Bolton away in the 77 League Cup semi; couldn't wait for school to end and hit the road. Jeez there must have been 12/13,000 blues there in the 50,000+ crowd on a stinking February night.

First leg was a 1 - 1 draw at The Old Lady: 54,000, magic Dunc McKenzie with an impish goal.

EFC v Bolton 2nd leg: Dave Lawson, Ken McNaught, Mick Lyons, Dave Jones, Bryan Hamilton, Mick Bernard, Oh Andy is our King, Ronnie Goodlass, Mart Dobson the Rolls Royce, Bobby Latchford walks on water, we all agree Duncan McKenzie is magic.

Big Bob Latch, inevitably, 1 - 0. I remember nicking a burger and feeling dangerous and primed.

Brought down to earth, sadly, at Old Trafford 13 April 1977, 3 - 2, what a game, no Mckenzie, Pearson, jeez. And 10 days later, hitch-hiked on the back of an open truck and felt so 1977 cool, fucking Clive Thomas.

Good days and times.

I always prefer to remember Sandy Brown for clearing one off the line in that 1966 semi final at Burnden Park than for his more infamous own goal. What a day out this 10 year old boy had, apart from a terrible crush outside the ground afterwards.
Sandy was a true Evertonian, who was unfortunate not to play in the final. Despite being dropped for a fit again Tommy Wright, I was told that because of his attitude at Wembley, carrying the kit, geeing up those who were playing, Sir John Moores presented him with a set of silver cutlery!

I was at our game at Bolton in about 1980, abandoned at half time due to heavy snow. Good job as we were 1-0 down at the time.

I remember Mick Lyons signalling to the bench that the ref was going to call it off just before the break.

The car was stuck in the snow too, it took hours to get home

Peter Reid (playing for them) got a very bad injury when he slid into our 'keeper, George Wood I think, but my memory's bloody awful! He was never the same player again (or so everyone thought) and picked up a succession of injuries thereafter. Then he signed for us for a mere £60k and suddenly did look like the world beater he had promised to be, I loved Reidy and that great team we had in the mid eighties.

What a snip!!

It is one of those annoying things that Sandy is always remembered for that bloody own goal.....and that it is one of the few clips that the BBC has of us in the 1969-70 season. Reminds me of the punch line of that gag about the Welsh builder / shipbuilder / farmer who bemoans..." But you shag one sheep !!! "
As my befuddled brain recalls he played a major role that season, especially in the run in as did Alan Whittle of course and Tommy Jackson. I think the Holy Trinity only played together half a dozen times that season
Now, where's me tablets ?

New Years Day 1979, Derek Williams. Was 1-1, Trevor Ross had equalised their goal with a penalty.

The weather ruined our Title hoopes that season. Our games always seemed to go ahead on snowbound pitches during the so called Winter of Discontent when every bugger went on strike it seemed, and everybody else's were called off.

We lost in the snow at Wolves, Southampton, Sunderland in the Cup, lost our momentum and slipped from 2nd on Liverpool's coat tails to 4th and the season petered out as the others won their postponed matches. And to cap it all, Thatcher won the General Election in the final week of the season and we all know what harm that did to Merseyside.

It was a scary journey home that New Year's Day. When every other car on the East Lancs was sticking to the wheel tracks of the vehicle in front, my dear old Dad decided to create tracks of his own, meaning we spent a lot of time broadsides on.

Nearly as frightening as returning from the League Cup semi final victory at the same ground in 77 when we picked up a hitch-hiker at Westhoughton who quickly convinced us he was the Yorkshire Ripper.

At least I was only one year out – even if I did have the scoreline wrong.
