With speculation over his future a daily feature of the sport media at the moment, the Belgian midfielder's absence from the team sheet inevitably set tongues wagging but Everton confirmed that he was unable to play due to an infection in a cut to his lower leg. After the game, Roberto Martinez told reporters that Fellaini would likely have played had it been a competitive league or cup game but he was rested today as a precaution with the Premier League kick off just six days away. He also explained that Darron Gibson suffered a "grade one ligament problem" that will be assessed over the next couple of days. The Irishman was withdrawn just before half time of today's match. Fellaini has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, with newspaper reports claiming the David Moyes was preparing an offer for both the he and Leighton Baines. Thus far, Everton have received just one offer for Baines and nothing concrete for Fellaini but it remains to be seen whether either player can be prised away before the transfer window closes on 2nd September.
