Martinez keen to stay unbeaten

Roberto Martinez is keen to extend his team's "beautiful" unbeaten Premier League record — with Everton the only side in the top flight who can claim that honour just five games into the new season.

Liverpool's defeat to Southampton last weekend left the Blues as the only team yet to taste defeat in the League and the manager will be looking to extend that record on Monday with a home game against Newcastle United.

"It is a fantastic label to have but it is something we will have to work really hard to extend," Martinez said.

"It is a beautiful label to have but in September you don't win anything. What we need to do is work harder because it is only beautiful if you can keep it until May because otherwise one day it will become a negative."

Everton had to wait for their first victory of the season after being held to three consecutive draws to start the campaign, dropped points that have prevented them from joining the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal in the lofty heights at the top of the table.

Martinez knows, though, that his side played well enough to win those first three games.

"It is fair to say that we felt hard done by with only getting three points from our first three games. But back to back wins from two difficult games is great and also the manner in which we have done it.

"I don't think we have been exceptional in terms of what we have been doing on the ball but we have defended extremely well, restricted West Ham to very, very little and when we went behind, managed to come back from behind twice which shows you the mentality, character and strength in the squad."

Though the Blues lost in the League Cup at Fulham on Tuesday evening, Martinez's much-changed side played well enough to have won and the Spaniard took heart from the overall performance and what it says about the depth of his squad:

"We have many options in the squad, nobody can take their place for granted and that is very exciting moving forward."
