Roberto proud to be Everton manager

Press preoccupied with Liverpool 'snub'

In derby week, what sounds like a good story — Roberto Martinez 'snubs' move to Liverpool — really has very little meat. 18 months ago he decided to stay with Wigan... and then he became the Everton manager.

No doubt responding to repeated journalists questioning, Martinez said “It's been a question asked many times,” regarding the discussions he held with Liverpool owner John Henry in Miami 18 months ago. Martinez declined the Liverpool job before Brendan Rodgers, who followed him at Swansea after Paulo Sousa, was appointed.

“Things in life happen for a reason and it was well documented that summer. It was a time of trying to find out what was next from my point of view and Wigan Athletic at that time.

“Everything ended up that it wasn't the right time or the right move. I always believe everything in football and life happens for a reason and I am extremely proud and honoured to be manager of Everton."
