Season › 2013-14 › News McCarthy: Chase for the top four is touch-and-go Lyndon Lloyd , 8 February, 0comments | Jump to most recent James McCarthy says that Everton aren't making any predictions of making the Champions League this season, saying that the manager and players are just looking to pick up as many points as they can. The Irish international acknowledges, though, that a win at Tottenham would keep the Blues right in the mix for a top-four finish, a prospect that was dented by defeat in the Merseyside derby and Liverpool's demolition of high-flying Arsenal this weekend. Indeed, McCarthy admits that Roberto Martinez made his feelings known in no uncertain terms after the debacle at Anfield: "He said his piece after the game and made us all aware how upset he was. But we all knew how much we had let the club down. “We had a meeting the next morning and wanted to address it. The boss told us what was right and wrong and he asked the boys to speak up and they did. We weren't happy as a team and as individuals. "We wanted to make up for it in the next game against Villa and we did. "The gaffer is always calm in front of the media but now and again, he'll lose it with us if he's not happy. It's never nice to be on the receiving end of a big defeat but thankfully we made amends. "If we can win at Spurs the gap is only two points," the 23 year-old continues, "so it's tight, touch and go. "Liverpool are ahead of us and we want to try to get in front of them but it is a tough league. We're not saying we're going to get Champions League or this and that — we want to do as well as we can. "There is still a long way to go, work to be done and there is too much experience within this squad for us to get carried away. Quotes sourced from The Guardian About these ads © ToffeeWeb
