Traore loan spell in the balance

Everton expect to find out this week which treatment option Monaco will select for Lacina Traore, a decision which will determine whether he remains on loan with the Blues or returns to the French club early.

Roberto Martinez explained in his press conference this morning that the Ivorian striker could be out for as long as three months.

In that case, the six-month loan deal that Everton agreed with Monaco in January would effectively be over, with Traore having made just one appearance.

"We're going to find out over the next couple of days about the treatment route that we're going to go down," Martinez told reporters.

"The relationship with Monaco is very, very good, and you get to a point where you want the best for the player.

"We need to make sure that he gets the right treatment. It depends on how long that's going to be. If it's only a matter of three or four weeks, clearly we want Lacina to be here until the end.

"If it's going to be anything longer than two or three months, then clearly the loan period is over."

Traore damaged his hamstring in the warm-up at Stamford Bridge last Saturday before the Premier League match at Chelsea and there is a possibility that he will need to undergo surgery.

It's a further blow to the 6' 8" player who arrived at Goodison with a hamstring strain in his other leg and had to wait until a fortnight ago to make his Everton debut against Swansea City in the FA Cup when he scored inside four minutes.

"Surgery can only be the resort if it's the right resort. That's something that at the moment, with Monaco, we're exploring."
