Pity I’m on holiday when Ossie has his testimonial. Otherwise, I’d have well gone. I’m not always been his biggest fan but, by god, what a servant he’s been. It’s a pity Martinez never took over a few seasons back; then I really think we’d have seen the best of him.

Moyes shunted him around the midfield but didn’t seem to know his best position. That said, he did get international recognition under the miserable bastard so he done something right. Hope it’s a good day for him because he seems one of the game’s good guys.,

It’s nothing personal on Leon, but I’m not in favour of testimonials, average modern prem footballers earn absolute mega money compared to the very best of the pre Prem players.

They don’t need this nest egg, a sentiment of yesteryear is being applied from players who earned a couple of thousand a year and needed this nest egg when they retired.

Anyway there’s my grumble for the day.

The money goes to charity these days, Robert.

Robert, I think you'll find that all the proceeds will be going to charity, as they do from most Testimonials.

@Robert, I doubt Ossie will be taking money from the game; they usually donate the proceeds to charity these days so I will be surprised if this wasn't the case.

Ray & Paul,

Okay fair enough thanks for the info.

I seem to recall Niall Quinn at Sunderland doing this?

Well done Ossie! You’re doing a very good thing and now there’s at least two of you in the modern game, who’ve done the decent thing.

They all do it to be fair, Robert.

A nice gesture.

This is Ossie's quotation from the Echo, seems fair enough for me:

"There are two charities who are involved with my testimonial year," he added. "They are Make A Wish – which provides a wish for terminally ill children and their families – and Claire House, which is an important local charity.

"They are charities I am well aware of and have been connected to during my life, so to be able to help them and give a little back is something I'm pleased about."

ToffeeWeb clearly doesn't like copy and paste speech marks, sorry about that.

Testimonial matches per se belong to the past but highlighting and celebrating a loyal servant's contribution to the club while playing a pre-season match where all the money goes to charity seems like a very worthwhile exercise.

However, I'd like to know though where the rest of the pre-season games have gone. Tranmere away, Leicester in Bangkok and Porto at Goodison does not seem like an ideal way to prepare for the new season. Where are the other matches against top class opposition that prepare the team's mental sharpness? Pre-season this year looks distinctly underwhelming.
