Everton assigned pot 3 for Europa League draw

, 28 August, 94comments  |  Jump to most recent
Everton will be in the third tier of seeded teams for tomorrow's Europa League group stage draw.

The Blues needed a number of upsets of clubs ranked with higher Uefa team co-efficients in order to move into Pot 2 but fell one result short leaving Everton as the highest ranked team in Pot 3.

The draw will take place in Monaco at 12pm UK time and there are a number of potential reunions — not to mention opportunities to settle some old scores — on the cards depending on how the balls are drawn, with Villarreal and Fiorentina in Pot 1 and Metalist Kharkiv in Pot 2 alongside Celtic.

Pot 2 also contains some tough opposition that the Blues would likely wish to avoid at this early stage, including Wolfsburg and Standard Liege, while Pot 4 has some potentially tricky away trips like Dinamo Moscow and Dinamo Minsk.

I have nothing against Villarreal, only against that bald bent coot and whoever at Uefa rigged the draw.

WeÂ’ll end up with Villarreal, Wolfsburg and Inter, because itÂ’s Everton and Uefa still hate us for wanting to stop the Kopites qualifying after they stole the Champions League. Special rules allowing two Pot 1 teams in one group if the Pot 3 Team dared to challenge the rules Uefa had written but wanted to change because it impacted a Sky Club!

If that centre-half hadn't saved two penalties in the shootout for the Bulgarians, we'd have been in pot 2! Unlucky or what?

Having said that, our neighbours proved today that you can get an easier group from pot 3 than some teams, e.g. Man City, get from pot 2. I somehow think that we won't get the same good fortune.

I agree NICK 1 that ref defo was bent I could not believe the decisions he made , I do admire Villarreal the way they play possession football just like we do now and remind me of Everton as a club in many ways, think we should have a good run in Europe as we have players that can snatch a goal from nothing excited can't wait.

Hahha... good luck, Iakovos matey.

Looks some handy teams in the Europa League this season. It seems strange how Uefa do these pot things, we finish above Spurs so do not have to go through qualifying rounds but still end up two pots below them. The EPL Champions then go into Pot 2 in the Champs League and 4th-place Arsenal in Pot 1, along with 3rd-place Chelsea.

Oh by the way how typical of the Redshite they end up with a piss easy draw!

Do the third place teams in the Champions League drop into the knockout rounds still?

That's the single stupidest thing I've ever seen. It completely devalues the Europa League in my opinion. Get knocked out? Here, go down here in the later stages of this bastardized competition.

I love the Europa League and can't wait for it. I just wish they'd ditch the "relegation reward" for the 3rd place Champions League teams. If they're still doing that they need to have a hard look at it.

Inane.

So is there any real truth in these conspiracy theories or just paranoia. If this new Everton team is good enough how far can they go. Already the views are split, we can do it, to we are going to be screwed over. I need more info as I was living in Australia last time we where in Europe and had no access to any news on Everton.

18 Posted 29/08/2014 at 07:35:45
The way the pots and rankings are worked out is UEFA take the last 5 years of European football experience for that club. Because we don't have any, UEFA use how EPL teams have faired in the competition for the last 5 years instead. But that's why Spurs are ahead in the rankings system.

Spurs are Pot 1 while Everton are bloody Pot 3??

What have Spurs done in Europe to get into Pot 1? They had a brief run in the Champions League under Harry but I still don't see why they are Pot 1 and we can only scrape into Pot 3?

We'll draw Villareal. I think we all know it.

The pots are decided on the club's European co-efficient. Which is determined by Euro/Champions performance over the last 5 years, if you don't compete in Europe you still get points depending on your league standing, and the quality of the league, but obviously this is less than if you had competed.

Since the last time we were in Europe was 09/10 I think we're lucky to be in pot 3.

Andy Meighan

Phil 5 of course of course we won’t get the same fortune as THEM! We’re Everton, aren’t we?We’ll get the same kind of draw as Man City or something similar Here’s an idea for them – why not just put the shite straight into the final and see how they fare in a penalty shootout just a thought like

Mark, this time round I think its ITV with the Europa rights. With any luck we may get some ITV4 airtime, but Spurs will probably get the nod. Luckily Arsenal went through or we may not have even got on the highlights.

So we finished above Tottenham in the Premier League and yet the are Pot 1 and we are Pot 3?

Both Tottenham and Hull were forced to qualify for this competition (Hull failed) while Everton were given automatic entry. Tottenham go straight into Pot 1 even though they had to qualify while Everton, with their automatic entry go into Pot 3?

Seems wrong to me.

Peter, I don't know the rules, but looking at the maths they are 8 teams short for the first knockout round without the CL rejects. 48 teams is 12 groups of 4 and top 2 means 24 clubs in the knockout round.
Tony Waring
36 Posted 29/08/2014 at 10:04:54
Still in the dark as to the draw format. Does EUFA draw 3 sets of 4 teams from the one group or 1 team from each Pot to make 12 mini groups ? If the former applies Pot 3 doesn't look too forbidding. Then again anything which favours Everton will almost certainly be over-ruled by EUFA !!
Mike Childs
37 Posted 29/08/2014 at 10:11:17
Not sure who to include in it because my overall European knowledge/history is weak. I may not be able to pick out the teams from the different pots but I'm certain that we will end up in the group that will be referred to as the group of death.
James Morgan
38 Posted 29/08/2014 at 10:14:53
Just think the the other teams will be writing on their respective websites "...pot 3 has a potentially very tough opponent in Everton, having smashed their transfer record on 28m pound signing Romelu Lukaku, not to mention the addition of three times Champions League winner Samuel Eto'o, following their fifth placed finish last season."
That's how I like to look at it!
Phil Guyers
39 Posted 29/08/2014 at 10:17:01

What makes you think that? The last 32 is made up of the 24 qualifiers from the group stage and 8 Champions League 3rd place dropouts as it has been since the Europa League format was adopted.

Mike Allison
40 Posted 29/08/2014 at 10:22:26
Tony there will be twelve groups of four, with one team from each pot in each group.

Hence we will play against one of the teams in pot 1 (but not Tottenham) one of the teams in pot 3 and one of the teams in pot 4.

So we could for example have Inter Milan (pot 1), Celtic (pot 2) and Dynamo Moscow (pot 4) as our group. Or we could have Salzburg, Dnipro and Qarabag.

Derek Knox
41 Posted 29/08/2014 at 10:20:51
Mike#37

They are all potentially the 'group of death', no matter who we get drawn against, if complacency sets in and we field an inexperienced side.

Remember, that all the participants have finished as runners up in their respective leagues, just falling short of CL qualification. So basically there are no mugs, but having said that, some countries' standards are not as high as Prem, La Liga, Serie A etc. hence the complacency comment.

Also a lot of these lesser known teams are relatively unknown quantities, and are easily capable ' on the night ' of turning anyone over.

Hoping to get to an away game again, the last one was Nuremburg. Of possible teams to be drawn against that would be a good away day I'd take any of the below:

Spain:

-Villareal

Germany
-Wolfsburg
-Munich

Belgium
-Liege
-Brugge
-Lokeren(Ghent)

Holland
-Eindhoven

France
-Lille

Czech

Slovakia

I think the BBC's description is appropriate when it says the Everton handed tough European draw; it could have been worse but it could have been so much better. The good thing about playing these teams is that the players will learn a great deal about themselves and hopefully will rise to the occasion and secure enough points to keep our interest in the competition into the new year.

The Russian side could be problematic though as the relations between East and West are deteriorating rapidly.

Ridiculous draw really considering what they got yesterday being in pot 3 as well. If we win all the home games then a couple of draws or a win away should suffice.

Take your points about the Russian game, but would imagine that if it is any where near a trouble spot, the game will either be played elsewhere (taking their home advantage away to a degree) or in exrtremes, for us to be handed a bye.
