This interesting piece by Mike Goodman of ESPN off-shoot, Grantland, takes a statistical look at the reasons why Tim Howard's shots-to-save ratio is so abysmal this season, widening the scope to focus on a less effective defensive midfield in the absence of James McCarthy and in the face of Gareth Barry's poor form.

So until the day he was injured "45% of all shots he faced ended up in the back of the net". I thought shot-stopping was his forte.

Tim has been great for us but after his exceptional World Cup performance maybe a bit of California DreaminÂ’ has crept in. Against West Ham Robles started to look confident and commanding. Mmmmm.

Even more interesting in the piece are the statistics leading to the question "whoÂ’s patrolling the area outside the Everton box"?
