If you should ever despair about the heart of Britain or the strength of human nature, take a trip to Everton. The future of our proud nation is safe in the hands of the vast majority of football fans who follow their teams up and down the country or simply welcome kindred spirits to their home turf. Football is not about FIFA, huge salaries or ego; but rather the real people who give so much to their sport and expect so little. Do not despair for a heart beats loud and proud in the darkest of places. The people of Liverpool can be sure that their enduring legacy is their fabulous people. » Read the full article at Liverpool Echo Reader Comments (5) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. I just hope the people of Sunderland see their team get out of the relegation mire. A proud old club and a proud old town. Good luck. Anthony Dwyer 3 Posted 03/11/2015 at 00:43:23 Brilliant to read, and fills me full of pride to be a blue. I'd also like to pay them one back. Their team were pretty awful to say the least but they supported them as well as I've seen any side supported through a game at Goodison, ever. Also in the fourth minute tribute to Howard, not only did the behave but they went the whole hog. Each fan stood and applauded, then joined in with the blues in singing "There's only one Howard Kendall. Fantastic fans. Karl Masters 4 Posted 03/11/2015 at 18:24:51 I was also very impressed by their fans' reaction to the Howard Kendall tribute. True, he was from Durham, like a lot of their fans, but they still showed they have a good knowledge of and respect for another team's history by applauding and many of them joining in with the 'one Howard Kendall' chant. Hope they survive. Ray Robinson 5 Posted 03/11/2015 at 18:33:06 The Mackems are proper supporters. Passionate and enthusiastic (although God knows how), they have no glory-seeking hangers on. I know a couple of Sunderland fans and they're both fine human beings. It's a proper football club, like ours.Once when I went with my son to Stadium of Light on New Year's Eve, without tickets, the steward at the away end just gave my son a free ticket. A small loss of income for the club but a huge gesture and warmly appreciated.I hope they stay up. Ray Robinson 6 Posted 03/11/2015 at 18:34:31 I should add that the Man Utd supporters were also superb during the minute's applause for Howard in the previous league match.
