U21s defeat Blackburn in Cup Quarterfinal

Everton Under-21s defeated Blackburn Rovers 2-1 in their Lancashire Senior Cup Quarter-Final today. Uruguayan striker Leandro Rodriguez started for the Blues but it was his sub, Courtney Duffus who equalized after coming on, and David Henen put the Blues ahead.

There was no score at the break, with Ryan Ledson and Harry Charsley having come close.

Blackburn took the lead but Unsworth made a couple of telling changes: Courtney Duffus came on for Rodriguez, while Dyson replaced Evans. Duffus scored with his first touch to level the score.

With less than 10 minutes to go, JonJoe Kenny brilliantly picked out Henen and the Belgian took one touch before slotting past the keeper to give Everton a 2-1 lead.

Does anyone have any idea where Rodriquez has been the last 3 months? This was his 2nd appearance only for the U21's since he joined in July/August.

Mike. A bit skinny when he arrived, I suspect he has been working on physical strength stuff in the gym. He certainly looked stronger the other day. "Very intelligent and a good finisher", according to Unsy after our boy scored his first goal at Goodison. "We'll try to gradually bring him up to speed".

Not sure I like Leandro playing with 16- and 17-year-olds but have to trust the coaches know what they're doing. Martinez has already stated that the lad has had senior experience in Uruguay and wouldn't want him to lose the talents which caused us to buy him.

Actually, although this low shot inside the far post Goodison goal was top notch, it was his goal in the previous match which impressed me. Mainly because it reminded me of his River Plate goals where he anticipated the flight of the ball and accelerated to get on the end of it. Youngsters don't do that. In fact, there are plenty of seniors who don't do that. Our exception is Naismith of course. Short on technical ability but a quick thinker in the box.

Anyway Mike, it seems Leandro is on a fitness programme and we'll just have to see where it takes him.

Not sure what thread to post this on, so I thought this one will do, seeing as its about Everton in a cup game.

Anyway, 45 years ago tonight, I was sat in Goodison Park watching Everton play Borussia Monchengladbach in the European Cup, a game which would eventually lead to the first ever penalty shootout in a European game. Don't remember too much about the game, I was only eleven, at the time.

I remember Johnny Morrissey scoring at the Park End. Then the penalties. Sandy Brown scored our final penalty then Andy Rankin's great save which put us into the next round.

Least said about that the better, though.

And you've hardly missed a game since either, eh Rob. History maker pal. As a matter of interest, do you know roughly how many games you have been to?

Haven't got a clue, Keith. Even more frightening is the thought of how much it's cost the last twenty years or so. Don't want to know either.

Also speaking of youngsters, one of our Sales guys told me today his lad has 'signed' for Everton. He is 7 years old (his lad!), is from Stoke (they are season ticket holders there), and has had trials at Stoke, Burnley, Blackburn, Burnley, Everton, and Man Utd. Man Utd said they wanted him to play for their second tier U8s as he wasn't of the required standard. He actually enjoyed Everton the most, so came back to us, and was asked to play in an U8 game – last week I believe. It was against Man Utd, Everton won 9-4, and he scored 7 and made the other 2!!!

Man Utd were on the phone right after the game, and said their coach had been 'hasty'. The dad said he would discuss it with his son, and let them know.

He asked his son what he had to tell Man Utd, and his son said - honestly - "Tell them to fuck off, I'm staying with Everton!" His dad said he was laughing that much he couldn't bollock him for swearing.

Watch out for Bengy Johnston in the future. (I'm not sure of the spelling.)

Christ - you could have bought the club if you'd ring-fenced the money!! Blue Bob! Hehe...

Rob, thanks for the memory! I was at that game all those years ago. I remember it finished so late I missed my last train home. I lived in Wrexham then, so had to hitch-hike home from Birkenhead. Well worth it at the time.

So the future looks good. Well done blue boys. Loved reading the other posts & the salesman son story was great.

I was there too Rob. Sad, and rather chastening, to think that two of our penalty takers are now in that all-time great team in the sky, whilst Sandy will surely be granted a place on the bench.

Wow, wow, wow! Who's getting closer to a trophy! If Everton win they should make a bus parade and a huge party! Everton didn't win any meaningful competition since Liverpool Senior Cup in 2007.

Good story, Keith, but to think a seven-year-old boy has had trials with six professional clubs is pure madness, especially with so many hasty coaches knocking around!

Tony (#11), I live down south and my son plays for a local club. A boy in his year (U8s this year) has been on the books of 3 clubs for the last 2 years now, Reading, QPR and Chelsea (on whatever informal or formal basis they can be at that age) and is waiting to hear this year if Reading want to take him on their books.

He's a good player and should develop into a quasi Rooney one day as he has that determination about him. Whether he does or not is down to coaching, his personal development and the chances he gets.

True Tony. These kids are kicking a large ball around far too early and suffer wear and tear in their joints before they are fully developed.

It isn't a story Tony, it's true. I think they have a match lined up for half time at Goodison in the New year. And kids play with smaller sized balls, Harold, no double entendre intended mate. Kids of that age must live within a defined 1 hours transport form their home. Stoke is 50 mins according to his Dad. I don't know, I live in the North.

But he confirmed Finch Farm is superb, and our coach was the one kids relate to best. That's why he wants to stay with us.

Ognjen Mojovic (#10),

I must have forgotten all about that Liverpool Senior Cup triumph but if the mighty Blues do get their hands on a 'proper' trophy this season, there will indeed be a parade and one hell of a party, but we won't lull ourselves into a false sense of security and have the bus painted until the Referee blows for time in the game that clinches the silverware.

Keith 14, a good true story then? Everton, have been very clever, on where they have placed their training facilities. It's right off the motorway, and must be one of the reasons they get a lot of decent kids, from all over the north west.

Harold, if they are getting taught good habits, it can't be all bad, but talk about "stars in their eyes". It might be funny, but a seven year old kid, telling Man Utd to fuck off. It sounds like the kids head is already bigger than the ball to me!

Bill 12. A kid can train with as many clubs as he wants, until the age of eight, then they usually have to sign for a club to train with them.

If it wasn't such a big business, then I'm sure we would develop a lot more decent players in this country. but as the man from United said, it's all about now, hence so many hasty decisions.

Still don't like it. Age 10 my daughter was a champion 200 metre runner. One of the best in the country. Age 11 she was finished. OSD. Osgood-Schlatter Disease. An inflammation of the bone or cartilage at the top of the shinbone. It happens to many kids involved in running, twisting and jumping sports during their growth "spurt". The 2 year rapid growth period between ages 10-13 girls. 10-15 boys.

My girl is fine and fit but, 30 years later. the bone still sticks out.

Boys suffer more than girls and football is one of the main culprits.
