Baines and Besic play in U21s defeat

Leighton Baines and Muhamed Besic took another step on their respective roads to recovery as Everton's second string were beaten 3-2 by Porto in the Premier League International Cup.

The duo were joined by Tony Hibbert and Joel Robles in David Unsworth's team for the Blues latest fixture in the competition, with Baines playing the first half – in a midfield role this time – and Besic completing an hour.

Everton fell behind early and were 2-0 down after just 12 minutes thanks to strikes by Andre Silva and Claudio Ribeiro.

They battled to find their way back into the game and halved the deficit in spectacular fashion through Callum Connolly who swept home a brilliant first-time shot with a quarter of an hour to go.

Ismael Leon restored the visitors' two-goal advantage from the spot, however, and though substitute Harry Charsley would make it 3-2, the Blues couldn't find an equaliser.Tony Hibbert lasted until five minutes from time, before he was forced off with his log term knee injury.

The result means that Everton's hopes of progressing beyond the group stage rest on the Portuguese side beating Tottenham next month.

Everton U21s: Robles, Hibbert , Kenny (c), Holgate, Connolly, Dowell, Williams, Besic (65' Walsh), Baines (46' Charsley), Byrne, Duffus (41' Evans). Subs: Hewelt, Davies, Thorniley, T Duffus

Bains played 45 mins in midfield. Hibbert went off late on, injured.

Sounded like a decent run-out. Baines in miffield. Very interesting. Callum Connolly must have played leftback. Scored a beauty and has a good future, LB or midfield. Looking forward to seeing Besic again.

Baines has to play were Barry is playing now; we can’t drop Galloway, the lad’s done great for us so far this season.

What happened to the Rodriguez? He doesn't appear to have played for the U-21s for a while.

I forgot about Rodriguez, yeah where is he? And Henen, did he play or what?

Minik,

David Henen is at League One Fleetwood Town for a month-long loan spell.

Leandro Rodriguez was involved in the previous two Under-21 games. He came on as a sub at Southampton (October 26) at started at Middlesbrough (November 8).

Baines was tried in midfield and wasn’t that good. Barry was a decent left back and turned into a decent midfielder but even though he is aging I don’t think Bainsey would replace him.

Although Galloway has done well, I think his future would be more central and Baines still has more attacking prowess so I expect to see him back in his familiar role in the next game.

I can’t believe Hibbo injured his knee again. He must be in bits... That's surely his playing career well and truly over. Time to get the fishing rod out lad!

On the topic of injuries, any sign of Pienaar or have we all forgotten about him like we used to do with Gibson?
