Season › 2015-16 › News U21s wallop Widnes in Liverpool Senior Cup , 30 November, 14comments | Jump to most recent Everton Under-21s entered the Liverpool Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage tonight with an away tie at Widnes where they smashed in eight goals with no reply. The Blues' second string gave the competition a miss last season but, in need of matches to support the first team David Unsworth's team participated this time with a big statement. Sam Byrne, Antony Evans and Conor McAleny all scored goals, Callum Connolly grabbed a brace, while Calum Dyson fired a hat-trick to send Everton through to semi-finals. John Dean 3 Posted 30/11/2015 at 22:25:58 The young blues overwhelmed a poor Widnes side tonight. It was attack versus deference from start to finish. Everton were fully committed throughout the game and fought tenaciously to win and retain the ball; Widnes could not hold on to it at all. It was hard to assess our defence as they had little to defend but our midfield was superb. The inventive Walsh was everywhere and Davies had the best game I’ve seen him play. Connolly scored another screamer and would have had a hat-trick but he failed to score an uncontested header from 5 yards. Evans is already an important player for Jonjoe’s team. I think Davies is the grandson of Alan Whittle but I have only heard this off-hand. Their match reports are restricted to factual comments on teams and goalscorers with not much comment on the players and how they performed and Everton’s twitter feed is poor. Dowell has class but is not yet performing at his pre-injury level. John Dean 13 Posted 01/12/2015 at 18:39:44 The best defender is, I think, Matthew Pennington who is from the John Terry school of central defenders and I think he's good enough to play now, if needed. Liam Walsh plays like I remember Alan Ball playing and he's not far away from being ready and should make the bench this season. I don't think any of our young strikers are close yet but I think Evans will come through. But we all see different things when we watch our boys.
