Everton Under-21s entered the Liverpool Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage tonight with an away tie at Widnes where they smashed in eight goals with no reply.

The Blues' second string gave the competition a miss last season but, in need of matches to support the first team David Unsworth's team participated this time with a big statement.

Sam Byrne, Antony Evans and Conor McAleny all scored goals, Callum Connolly grabbed a brace, while Calum Dyson fired a hat-trick to send Everton through to semi-finals.

Everton U21s: Hewelt, Kenny {c}, Connolly, Walsh, Thorniley, Feeney, Dowell (Charsley 46'), Davies, Byrne (Donohue 46'), Evans, McAleny (Dyson 46')

Hewelt, Kenny (C), Connolly, Walsh, Thorniley, Feeney, Dowell, Davies, Byrne, Evans, McAleny

No Rodriquez , perhaps with 1st team for tomorrow

Goals from Byrne, Evans, McAleny, Connolly (2) & a hat-trick from Dyson (sub) secures Liverpool Senior Cup victory.

The young blues overwhelmed a poor Widnes side tonight. It was attack versus deference from start to finish. Everton were fully committed throughout the game and fought tenaciously to win and retain the ball; Widnes could not hold on to it at all. It was hard to assess our defence as they had little to defend but our midfield was superb.

The inventive Walsh was everywhere and Davies had the best game I’ve seen him play. Connolly scored another screamer and would have had a hat-trick but he failed to score an uncontested header from 5 yards. Evans is already an important player for Jonjoe’s team.

Excellent info, Mike and John. I was not finding anything.

I've been trying to do a more complete job of tracking the U21s and the U18s this season. Still a bit more work needed before I can post the player apps and goals for so far this season...

John (3) I like that term for the Widnes back-line, Deference! Something that could be levelled at our first team at times – ’After you, Claude’ as some former professional likes to say.

Thanks Mike and John, the youngsters are just as important as the seniors to me. I think Davies is the grandson of Alan Whittle but I have only heard this off-hand.

The young players are of keen interest to all supporters and I wish Everton’s official website was as good as the websites of many/most other clubs at reporting on their games.

Their match reports are restricted to factual comments on teams and goalscorers with not much comment on the players and how they performed and Everton’s twitter feed is poor.

To be the club we want to be, we should embrace all our teams and their performances.

Byrne, Dowell and McAleny all withdrawn at half time. That's a bit weird isn't it...unless they're in Martinez' plans for Tuesday...which I can't imagine is the case.

Thanks lads. The official site is a big letdown these days. Someone from the management or upstairs has decided to put a block on the academy stuff.

Byrne, Dowell and McAleny could probably all do a job at Championship level.

That said, we need to progress in the cup and there must be players like Mirallas, Osman, Naismith, Besic, Lennon and Gibson who are desperate for a runout.

And we really need to progress in that cup.

Not at all sure about the energetic Byrne and, sadly, McAleny hasn’t performed consistently during any of his loan contracts so I can’t see him as a Premier League player. Dowell has class but is not yet performing at his pre-injury level.

John Dean - Thanks for the report.

In your opinion, do any of our skilled youngsters look to have the physical size and athleticism to give the Prem a go?

The best defender is, I think, Matthew Pennington who is from the John Terry school of central defenders and I think he's good enough to play now, if needed. Liam Walsh plays like I remember Alan Ball playing and he's not far away from being ready and should make the bench this season. I don't think any of our young strikers are close yet but I think Evans will come through. But we all see different things when we watch our boys.

Apparently Rodriguez has been out injured but is back in training again.
