Late Duffus header sends U21s through to Lancs Senior Cup final

Everton's Under-21s beat Accrington Stanley 2-1 in this evening's semi-final of the Moors Coors Lancashire Senior Cup thanks to a headed goal by Courtney Duffus.

The match was played at the Merseyrail Community Stadium at Haig Avenue, home of Southport FC. David Unsworth's line-up included new recruit Matty Foulds in defence and a strike pairing of Sam Byrne and Antony Evans.

The Blues fell behind very early when Marcus Carver headed home after just three minutes but captain Joe Williams levelled the tie before the half-hour mark with a fine solo effort.

The match was still level heading into the final few minutes but substitute Duffus broke the deadlock with a header off Fould's cross to win it for Everton.

Everton:Gray, Kenny, Foulds, Pennington, Davies, Williams {c}, Connolly, Dowell, Evans (Charsley 53'), Byrne (Duffus 76'), McAleny.
Subs not used: Griffiths, Dyson, Feeney

Good luck to the lads. Here's hoping they do a great job tonight, reach the final and show the first team how to do it. A real chance for some silverware for the youngsters.

The team hasn't been announced yet but there will be some good players on view in Everton's side and several look likely to be playing in the top divisions e.g. Tom Davies, Calum Connolly, Jonjoe Kenny, Kieran Dowell, Joe Williams.

Yes John, I hope we don't have to plough through the mud again.

I think it will be hard enough without the mud as I see the Accrington Stanley website is expecting that most of their first teamers who didn’t play in their 3 - 1 home defeat of Hartlepool in League Division 2 last night will play tonight and their manager, a Redshite fan, wants to put one over us.

I'm disappointed not to be at the game tonight. After conceding an early headed goal, Joe Williams has just equalised after beating three men and finding the bottom corner with his shot.

Who’s playing in the other semi final? At the match – good game so far. We have had lots of possession and a well taken goal from Joe Williams after taking on three players. Hope for a win.

Courtney Duffus heads home a Matty Foulds cross to give Everton the lead late into the game.

John

Your efforts to get these games nearer the front page are greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Is it just me or is the U21s a very unsettled environment for player development. The team line up changes so frequently. I know this is partly due to loan players coming and going, but it still seems like there are wholesale changes from week to week with players vanishing and re-emerging.

What’s up with Holgate, Rodriguez, Browning... even Galloway?

Who do we play in the final?

Oldham are in the other semi-final and will play the winners of the 4th Round game between Man Utd and Blackpool but that’s not slated to be played until 24 February so the semi-final won’t be played until March.

Phil (#15). That’s why John is trying to get more coverage for the Under-21s so we can be up to speed at what’s happening.

I believe Holgate is presently injured, also Rodriguez... Browning is out for the season.

As some of the players you mention, Barry 18, are around the first team, its surprising that they don’t get a mention on the injuries section of the Everton website. We want all the players to feel part of the club and these guys got injured in the service of Everton so don’t they rate a mention.

It would also help us mere fans to understand why some players simply disappear for up to a season without trace. Recently, Matthew Pennington made a first team debut then fell off the radar then a couple of months later reappeared for the U21s and then for the first team. Obviously injured but you’d have to deduce that. These players are paid by the club and treated well by them; it seems that it's the website that can’t be bothered to do a full reporting job on the club’s players.

What do they do all day?

John (#19), I couldn’t have put it better myself. Some of these players please God, will be important players for Everton FC.

I personally thought JonJoe kenny would have been near the first team squad by now.

Keep up the good work, John.

Did Liam Walsh play for Yeovil in the replay v Carlisle in the cup last night? He played in the first game.

Barry 20. Yes, JonJoe looks like a good player with a good attitude and he was made captain of the U21s when he was barely 18, I think.

I was very impressed with Joe Williams attitude when I saw the highlights of last night's game. He scored a goal after some tenacious play to get past and around the defenders and then coolly drove the ball along the ground just like a striker would do. Then he ran to tell Accrington's mouthy No 9 to button it before getting set for the kick-off.

Dave 21. Yes Liam did play, being substituted in the first period of extra time; in his previous two games he lasted till 86 minute. He's also been booked in the last two games so he's not backing the challenges.

Thanks, John. I wouldn’t mind betting Liam got booked for mouthing off, he’s not backward in coming forward!!!!

Thanks lads. Appreciate the info. The Everton site is becoming more and more about selling stuff, resulting in the gradual disappearance of academy news.

Holgate injured? Don’t remember him being sent on loan...
