Carlisle United vs Everton

FA Cup Fourth Round
After the disappointment in the League Cup, Everton's road towards Wembley in the FA Cup continues with a trip to Carlisle United in the fourth round in the televised lunchtime kickoff.

If Wednesday's game against Manchester City was the most important game of Roberto Martinez's tenure at Goodison Park so far, today's game carries an importance all of its own. It's just the kind of banana skin that can trip up under-fire managers and there is no doubt that however safe the Catalan's job might be in the minds of Everton's hierarchy, defeat to the League Two side would ratchet up the pressure on his shoulders to an unprecedented degree.

Just as he did in the previous round against Dagenham & Redbridge, Martinez is expected to make changes, particularly in view of another midweek game coming up against Newcastle, but whichever side he puts out should be enough to take the Blues through to the fifth round.

The likes of Darron Gibson, Arouna Kone, Aaron Lennon and Brendan Galloway could figure as the manager attempts to rest some weary and jaded limbs. Joel Robles, it has been confirmed, will continue in goal.

Kick off: 1.30pm
Referee: Lee Mason

This game for me has a feel of double-edged sword about it... Always nice to be in the next round draw and have cup games to look forward to and I’m hoping that’s the case; however, if we lose, surely Martinez will be under a lot of pressure as now even the media are picking up on him being useless (Paul Merson yesterday) that the board will be forced into doing something.

No value in the 'straight win' market so have just invested a tenner with Victor for Blues to triumph 3-0. Should be the proverbial stroll in the park whatever team we put out.

I am expecting Carlisle to turn us over. Nick one from a corner and defend deep.

Anyone know what our injury situation is? I am thinking of Besic, and Mirallas mostly, as I think we miss them and in Mirallas, we have a game changer, if on his day!

I know we are playing Carlisle, but this could be a banana skin, especially with the lack of luck, and injuries, coupled with shit refereeing recently, and we can't treat this game with anything other than a serious approach.

Hopefully be in the hat for the next round!

Assume Besic is out for a while if his hamstring has gone again. A shame for him and us as he has barely got started and seems injury prone at this level.

Jon (5), I'm worried about Besic. He's a favourite of mine but, as we all know, recurrent hamstring injuries are a major problem and can be deadly to a football career. Let's just hope he can recover properly.

Constant injury has seen the likes of Hibbert, Baines, Pienaar, Gibson and Besic start less than 20 games between them this season, thus precluding 20% of the first team squad from selection for long periods.

This seems typical of what most Premier League clubs are suffering. Is the game more demanding these days?

Phil, apart from Besic those players mentioned are all over 30. I think the game is so much quicker today and when older players get injured they take a long time to recover unfortunately.

Surely if they lose today, Martinez will be sacked, how bad does it have to get?

Linda (#12), Darron Gibson is 28, not 29 till October.

2.5 goals or more with triple odds at 888.com – sounded exciting, until I worked out the max bet is a tenner and therefore max win about £15....

Anyway that £15 – and I reckon there will be more than 3 goals in most of the games we will play for the rest of the season!

Further to post 11, Brian Oviedo makes up a' Sicknote Six' so, by any criteria, injuries have not been kind to us this season.

(Thought I'd say it before Roberto gets on to it !)

Andy (#6)

It was absolutely ridiculous of Martinez to give Hibbert another 12 months contract. He has started 6 games in the last 4 seasons. It was obvious to everyone that he was never going to play.

I really do not want us to play around with the team too much today. If we go out, then our season is essentially finished. We have mid-table mediocrity to look forward too because we are too good to go down and too inefficient to take a top 7 finish. We need to win, and get some momentum going.

I’d like to see Pienaar involved from the start, and it would probably be sensible to give Lennon a start. It goes without saying that Robles should start in goal, and I’d give Oviedo the start above Baines. I

’d ’rest’ Stones probably too, but start with Lukaku. I’m not sure that we should risk McCarthy from the start yet.

No Lukaku in the team today.

Without a shadow of a doubt for me confirms that Lukaku has been injured since the SF 1st Leg....

And he has continued to play him running the risk of more serious injury.

Joe 22: Another example of gross incompetence by this poor excuse for a manager.

By the way, brother in law lives in Norwich, they are loving Naisy and his ''In you're face, 100 per cent attitude'', his words not mine.

Very dark thoughts about today. We have a team that cannot defend to save their lives. Forget the shit refs, its all Martinez fault. We have had the ’learning’ excuses and now ’its the refs fault’. Wonder what he’s going to say today.

I’ll willingly pay for his taxi fare. The best Everton squad for 25 years is being wasted.

The state of the pitch badly waterlogged by the floods could be a factor in the game and along with the Carlisle 'enthusiasm' to put us under the cosh could cost us both the game and more injuries, effectively ending our season.

Not only must we score first but also put in a 90 minute shift but, based on recent performances we all know that this is Everton and nothing is guaranteed.

Lee Mason as ref?

Up there with Atkinson, Twattenberk, Kevin Friend(less), Mike Jones and Lee Probert as being anti-Everton.

Expect a penalty against us today . . .

I would like to see Everton go strong today. Just win this game. Get safely into the next round. Get another favourable draw. And another Cup run is well under way.

We might be everybody’s second favourite team (although I question that) . People only tune into Everton because we concede so many goals. People tune in to see us get turned over. There was nothing entertaining watching Lukaku get nowhere near Man City’s goal , the other night. There is nothing entertaining seeing Everton throwing away 2 goal leads. There is nothing entertaining about sitting 12 the in the league.

As for today’s game, apart from Evertonians ,the whole world and his dog ,want to see Carlisle turn us over. That cannot be allowed to happen. We need to go at them from the start. Score early. Get 2 or 3 up. Control this game. And have a comfortable game. No injuries(hopefully). And just show our class. Our players need to turn up.

Sorry about Carlisle’s woes. Hope that they can get themselves sorted out. Hope that they reach their monetary target. But not at the expense of Everton. 3-0 or 4-0 to the Toffees. But I would not be surprised if we labour in this game, and maybe concede a goal. But I hope that we coast it. COYBs

I think all refs should be banned. None of them like us, it's so unfair. We'd be champions every year without out the lot of 'em.

Woe, woe and thrice woe, everyone's against us.
