Season › 2015-16 › News Argentina want Funes Mori for Rio 2016 , 12 April, 12comments | Jump to most recent Argentina's head coach, Gerardo Martino, says that he has spoken with Everton about playing Ramiro Funes Mori in the summer Olympics. Speaking on Radio Continental, Martino confirmed that the Blues defender is one of the players he is very keen to involve in Rio in August as well as the Copa Copa América in June. Coinciding with Euro2016, Funes Mori's participation in the Copa América would be less problematic than the Olympics which overlap the start of the 2016-17 Premier League season. “We are thinking about (Ramiro) Funes Mori for the [Olympic] Games. We have to see if Everton will allow this but we wish that he plays in the two competitions.” “We spoke with Roberto Martànez and it's a possibility.” Martinez was asked about the situation in a press conference this morning and he confirmed that he had had discussions with Martino. "[I haven't had an opportunity to speak with the player [about this]. I've had two conversations with Tata Martino," the Blues boss said, "and there is an interest in making Ramiro one of the over-23 players going to the Olympic Games. "So we need to find out a bit more and see where we are at the end of the season. Obviously, there is the Copa America as well so we'll have to see how things progress." Disclaimer Kim Vivian 1 Posted 12/04/2016 at 07:11:27 Well, at least he should be fit when he returns... as long as he can avoid injury. Ken Buckley 2 Posted 12/04/2016 at 09:06:39 So our present manager still with us next seaon then! Phil Walling 3 Posted 12/04/2016 at 10:10:03 Afraid so, Ken, but unless he improves on this season's appalling record, I don't think he will see it out mega millions contract or not.The big trouble is that whilst Kenwright continues to call the shots on the football front I'm sure that was in the partial sale deal he will see this season's 'two cup semis' as partial success. Although, having said that, the c £15M drop in 'points bonus' since 2013-14 may not appeal to the new 'half-owner'.But to start next season? Yes, lump on if you can find a market! Helen Mallon 4 Posted 12/04/2016 at 10:10:12 He needs to be here under our new coach, Jose Mourinho. Anthony Dwyer 5 Posted 12/04/2016 at 10:32:48 For Argentina to want Funes Mori to go to the Olympics shows just how good he is. He has proven to be a great signing by Martinez, something that Roberto should be given credit for. A lot of Roberto's signings seem to be good buys, all that we need now is one final good buy...... The Goodbye! Gerard Carey 6 Posted 12/04/2016 at 10:36:58 I still think (hope) that, if our last six or seven league games yield only a few points and poor displays, he will be gone in the summer. How long can it continue in a downward trend? No business can be run like that. The hope mentioned above is that Martinez will be gone sooner rather than later. Dennis Stevens 7 Posted 12/04/2016 at 10:59:25 Didn't Amokachi win an Olympic gold back in the day? Perhaps Funes Mori will become the second Everton player to win one. Liam Reilly 8 Posted 12/04/2016 at 12:18:18 Copa America and the Olympics. He'll get zero rest and would miss the start of the season; so it's got to be a NO. Tony Twist 9 Posted 12/04/2016 at 13:11:52 I think all this shows is Martinez is in charge now. It will only do us harm if we hold on to Martinez and I can't believe Kenwright has more say than our majority share holder on important decisions like sacking the manager. Geoff Risebrow 10 Posted 12/04/2016 at 14:53:39 How does that mean the clown will still be in charge next season? I believe he is dead man walking. It appears that the club are mistakenly waiting to see what happens in the FA Cup before they decide his future though. Being in the FA Cup Semi-Final is a irrelevance when it comes to deciding whether he should be sacked or not! The only things to consider are: is 14th good enough! Eric Myles 12 Posted 12/04/2016 at 16:36:36 It doesn't mean anything more than the Argentine manager has asked the Everton manager about the availability of a player. It won't affect whether Martinez will or won't be with us next season. Brian Porter 15 Posted 13/04/2016 at 06:13:45 It doesn't mean Martinez will be here next season. Obviously Argentina can only speak to the man in charge at this time and that is Martinez. As for Funes Mori, he is obviously highly rated by his country and we should be proud of his international achievements. Of course we should let him take this great opportunity and if we don't we may end up with another unhappy player and another transfer request. If we can't manage without him for a few weeks, we've not got quite the strength in depth Martinez continually brags about, have we?
