Favre claims he was considered by Everton

, 26 May, 83comments  |  Jump to most recent

Lucien Favre says that he was aware of interest from Everton but infers that he didn't want to wait for the club to make a decision while he had an offer on the table from Nice.

A tweet by Andreas Bà¶ni, the journalist from Favre's native Switzerland who first claimed that the former Borussia Mà¶nchengladbach boss was being considered by the Toffees, quotes him talking to Radio Tele Suisse Sport:

"I know that I was on Everton's shortlist, but I did not want to wait."

Favre, who resigned from Mà¶nchengladbach last year after a poor start to the season, was appointed as Nice's new manager on a three-year deal on Monday. Prior to that he was credited with turning the Bundesliga club's fortunes around in impressive fashion, leading them into the Champions League.

Everton, meanwhile, are in the process of interviewing candidates to replace Roberto Martinez and have not yet been in a position to make a decision.

Reports suggest that part of the reason is that they are waiting on the outcome of top target Ronald Koeman's contract negotiations with Southampton where he has 12 months left on his current deal.

Maybe he was on a list of managers who are out of work but to suggest he was on our shortlist I think is bollocks. He wouldnt get the job anyway and him taking the Nice job shows he knows it.

This is waffle

Sounds like he would have taken the job if offered it. Hope that Koeman's agent playing Everton against Southampton while Koeman takes his time on holiday doesn't mean we end up with an inferior manager when we could have Favre who would have done a good job I believe.

Yeah right, he must've been desperate to accept the fifty grand a year that Nice were offering rather than wait for a multi million pound deal with us.

The guy obviously knew that he was never going to get the job.

I'm confident that we will have the right man in charge by the 3rd June and very happy with the way EFC have gone about their business in this regard.

The shortlist he's talking about is probably quite a long list. I might even be on it....

If he'd wanted to come to us and thought he had a shot he'd have waited, he obviously didn't. I bet his new fanbase are chuffed though...

"there was this real looker that I heard quite fancied me but I needed something quick so I jumped in with you..."

Bob @ 4. I completely agree. It feels like a long wait because we are all desperate to know who the new manager will be; however, it's a massive decision and Mr Moshiri has to get it right. For what it's worth, I think he will and I'm pleased he is appearing to be thorough. In typical EFC fashion, the media and fans don't have a clue what's going on.

It looks to me like we are trying our best for Koeman and if that fails we have two free agents in Pellegrini and De Boer, probably in that order. It will never ever be Moyes, complete paper talk!!

Roll in the dawn of a new era; if Mr Moshiri gets this appointment right and announces a new stadium in the docks, the mood could be about to be lifted big time and we may finally be back. COYB

Some ridiculous comments on here from some people who I suspect know very little about Favre but love the gratuitous one liner.

I've been a big admirer watching him literally transform Borussia into a Champions League team. True enough, a poor start to last season made him walk... but there is undoubted quality here and the job he did at Borussia is exactly what we would like our next gaffer to do.

Nobody on this thread has any idea where Favre was on our list of candidates. He would have been a very good choice although he would not have been at the top of my list.

Astonishing isn't it?! He takes a decent job choosing not to hang around while the Everton governors make their minds up about a job he might not have got anyway and he is now erm 'desperate' grabbing apparently €50k (ridiculous) rather than our multi-million package.

Why insult the fella? He was on our radar, deserved to be on it, and now he no longer is. What a 'desperate' bastard who we didn't want anyway.

Who sounds 'desperate' here?

Typical Everton FC dithering we hear posters cry, however, Man U a far bigger and possibly more organised club than EFC are still negotiating aspects of the deal that will see Jose unveiled at OT. The appointment of a manager is not an easy task, although Everton made it look easy when they appointed Moyes and Martinez. I would think that at this particular juncture, getting the right manager for Everton FC is perhaps the most crucial appointment the current board are likely to have to make...ever. There are a vast number of reasons why nothing may have happened yet, agents, lawyers, the potential manager himself, clubs requirements.....just to name a few - patience is the order of the day and it seems to me the Journalists local or national aren't in the loop, which may prove to be a good thing in the long run.
What are Neil Warnock and Martin O'Neill doing at the moment oh and those two German coaches Klinsman and Loew?

Bob 4, 'You are very happy with the way Everton are going about this?' Surely you are in the minority then.

Candidates on the supposed list are dropping like fles; if we wait any longer, Kenwright is going to need a very long spoon with which to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get to the dregs of what's left.

I still say this mystery list is a smokescreen to hide behind the manager Bill wants... Moyes.

Thomas - from Wikipedia...

In 2015, Jorge Sampaoli led Chile to victory in the Copa America on home soil.

On 30 November, he was named on the final three-man shortlist for the 2015 FIFA World Coach of the Year award, joined by Spaniards Pep Guardiola (Bayern Munich) and Luis Enrique (Barcelona).

On 19 January 2016, he resigned as manager of Chile.

I've just heard a rumour from a usually reliable source of a soon to be announced appointment as Everton Manager of somebody who, with the benefit of hindsight, I'm surprised nobody considered before on TW as far I know.

Paul 41, Yes, I am very happy with how EFC are going about their business in securing a new manager.
2 weeks ago Martinez was sacked to the relief of the majority of Evertonians.
I say majority as I believe there was 9% who wanted him to stay for 1 more season in his role.

So in 2 weeks we expect EFC to have lined up, interviewed and installed a new manager on millions of pounds per year?
In your dreams! It would take my company the best part of 6 weeks to recruit a manager as we would want to make sure we had done our homework on the candidate and they wanted the job for the right reasons.

I have total confidence that Moshiri will want to carry out his due diligence before making such an appointment as I believe he knows how critical it will be in relation to his future plans and sending out a message to the supporters.

If they wanted a quick appointment why haven't they installed Moyes? He is available right now and knows the club inside and out. The reason is, they don't want him and have other targets in place who they believe can move the club forward in line with their objectives.

Ps, Mourinho has been odds on for the United job for months and reportedly been paid £4m to sit at home and not accept another job, so please don't use this example of how quickly MU have acted in appointing a new manager.

So yes, I am okay with everything and have total faith that Moshiri is steering the ship in the right direction in this regard.

One more name for the hat..

Michel Preud'homme

Was sporting director of Porto when they appointed Mourinho. Has won trophies at all clubs he's managed. Good win % at all clubs and has some good players at his current club ( Rom's cousin is there ) Likes a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 and will adapt tactics during a game and it's said his teams ' fight for 90 minutes and never give up.'

Sounds like a decent manager
but ( ah, there's always a 'but' ) he doesn't seem to stay at a club very long.
