Matty Pennington is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury in today's defeat to Real Betis in the Dresden Cup.

The young defender had to be withdrawn with 12 minutes left of the exhibition game that ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and the Spanish side won 4-3 on penalties.

The extent of the injury will be fully assessed upon Pennington's return to Finch Farm.

Koeman will have to dust off his boots and play centre back against Spurs at this rate!

Stones cannot leave until we have a replacement lined up. It would be crazy otherwise.

The squad is painfully short of quality cover. We need to start signing players and get them integrated into the club.

I blame Martinez for this latest hamstring injury

TWers really should "run a sweep" on how many hammies Everton first team squad players manage to accumulate versus yellow cards, by end of season.

Sorting a "fair portion" of these "soft tissues" *cough* would be like ...
...… a new signing !

Pennington was at Walsall most of last season, he only came back the week of the FA Cup semi so hardly Martinez or his staff's fault considering they were sent packing shortly after.

Jesus, 6 posts and no-one thinks of the kid hoping to make his mark under a new manager.

Good luck Matty. Shit happens come back stronger.

Pete @ 7. Re my comment about Martinez being to blame for the latest hamstring. It wasn't a serious suggestion!

Alan @ 8. Good point. We should all wish him well. Let's hope, that after assessment, it's found to be not as serious as we assume.

Alan @8.
I've heard a faint rumour that very, very occasionally some TW posters have deployed either "humour and/or sarcasm" in their submissions. Clearly such remarks could be open to complete misinterpretation. Deplorable, I know.

Lyndon & Michael may be able to shed some light upon this duplicitous behaviour.

BTW, I'm sure that you'll agree that Richard Wright could "do a job in goal for us" ?
(Clue: "do a JOB").
