The Blues fell behind inside the opening minute when Marcus Forss latched onto a long ball and beat Chris Renshaw to open the scoring. Everton responded with some decent attacking moves and their pressure final showed in the 25th minute when Antony Evans's blocked shot fell to Hornby who prodded home. The Toffees then began to dominate the contest but they found the visiting Baggies impossible to penetrate further and had to be content with a point.
