Lennon completes transfer to Burnley

Tuesday, 23 January, 2018 37comments  |  Jump to most recent

Aaron Lennon has concluded a deal to join Burnley for an undisclosed nominal fee, ending a three-year association with Everton.

The 30-year-old's contract with the Blues was due to expire in the summer but he has elected to move to Turf Moor in search of regular first-team football.

The Blues agreed a small fee for Lennon while the player is happy with the personal terms on offer with the Clarets.

Signed by Roberto Martinez in 2015, initially on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, Lennon earned a permanent deal at Goodison Park with his performances under the Catalan and made the switch from White Hart Lane for £4.5m the following August.

Since then he has made 77 appearances for Everton, scoring nine goals.

A pity we didn't persuade Aaron to sign when Leeds had their fire-sale. Wish him the best. He always gave his best in the blue shirt.

Hope it works out for Aaron at Burnley; sensible move for him really; with the arrival of Walcott, and return to fitness of Bolasie; his chances would have become limited.

Like others have mentioned he always gave a good account of himself, with full commitment; he also had to fight his demons outside of football; he came through all that too.

Slightly off topic, but I see we are linked with Joe Bryan of Bristol City; they have mentioned a fee of ٥M, which would be a snip at today's inflated prices; most of the ones who are untried and unknown from the Continent are being mentioned in the 㿀M plus category.

I will be watching him tonight, against Man City, which will be an uphill task; but home advantage, a one-goal deficit; anything is possible, look at Swansea last night!

The slowest team in the league sell one of their only quick players. What happens if Walcott gets a knock? Every decision the club has made has been batshit since Koeman's sacking.

Good luck at Burnley Lennon, you will be playing under a good manager for once.

I would also like to add my best wishes, Aaron. A smaller club but a bigger manager.

Best wishes to, Aaron. Always worked hard for the team. Never a complaint heard or caused. Did a nice job putting pressure on the opposition defense and was one of our few players who would attack the ball in the penalty area.

Also put team first by protecting Kenny to the detriment of his own offense. May he find success and happiness.

Good luck, Aaron but I agree with James #6. If we have an injury to Walcott or Bolasie, who is expected to fill the void?

Niasse, Davies, Coleman. I've seen very little from Bolasie so far. Let's face it, we are still 4 players away at least from being able to challenge the top 6.

Never gave less than 100%. He'll get a great reception when he comes back. I think the squad is weaker without him. Certainly, we don't have a defensively capable right sided winger now.

Always found he gave 100% whatever was asked of him.

Good Luck Aaron hope things are good for you at Burnley.

You will be well remembered for your input here.

Good move for the lad and the squad definitely needs trimming.

He deserves game time; something Everton can't provide as every point is precious at this stage.

Good luck Aaron, many Spurs fans I know said they were sorry to see you go 3 years ago and at EFC you go with the fans blessing.

The standard-bearer for that oft forgotten attribute:

Effort.

Hope Burnley loves ya. Role model for any player as he always gave 100%.

Anyone remember Southampton away in November 2016? The "Josh Sims game"? Lennon was a decent player for us and was generally very committed however he did not give his all in that game and I vividly remember for that reason saying I did not want to see him in our shirt ever again.

I recognise the fact that he had health issues and am pleased for him that he overcame them but let's not go overboard. I expect (but do not get) 100% commitment from all of our players in every game - Aaron was probably more committed than most of the current sorry bunch but I wouldn't elevate him to the level of the truly 100% committed players we've had in the past.

For me, a limited player who gave of his best most of the time I wish him well.

ps: Whatever happened to Josh Sims, a superstar in the making according to Sky pundits that day!

James (#6) – 'Every decision the club has made has been batshit since Koeman's sacking'.

I think you're in a generous mood, James. Only since Koeman's sacking??? Are you sure. What about the other 20 years?

James (6) and Brian (11) – I'd like to think Lookman and Vlasic are next in line, but of course we know that's just crazy talk!

David (#13), the top 6 is a million miles away from where we are now. Let's focus on staying up.

Didn't want Lennon in the first place (back when ٢m wasn't peanuts!) but appreciated his effort this term, he's had a great attitude and for that it's a shame to see him leave before the summer. Best of luck!

Here's hoping Bolasie actually turns out to be better than Lennon. We sure ain't seen it yet!

I would prefer that you stayed, Aaron, because I feel the squad is weaker with you not in it. However, I can understand you wanting more time on the pitch. Best of luck for the future and thanks for the memories.

@23 Unfortunately Bill us lot on here have about as much chance of regular game time than Lookman or Vlasic do under Allardyce.

A bit disappointed we didn't keep him until summer, we have only really got Walcott. If he gets injured it's back to wondering what's playing right side.

Bolasie, I'm not sure we can really even class him at this current moment in time as “quick” – to me, he seems to have lost a yard since he's been back Maybe he'll improve but...

Then you have Lookman who yet again doesn't even make the bench last Saturday – just what is the issue surrounding him???

Vlasic – I think the jury has remained out; he showed some good touches early in the season but in recent appearances he's kind of done nothing.

Another stupid move by this horrendously run club. No need to sell him and we need him.

He had struck up a good understanding with Kenny, always put a shift in and would have only got more effective if the team got going. No coincidence Kenny had a poor game on Saturday with no Lennon in front of him.

We now have a striker playing wide instead of a winger. So unnecessary and shortsighted.

Jim Bennings
31 Posted 24/01/2018 at 12:18:18
Good point that, Jim Wilson .

Before Christmas, Kenny went on record about how great it was the understanding he had struck up with Lennon. I guess Kenny's time at right back will be coming to an end soon anyhow.

The club has probably seen Lennon surplus to requirements but I would have done it in summer not now.

It's clear as day Lookman has no long term future with Everton, not one manager fancies him, so there's clearly something wrong there?

Let's hope Walcott has left his injury woes behind him at Arsenal because he's all we've really got.

Aaron Lennon would have been more than useful between now and the end of the season. I would have preferred we paid his wages and kept him rather than take a nominal fee. A mistake this, in my opinion, I hope it is not a huge one.

I can't believe the Echo is reporting the club are offering Sandro out on loan with a view to a permanent transfer.

I know we have to trim the squad but he hasn't had a fair crack at the whip yet and the current first team are royally shite.

Also, Allardyce is contemplating Lookman out on loan.

Seriously!

Thanks, Aaron, for your efforts, always a grafter when selected, all the best in your career with Burnley.
