Everton have tied promising young striker Shayne Lavery down with the award of a one-year contract extension with the club.

The 19-year-old, an acquisition from Glenavon three years ago who has already made his senior debut for Northern Ireland, is the latest of David Unsworth's Under-23s side to put pen to paper on new terms for the coming season.

"I'm so happy to have signed a new deal,” he told evertonfc.com . “It's great being at Everton, it's a massive club.

"I came over here when I was 16 and improved my all-round game. There's a lot I can still do to get better, though, and I want to keep developing.

"The training under Unsy is intense but enjoyable, too. It gets you fit and he is a very good coach."

Promising for the lad, although sequential 1-year contracts don't exactly indicate high hopes.

He was troubled by a hamstring injury and didn't make many starts last season — only 3 across all U23 competitions — with another 11 as sub. However, he popped in 4 goals, which is a pretty good ratio.

I expect it's one more year to prove himself. He's 19 now, not far off the likes of Calvert-Lewin in terms of age, but a mile behind him in reality. Let's hope he has a great season and really pushes on.

Seems like we are toughening up a bit and not offering long term deals to young adults as before. e.g. Garbutt, Henen etc. Could be risky if we have good ones as they can start talking to European clubs come Christmas then leave for free. On the other hand, it means we don't end up with a dozen Conor McAleny, Sam Byrne types till their 23 or 24.

Kieran, I would hope that our new setup will recognise the improvement and offer improved terms before the end of the year, if it's worthwhile.
