Everton will play a pre-season friendly against Stade Rennais in northern France on Saturday, 28 July 2018.

Marco Silva's team will continue their preparations for the 2018-19 campaign with a match against the Ligue 1 club at Stade Municipal de Vitré, home of AS Vitré, with kick-off at 6:30pm CET (5:30pm BST).

It will be the Everton's sixth pre-season friendly of the summer after games against ATV Irdning, Bury, Lille, Porto and Blackburn Rovers, with Valencia also set to visit Goodison Park on Saturday, 4 August 2018.

Stade Rennais – commonly referred to as Rennes – finished 5th in Ligue 1 last season and boast the likes of former West Ham striker Diafra Sakho in their squad.

Isn't there also supposed to be a game against an African team?

The mighty Gor Mahia still to play, Alan... Yes!

Along with the lack of player recruitment, this pre-season seems very disjointed and has a lack of planning put into in.

These friendlies seem very last minute. You would have thought having a DOF in charge, things would be different. This doesn't bode well heading into the new season.

The Director of Football has only been at the club a few weeks himself though, Kristian, and I'm not sure these things actually bother the ones that count because it's just pre-season, to the players.

Looks to me like Marco wants some more playing time with the team in order to get them set up playing his way before the Wolves game.

Looks to me like the game against Gor Mahia has been quietly dropped as it says this in the latest official news item:

The Toffees, who wrap up their preparations for the new campaign against Valencia at Goodison Park on August 4, created a succession of openings against Portuguese champions Porto without being able to apply a decisive touch.

Perhpas M&M weren't taken with SportPesa structuring the pre-season fixture list?

I don't know what friendlies if any the U-23s have lined up but I'd have thought that with a 1st team squad of 30 odd and U-23s it would have been possible to put some sort of a team together to keep sponsors happy.

Then again, it is only 17 days until the season kicks off.

Alan,

The U23s have played three pre-season friendlies so far, and I'm expecting more but I can't find them listed in the normal place at the Official Website. They put a decent enough report up for the third one on Saturday, where Unsworth's lads put four past Stockport County in the second half. It's the only one of their reports where they have listed the line-up.

Thanks, Michael, I did read the report on the Stockport game and saw the result against Coventry but I was surprised as after last year and the announcement of the game against the winners of some sort of round robin between several African teams that this wasn't some part of a sponsorship arrangement.

You're right, there's plenty of players in the combined squad that surely need pre-season matches. You might have hit upon something with Gor Mahia, though, Alan. Maybe that fixture is not listed for the first team because it will be against the Under-23s? (Bit of a snub to the sponsor, if true?) But when?

This could be an opportunity, Michael, a thread on what team made up from likely U-23s and no chance of a game 1st team squad players could we field;
Stek or Hewelt
Martina Browning Galloway Robinson
Schneiderlin(c) Vlasic Dowell
Bolasie Evans C-Lewin

subs: all those youngsters recently given one year contract extensions
