Season › 2019-20 › News Gueye into last eight at Afcon with Senegal Lyndon Lloyd Friday, 5 July, 2019 14comments | Jump to most recent Mohamed El-Shahed/AFP/Getty Senegal have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations this evening thanks to a 1-0 win over Uganda. Fit again after overcoming a minor injury, Gueye played the full 90 minutes as the Teranga Lions edged the round of 16 match thanks to Sadio Mané's goal. The forward also missed a penalty. Senegal will now play Morocco's conquerors, Benin, in Cairo on 10 July. Reader Comments (14) Note: the following content is not moderated or vetted by the site owners at the time of submission. Disclaimer Liam Reilly 1 Posted 05/07/2019 at 22:29:15 Bad news.No preseason for Gueye, injury in waiting early into the new season, though maybe with PSG. Billy Roberts 2 Posted 05/07/2019 at 22:42:22 Oh Liam you are so positive aren't you?Fuckin hell, mate why bother, isn't the tournament he is in,is a " pre season " ?Any chance he has a couple of weeks off?Or is that unprofessional? Jay Wood[BRZ] 3 Posted 05/07/2019 at 23:02:29 TBF to Liam, perhaps he didn't word it the best, but if Gueye stays with us he will need extensive R&R, rather than join up with the squad for full-blown training. It's a genuine concern that many international footballers have had two consecutive heavy summers of football - the WC last year, the various heavy duty regional tournaments this summer. They will have to be well managed to avoid burnout or picking up a stress injury.Gueye in particular will need careful watching given his high energy style. Mina will have benefitted from appearing at the Copa America, given how little club football he played for us last season. A combo of being dropped and getting the mumps means Richarlison will not be as burnt out as he could have been. With so many top teams dependent on many players from every continent, it will be interesting to see how they go from mid-season on. Mike Gaynes 4 Posted 05/07/2019 at 23:49:46 Liam #1, bad news. The sun will come up tomorrow morning. Skin cancer in waiting for millions of people.Cripes. Minik Hansen 5 Posted 06/07/2019 at 00:44:01 Top teams must have many players still in various tournaments, so it's not just us. Rather have those players than unable to pushing forward up the table. Let's hope Marco Silva gets the balance right. Jack Convery 6 Posted 06/07/2019 at 03:01:02 Race horses get better treatment than top footballers these days. 3 months used to be the norm for a rest before pre season training now its more like 3 weeks - ridiculous. The Spurs players were goosed in the CL Final and is it any wonder - how many of them played for England in Russia last summer. If Levy had let Poch bring in 3 or 4 quality players he could have rotated his squad as Gnasher did over at Mordor. Then we might have got the Spurs team who took us apart instead of the knackered version who lost to the RS. Just think Henderson has a CL medal f me. Si Pulford 7 Posted 06/07/2019 at 06:30:59 Ronaldo plays about a million games a year and never looks tired. I wish we had more players that played loads of games. It would indicate that they where half decent. Let's dace it-ours never play past the third round in the cups so they should have some energy left for tournaments. Tommy Surgenor 8 Posted 06/07/2019 at 07:34:51 My issue with this is that it is kicking the can down the road about a potential transfer. As mentioned by multiple posters in various threads, there's a strong belief in the ToffeeWeb community that clubs are waiting for players involved in international tournaments to be eliminated before ramping up any interest. I'd prefer to know now if Gana is going or not so that Marco can get a new man in and up to speed with what his duties/role will be. Even if Gana stays, we will need a plan B for the first 6 weeks of the season until Gana is rested and up to speed. Tommy Surgenor 9 Posted 06/07/2019 at 08:12:48 On a separate note, I see Simms didn't make the journey to Kenya. Looks like the U23 squad will get a good run out. Hugh Jenkins 10 Posted 06/07/2019 at 08:20:03 Tommy (8) - Whilst we don't know what individual player's intentions are nor who the club is targeting in the transfer market as Silva pointed out towards the end of last season, he and Brands know and you can be sure that they are organized and working in the background. I, for one, like the fact that they are being tight lipped about it and I hope that when all is revealed, we shall all be pleasantly surprised. Phil (Kelsall) Roberts 11 Posted 06/07/2019 at 08:29:10 Hopefully Mane is also totally knackered and unfit to play for 6 months. Martin Berry 12 Posted 06/07/2019 at 08:40:22 Its always a consideration when signing players who will be involved in AFCON.Footballers are not machines and they need a period of recuperation, and I fear even someone with Gueye's lungs may be burned out.The idea to have these type of tournaments and the World Cup after a hard season needs consideration as to a shorter season or to hold them mid term. This of course would be the biggest shake up in the history of the game but club/player power could make the shift. Mike Allison 13 Posted 06/07/2019 at 09:45:02 Rugby has introduced ‘mandatory rest periods'. It's a more physical game so there was more need but it's a good idea. Football clubs do try to manage workload but the temptation to sneak a top player back early is often too great. The players involved in tournaments, as Billy said at #2, won't have the same need for ‘pre-season' as they've stayed at competitive level. The problem is more come sometime in November-March when the player hits a bit of a wall. They need little breaks in between. With the size of our squad and the number of young players with ‘potential' who need an opportunity, we shouldn't be too worried about managing the older international players' workloads.Maybe they're not going to be good enough, but Davies, Williams and Baningime all get more game time if Gueye is ‘managed', not to mention we currently still have McCarthy and Schneiderlin. Liam Reilly 14 Posted 06/07/2019 at 20:11:11 Wow, didn't expect to get hammered for that little nugget but hey, it's about opinions I guess and mine is that this lad, because of his his style of play could do with some time off. This is not a preseason, his season hasn't ended yet. Expect more you Mike at #4; isn't this a football forum. We've all got and know others with far more pressing problems but don't we enjoy football to get away from that.
