Gbamin seals £23m Everton move

Updated Everton have tied up the £23m transfer of Jean-Philippe Gbamin after the Mainz midfielder flew in to undergo a medical.

The Blues had agreed the deal with FSV Mainz 05 for the Ivorian and all that remained was for his physical exam to be completed and the forms signed to finalise his personal terms on a five-year contract.

Gbamin, 23, broke into the Lens first-team in 2013 after spells with Aire-sur-la-Lys and US Saint-Quentin Blessy's youth setups.

Mainz brought him to the Bundesliga three years ago as a promising France U21 international but he switched his international allegiance to Ivory Coast, the country of his birth, shortly afterwards and he has been capped 11 times to date.

Gbamin has effectively been brought in to replace Idrissa Gueye who joined Paris Saint-Germain this week but he can also operate as a centre-half if needed. He will wear the No. 25 jersey.

“It's a big moment with a lot of emotion and now it's on me to prove on the pitch why they bought me,” Gbamin said.

“I'm excited because Everton is a great club here in England with a big history and ambition so I didn't think for more than a moment — I wanted to come here.”

Brands is something.

Too bad we didn't get him when Moshiri first tried to sign him.

Things are boiling up nicely so it would appear. So far, everyone carrying the Brands brand has measured up so let's hope it continues. The guy appears to really know his business. No wonder Moshiri made him a director to stop him being poached. Given how he's handling things, he could well be a future chairman in the making.

I'm normally a pessimist (rhetorical question: Does being an Evertonian turn one into a pessimist, or does the club attract people who are pessimists already?) but it's hard not to be impressed by Brands. This guy is a magician. This and last summer we have signed a plethora of top-class young talent. Amazing!!

I think the club needs to start thinking of how we can retain Marcel Brands for the long term.

Clarence,

I spoke with Marcel Brands a couple of months ago. He has a natural charisma and charm that I didn't expect. He also comes across as a sincere, nice dude.

I'm not surprised that he manages to bring the likes of Bernard, Gomes and Mina to the club in the face of so much competition.

After the brief conversation I went about my day with absolute trust that the club was in good hands.

So much ''happening'' but not yet carved in stone.

Hopefully some of these ''happenings'' will bear fruition soon and we can get to see a big improvement in this team's results.

Great news. Now let's announce Kean and Gbamin already!

I'd really like something official before the weekend. If not, good things come to those that wait.

Hoping they're both announced before the weekend is over so I can finally relax. Might be a bit greedy to say we still need a CB and RB and possibly a winger.

The Sun is quoting the Times as reporting Brands has asked Chelsea for another loan of Zouma.

But of course what Zouma himself said ten days ago was: “I enjoyed my time at Everton but I'm a Chelsea player and we'll see what will happen now in the future. I think it will be here at Chelsea... I'm a Chelsea player and I want to do well to get my chance and be here.”

The fee is high (for Maguire) but personally I'd have him at Everton. He's a quality defender. I'm not sure why you lot are having a pop at him.

Gbamin looks decent as well, and handy he can play centre half as well as midfield. Looks a good buy.

Wonder how much the fact he is also English bumped up the fee?

I guess looking at it if the shite paid £75M for Dyke then I guess Leicester had to hold out for similar.

James Marshall
39 Posted 02/08/2019 at 16:05:44
Yep, PL teams have more money than most in Europe so the fees are inflated. It's all relative though, so the fees are quite skewed versus the money clubs have nowadays.

Mike, let's not forget Maguire's career trajectory. So he's a Sheffield lad and came through the Sheff Utd youth system. They were in freefall at the time and he played 3 full seasons for them, all of them in League 1. He then stepped up to the Premier League with Hull and barely played, and was shipped out on loan to Wigan in the Championship. The next year he was in and out of the side as Steve Bruce got Hull promoted once more. Hull were then in a complete mess and had a squad of about 10 players, causing Bruce to resign knowing relegation was inevitable without new players. Then Phelan stepped up and had no choice but to play Maguire who looked a bit shaky, and was really third choice. Phelan was then sacked and cue our own Marco who suddenly made him first choice and transformed him into what he is now, that 6 months being the platform to get him into the England side and a big money transfer to Leicester. Okay he was in the England side as a Leicester player, but it was August and he'd played about 3 games for Leicester so it was really on his Hull performances.

in the run up to the Everton v Leicester game, Silva had the following to say about Maguire:

"When I joined Hull, he didn't play enough matches until that point. He was third choice behind Michael Dawson and Curtis Davies. With me he played always. I saw in him fantastic qualities to achieve something really important in the future. He's a very good player, he's strong, he has quality. He had many things to improve because he didn't play at a high level when he was younger and he's achieved it through hard work."

Mike Gaynes
41 Posted 02/08/2019 at 16:06:09
Mark, that's the first time I've ever seen the word "brilliant" applied to Maguire.

I consider him to be what you guys call "bang average" or a bit above.

Steve, I'd say Silva's description of Maguire nicely matches what he said about Keane last fall. And I think Keane is every bit as good a defender as Maguire. Granted Maguire scores a couple more goals every year, but I think Keane makes fewer mistakes at the back. And he cost 1/3.

Kevin Prytherch
42 Posted 02/08/2019 at 16:09:22
Didn't he move to Leicester the same season we got Keane? They were the two standout centre backs in the championship at the time.

We should have bought them both.

Maguire couldn't get in the side initially as, very difficult to fathom, he was behind Alex Bruce (baffling, that one). Once he came in though he was very good and became a regular.

Kev #47, they are very similar players in both style and ability, with a similar weakness (pace), so I'm not sure that would have worked out.

Mark #50, if you're right I will hold up my hand and salute your prescience. In my opinion he is already as good as he will ever be, and that's a bridge tower with some swashbuckle to him.

49 Posted 02/08/2019 at 16:28:15
I saw Maguire for Hull against Chelsea at the bridge. It was the game where a fella got knocked out and we all thought he was dead (it did end his career). Maguire stood out in a very poor Hull side who have it a go until Hazzard came on, but Maguire also looked a bit heavy /slow for the modern game. I wasn't 100%0 sure but I thought we should have picked him up tbh as I thought a bit of fitness work and he could be a good CH or DM. I just want sure about his pace but be seemed to do well against a strong Chelsea team.

I never thought he'd be worth 80m though. I still think Keane is perhaps a better player. We will see

Steve Ferns

Mark Frere
52 Posted 02/08/2019 at 16:46:48
I can't believe people labeling Maguire as 'average'. He turns much quicker than our very own Kean. He reads the game excellently and is brilliant at playing the ball out from defence. I've watched him have many centre forwards in his pocket. He will be a massive success at Man Utd. One of my mates is a Blades fan who used to watch Maguire week-in, week out and he says Maguire was superior to Jagielka... and he really rated Jags. We did well to get rid of a bang average centre-back called John Stones who has never developed into the around defender that Maguire is.
Mark Tanton
53 Posted 02/08/2019 at 16:46:58
Yes Steve, it was Alex Bruce who was getting in ahead of Maguire and others for a while. He did have some qualities - bravery and good old fashioned defending, but not a huge amount else.

Looks like Gbamin passed his medical and we're just waiting on Everton's announcement now.

On Maguire - he's a fantastic player. 䀁 million is too high but you have to admit it looks a signing that will begin to transform that sorry Man Utd team.

Jerome Shields
56 Posted 02/08/2019 at 17:22:23
Really impressed with Gbamin. In my opinion he covers the defensive midfield position vacancy and offers deeper cover at Centre back. The main improvement is going forward , particularly pass completion and link play, which Gueye could have been better at. A tendency of Gueye to risk a inaccurate pass, lossing possession was his main weakness. At. PSG he could have problems with this, but I hope he won't.

I was in a restaurant and there where two Man U fans discussing pre season, players and the team. They where frustrated by mixed signals and a lack of confidence in the new Manager and Woodward. I said that their conversation reminded me of Everton. After Sir Alex left the whole inadequacy of both Executive and Management on of the pitch was exposed. Without changes, a untried Manager and player power there was no rhyme or reason on the way forward. They both totally agree. I told them it will take 5 years to sort out, that's if a start is made now.

The purchase of Maguire for £80 million is ridiculous. There is no system for him to fit into and the new Manager is going to struggle.

If Brands can get Zouma on loan , as well as these other signings, I would suggest that the lack of corporate governance in appointing Brands to the Board should be ignored and he should be made Chairman immediately.

We've wasted fortunes ourselves on absolute garbage.
Lets not get carried away with these two signings either when or if they ever happen.
The only thing that matters is winning trophies, we're not here to make players and agents rich and we're currently in the biggest trophy drought in our club's history if people have forgotten so wait til the silverwares in our hands before celebrating or getting excited.

Trying to work out our new midfield positions. I'm assuming the following nailed on playing with a lone striker in Kean.

Richarlison, Gomes, Gbamin, Sigurdsson, Delph.

Where does this leave Bernard, Davies, Schnederlin, Walcott,

Then dead wood.
Besic, McCarthy.

?

Joe Corgan
80 Posted 02/08/2019 at 18:45:00
Philip 79 - We need cover and rotation but I would expect our strongest midfield to consist of Gomes and Gbarmin in holding or deep-lying positions, with Sigurdsson behind the front man. Richarlison and Bernard wide.

Delph, Davies and Walcott as cover and options. Besic and McCarthy definitely on the way out with Schneiderlin a bit of a “wait and see.” He was better at the end of last season but not spectacular.

Just my thoughts.

Jay Harris
81 Posted 02/08/2019 at 18:52:38
I have a feeling Delph will play instead of Bernard in those games where we need a morephysical presence in MF and Bernard will pplay when we need to open teams up.

Also Gbamin may well play CB or in a back 3 unless we get Zouma or ANO in.

Steve Ferns
82 Posted 02/08/2019 at 18:56:08

Paul Burns @77

I agree with most of your post however we do have the right to take the piss.

For far to long Man Utd have been a spearhead of an oligopoly of clubs driving player prices and wages to ridiculous lengths. To the point where Harry Maguire is worth as much as C Ronaldo at his peak!

They have helped themselves to our player pool. Under paying for Rooney and Lukaku whilst handing us their deadwood.

We are now beginning to compete in their market. Thankfully although we need a Centre Back we are not foolish enough to pay 80 Million for one.

It used to be about shrewd management. Kendalls team of the 80s was mostly cheap unknowns by comparison, but won almost everything.

Greed, Chairman, Agents and doing whatever it takes to stay on top has ruined the market.

Sorry to be petty but I hope it bites them in the arse and provides us with a chance to catch up and win said trophies.

I recently saw an episode of ESPN FC where they discussed Maguire. He got rave reviews and one of the commentators who is from the UK said Maguire is the only English center back who is really able to carry the ball and that included John Stones. At that time they did not discuss the fee.

Unless we sign another top class right winger, then I think the team Joe@80 suggests will be the starting line up.

However, I can also see us using 4-3-3 at times - particularly if we get ahead or just want to be solid and hit on break - with Siggy and Bernard sacrificed, Gomes, Gbamin and Delph in the middle, and (Pace) Walcott, Kean and Richie up top.

I also think Schneiderlin and Davies can still do a job in a midfield 3 too.

Lots of options, and with 1-2 extra top class additions we really should push for the top end! #COYB

Kevin Prytherch

I think that Delph may well play in front of An attacking player for some games, but I think it will be in a midfield 3 and Sigurdsson might be the one sacrificed. Especially if we are under the cosh

As for Harry Maguire who is getting an "airing" on this thread, he is the sort of player who Marcel Brands would have bought from Hull at £12m (plus add ons), two years later he is worth £80m
My point is that you don't need expensive signings if you know what you are looking at, hence Everton primarily buying young talent.
A great time to be an Evertonian and I feel next week is going to be very interesting too, welcome Wilf ?

That'll do James, but it ain't perfect. We ain't French so we'll never get it spot on. But Deen is more accurate than Deen-yay or worse Dig-nyay. It's actually more like Deen but with a gn sound at the end that we English can't do.

One thing I think we need to appreciate is that Gbamin is replacing a player who's tackling stats are rivalled by only a few players in world football and although he's a defensive minded player he is rather different to Gueye. Just something to take into consideration before any criticism is thrown his way when he doesn't reach the high levels Gueye did.

On another note I've been nerding it up and if you're at all curious here's how to pronounce the new boy's names. Gbamin = Baman (silent G). Kean = Ken.

Mark Tanton

Welcome lad. He's wearing 4. A good number these days for a combative midfielder. High status.
Francis van Lierop
116 Posted 02/08/2019 at 20:01:39
I think Gbamin is another shrewd buy.
I wonder how soon after January (when it was known Gana was sure to leave) that he became a prospect, or the target?

On the topic of Marcel Brands, when I've got some time, I'll write some more about him.
Funny thing, I have a Feyenoord supporting mate, when I asked him about MB, he couldn't remember anything about him.
MB was a player there for 2 years, and for some funny reason, I can.
He was also T.D. at my local club AZ Alkmaar, and unearthed Moussa Dembélé (the Spurs one!)
My favourite player then. He was a striker then..

As for Maguire, a good defender, but 80m is silly money.
If the deal had gone down before the Nations League matches, the (Dutch) pundits will have pissed themselves laughing.
I lost the count how many times he lost the ball trying to go forwards. Not the brightest spark..

Steve Ferns
117 Posted 02/08/2019 at 20:03:58
Mark, he is wearing 25. There's an article on the official site as to why.

Francis, we know little about Brands and right now, he's the Messiah to us Blues, so anything you can say about him will be greatly appreciated. I await your article like waiting for Moise Kean to sign!

122 Posted 02/08/2019 at 20:16:18
Not just that Tony, it's also a marked change from Gueye to Gbamin. Now I don't profess to know much at all about the lad, but the profile he has, and what he himself says he can offer the side, it's the change I expected and hoped for.

We lose the ultimate midfield hunter in Gueye. Someone who runs about Tackling and then struggles when he recovers position and lacks the positional discipline to really anchor a midfield and replace him with someone who has those qualities but less of them, and then better ball skills, and more positional discipline. Someone who is used to playing at the bottom of a midfield diamond. This means someone who can complement and work better with Gomes and so change the dynamic of the side.

He says it himself, one of his best qualities is "the transition". in other words, he can turn defence into attack, he does not need to play it sideways for someone else to do this because he lacks the passing ability. This means we can become much more of a counter-attacking side and hit sides harder on the break with faster transitions.

What we did best of all was win the ball in the final third. We were the number 1 at that in the Premier League last season. That's too far forwards for it all to be Gueye, in reality it was the strikers like Calvert-Lewin winning it back. So if Gbamin sits deeper and lets Gomes higher up the pitch we can change this stat into being more effective in terms of resulting in key chances, and more importantly, goals.

This change though brings a major problem. PACE. We need more pace at the back. We need Zouma's pace. Mina is pretty quick, but not over 10-20 yards. He will get in his stride and recover fast. But not as fast as Zouma. This is something we now need to address quickly.

Maguire will definitely improve Utd. Just that they really need to improve a lot more than central defence.

I remember that horrid kopite Carra arguing with that horrid kopite Redknapp about whether VD would improve the team with Carra saying he wouldn't. Muppet.

We are looking okay at this point. A bit of trimming required of course and another striker maybe and l will be happy to see us through to the January window with what we have

Eric, just rumours mate. No one has seen him yet. As James said, he boarded a plane for sure, destination was believed to be Monte Carlo. His agent and Farad Moshiri both live there, which is why I found it strange that it was reported that Raiola, said agent, flew into Liverpool this morning to finalise the deal? I'd have thought Brands would fly out to stay with Moshiri and sort it all out there and then for the player to fly in to Liverpool for the unveiling.

Steve Ferns
139 Posted 02/08/2019 at 20:44:31
Exactly Tony. He needs to improve his distribution somewhat, picking the right pass is essential. But he has the right coach for this. If he can keep winning the ball and surging forwards at speed, then the quick forwards can exploit space, in behind, and cause the opposition chaos as they are drawn to the ball and to back pedal as Richarlison and Bernard scurry for the ball over the top. This is where Kean comes in as he is a good link player and has good passing abilities, so perhaps a lay off to Sigurdsson or Gomes who can then use their creative skills to great a goal-scoring opportunity. He has a lot of qualities to really make us rip teams apart on the counter. I can really see why we signed him. Let's hope he can bring this to the Premier League as it's easier said than done.

It really creates competition for places and some who haven't performed over the last two seasons or more now know they have a battle on their hands to get into the team. (hopefully).

I think it was thought Kenny needed lots more game time and he'll get that in Germany. If he doesn't improve he'll be sold.

Utd want the boost Liverpool got from VanDyke. Maguire will help I think but not enough. AND it will hopefully weaken Leicester, although they have cash to replace him. Maybe not enough time to do so.

Wondering how we are going to get the ball to our speedy frontmen. It's been all about the crosses from the wings. Would like to see some clever movement through the middle.

Anyway. It's onward and hopefully upward!

Maguire £ 80 million. Maguire... £80 million. Andy Carroll was a steal for Liverpool in comparison. This is, in my view the most staggering signing I have ever seen. He is like Bruce or Pallister; reilable and err, well reliabilty costs now days.
I need to bring this back to Everton, I suppose, so, I think our ex player Stones is vastly superior and I would take our current centre backs ahead of him.
This will haunt Manchester United. Harry Maguire, if part of a vast plan, might rejuvenate them. He is an old fashioned stopper, he will give his all, he will put his head in, he will pop up and score a late winner( off the corner of his head) but, by fuck, no matter how inflated the market, United have been royally fleeced. Brilliant, Brilliant stuff.
He is not, by the way, a" fine footballer", he really, really isn't.
So, to get back to our club;I think this makes our summer look quite good.

I'm intrigued by the winger thing. If we really wanted Malcom we could have offered a better deal than Zenit, I'm convinced most of these Zaha stories originate from his agent so that leaves Neres or a bolt from the blue. Could Silva even be planning to play Kean outside a still to come striker?

Been watching old videos of Patrick Vieira and the similarities are frightening. I can see why Arsenal wanted him.

Both Vieira and Gbamin like to drive forward with the ball. Both have good link up play. Both have quick feet. They both have excellent long and short range passing. Both command the defensive third with authority and they both do their best work on the counter.

Major difference was that Vieira was a beast in the final third. The complete player.

Gbamin is still developing but if he can dominate in the Premier League as he did in Germany we might just have a player on our hands.

Still a little worried we may not have a great start to the season because of the late and new arrivals. Hoping we hit the ground running and build some confidence.

Mike@185, I would not be surprised to see us have another nibble at Zaha. I also think Zouma is pretty unlikely at this time but I'm curious to see what surprises await us on final few days of the window.

Dennis @ 158 - We've also got La Bamba to get the crowd going. We might have to scrub up on the Spanish though...!!!

Welcome to the blue family to Jean-Phiippe.

Give us the full 100% and you will be loved.

Nice to see Jean-Philippe had the respect enough to turn up to our mighty club to sign his contract, in a 2 piece suit not a pair of ripped Flemmings with his arse hanging out. That's proper respect in my book.

His English is excellent, his German must also be pretty decent besides obv being french speaking. What has most impressed me is the links to the other teams who were thinking of getting him, Liverpool and Arsenal. I think he will do very well. That said, Gana was a great little player for us, but my god, I think those constant references to the stats are overstated. Clearly he was a terrific tackler, but there is so much more to a midfielder's game than that. It's the most important position on the pitch. And even though we've had three good years out of him, I never felt we had a genuine quality player, like I did when watching Gareth Barry.

Who was it who said Delph is the direct replacement for Gueye?

Think I will wait to see how the lad performs before naming Brands a guru. There are lots of good signs he is young and by the looks of it has lots of years ahead that should be his best as a footballer.

It does look like Silva and Brands have plans and work well together, which is alot more than Koeman had.

A couple more in and we can go into the season confident of improving on last season.

Get in! I suspect McCarthy and Besic will leave but what about Bolasie?

Our own contract nonce is one of the most highly regarded contract nonces in world football. Long live the contract nonce aka David Harrison.

I think he looks better with the glasses on though.

Good business and albeit minimal research, I think this is a very good deal, and we move on.

JP, welcome to the EFC, family.👍🍀⚽️🙏🏼🍻

I've got a suspicion that this may turn out to be a purchase every bit as important as that of Kean, if not more so.

The beautiful moment when Brands adjusts Jean-Phillipe's suit at his first appearance is very telling. It is available on Brands' twitter and, I'm sure, elsewhere. It says a lot about Brands' sense of style and the importance of taking care to make the best of oneself.

It also shows, as others have remarked, how comfortable this player is in his skin and how instinctively respectful he is. He looks a proper sort.

Talking of taking care, it would have been polite to spell Jean-Philippe's name correctly. Apologies.

Just been watching his YouTube clip that always make players look like world beaters. Bloody hell if this is his highlights would not like to see his low lights. Hope I am wrong but looks bang average to poor.

Must have watched different clips to me Geoff@212, he looks pretty good from what I have seen so far. Albeit from YouTube clips.
