Season › 2019-20 › News Pennington joins Hull on loan Thursday, 8 August, 2019 9comments | Jump to most recent Matthew Pennington has signed for Hull City on loan for the season. Alan Myers of Sky Sports News tweeted yesterday that the 24-year-old was on his way to the Yorkshire club, his latest in a string of loan assignments in recent years. Pennington, a product of Everton's Finch Farm youth academy, had loan spells at neighbouring Tranmere Rovers, Coventry City and Walsall before returning to the Blues at a time when he looked primed to break into the first team. He was used at senior level by Roberto Martinez and scored a goal in a Merseyside derby but he wasn't able to hold down a regular place in the side. Temporary spells at Leeds United and Ipswich Town followed after he signed new terms that extended his contract to 2021 but, with a first-team berth still looking unlikely, he has returned to the Championship with Hull City for the 2019-20 season. Disclaimer Mike Gaynes 1 Posted 07/08/2019 at 17:32:35 His final departure, I think. Contracted to 2021 but will undoubtedly be sold to a Championship club next summer. So this is a Hull of an opportunity to show his wares to potential buyers. Jack Convery 2 Posted 07/08/2019 at 17:38:59 I hope he does well - Ipswich loved him. Steve Ferns 3 Posted 07/08/2019 at 18:03:52 He's a great player at that level. He could play higher. I hope it goes well for him. Unfortunately it looks like he'll never play for us again. Kevin Prytherch 4 Posted 07/08/2019 at 20:00:41 I think he's found his level. A very good championship defender and probably in the top 50-70 English centre backs at present, which is nothing to be sniffed at.Good luck to the lad, I hope he does as well as Duffy did when he finally left Bill Gienapp 5 Posted 07/08/2019 at 20:28:19 I tend to find the phrase "Championship level at best" to be wildly overused, but if it applies to anyone, it's Matthew Pennington. Nice kid though... and, as I've said many times before, he can always say that he bagged a goal in a Merseyside Derby. Richard Duff 6 Posted 07/08/2019 at 20:37:12 How many of us want to score at Anfield? He's done that. Si Smith 8 Posted 08/08/2019 at 00:18:29 Why can't we just sell the lad instead of all these loan deals!!!٠m; first come, first served! David Ellis 9 Posted 08/08/2019 at 08:21:48 Yes- we should sell him Peter Warren 10 Posted 08/08/2019 at 18:18:07 Seems a mistake to let him go. He would be on comparative buttons and we have 3 senior central defenders, one with very dodgy appearance record. Huge risk for little reward.
